Choose tools for the repairs and projects you expect to handle, and get qualified help for work beyond your skills.
What tools should a new homeowner buy first?
Harbor Freight’s Must-Have Tools for New Homeowners guide describes common needs such as assembling furniture, hanging photos, tightening hardware, and measuring rooms or furniture. These six picks cover many of those straightforward jobs without suggesting that a basic kit is enough for every repair.
1. Hammer
A general-purpose hammer is useful for driving and removing nails and for basic household assembly. Keep the work modest and use the right fastener for the material and job; a hammer is not a substitute for understanding how a wall or fixture is built.
2. Screwdriver and hex-key set
A set with several screwdriver types and sizes helps with furniture assembly, door-handle hardware, and other screws around the home. Hex keys—also called Allen keys—fit the recessed fasteners common in flat-pack furniture and some household fixtures. Using the correct size helps avoid damaging the fastener.

3. Tape measure and level
A tape measure helps check whether furniture will fit, plan a room layout, and mark spacing. A level helps check that a shelf, frame, or other item is straight. They work well as a pair: measure placement, then check alignment. Neither tool identifies what is behind a wall.
4. Pliers
Pliers grip and turn small parts, hold materials, and help with basic adjustments. A kit may include more than one type; use a tool that fits the part rather than forcing a poor fit, which can damage hardware or cause a slip.

5. Adjustable wrench
An adjustable wrench can turn nuts and bolts of different sizes, making it a flexible hand tool for basic tightening and assembly. Set the jaw snugly against the fastener before applying force. It is not a license to take on complex plumbing or other work that requires specialized knowledge.
6. Utility knife
A utility knife is useful for opening boxes and cutting suitable packaging or materials during a small project. Retract or cover the blade when it is not in use, cut away from your body, and follow the tool’s instructions for blade changes and disposal.

Which useful tools are outside the six?
The six-tool limit leaves out two items Harbor Freight’s guide also recommends: a stud finder and a cordless drill/driver. They can be worthwhile additions, depending on the work you plan to do. A stud finder can help locate framing before hanging certain items, while a drill/driver can speed up tasks involving compatible fasteners. A stud finder alone does not establish that drilling is safe: it does not make every wall location safe to penetrate or identify all hazards. Check the wall and task-specific guidance before drilling.
The retailer also names other homeowner needs, including curtain hanging, drywall patching, drain unclogging, lawn care, landscaping, and cleanup. Those jobs call for different supplies and may require more than this starter set. Do not treat a list of basic tools as instruction or qualification for electrical, structural, gas, or complex plumbing work; hire a qualified professional when the job is outside your competence.

Should you buy individual tools or a Harbor Freight kit?
A preassembled kit can provide several basics at once; buying individually lets you choose each tool for your intended jobs. Compare what is actually in the case, whether the tools you will use are included, and how you will store and carry the set. Both listings describe household use, but neither listing establishes independent comparative durability. A piece count alone does not tell you whether the kit has the specific tool you need: check the contents before buying. Neither kit covers every item recommended in the guide.

What does Harbor Freight’s hand-tool warranty cover?
Harbor Freight’s warranty information says: “Harbor Freight Tools will replace any hand tool that fails to properly work during the lifetime of the original purchaser.” The policy is subject to limitations; it says the defective tool must be surrendered at a local store for replacement, the lifetime warranty does not cover loss or theft, and Harbor Freight may provide a substantially similar item if an identical replacement is unavailable. Do not extend this hand-tool coverage to a power tool or every product: other products may have a limited 90-day warranty and stated exclusions. Check the applicable policy for the product you are considering.
