To help a cut-flower bouquet stay fresh, start with a clean vase, remove leaves that would sit underwater, make a fresh stem cut, and use commercial flower food as directed. Keep the water fresh and the arrangement in a cool spot away from heat and ripening fruit. These simple habits support longer vase life, but no single number of extra days applies to every bouquet.
1. Start with a clean vase
Wash a used vase with hot, soapy water and rinse it well before arranging flowers. Residue and microbes can build up in a vase and contribute to problems with water uptake. A clean vessel gives the stems a better start. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions and Iowa State University Extension both recommend clean containers.

2. Remove leaves that would sit underwater
Strip off foliage below the vase’s waterline, but leave healthy leaves above it. Submerged leaves break down and can make the water cloudy or contaminated. Check the waterline after arranging, since leaves may slip below it as stems settle. University of Illinois Extension explains this basic bouquet-care step.
3. Make a fresh cut and put stems in water promptly
With a clean, sharp knife or clippers, trim about 1/2 to 1 inch from each stem, then place the flowers in water. A fresh cut exposes stem tissue that can take up water; a sharp tool is less likely to crush the stem. Iowa State notes that scissors may crush stems more readily than a sharp knife or clippers.

Cutting underwater is not a requirement for every household bouquet. Iowa State describes it as ideal in some circumstances, while noting that it can be difficult after flowers have been arranged. A fresh, clean cut followed by prompt hydration is a practical routine.
4. Use commercial flower food as directed
If the bouquet came with a packet of floral preservative, mix it according to the packet’s dilution instructions. Commercial flower food is formulated to provide carbohydrates and help control microbes in the water. Iowa State University Extension advises using commercial preservative or plain clean water rather than relying on household recipes: sugar, aspirin, tea, pennies, bleach, soda, mouthwash, and similar additions are not as effective, and some may shorten vase life.

5. Check the water and refresh it when needed
Check the vase daily and top it up as needed so the cut stem ends remain submerged. If the water becomes cloudy or smells unpleasant, replace it rather than simply adding more. Wash the vase, refill it with fresh water, and add preservative at the instructed concentration if you are using it. Iowa State University Extension and UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions recommend keeping the arrangement’s water clean.

6. Choose a cool spot away from fruit
Place the bouquet away from direct sunlight, heaters, other heat sources, and drafts. Keep it away from ripening fruit as well: fruit releases ethylene, a gas that can speed flower aging. A cooler, stable location helps avoid these sources of stress, though the best placement can vary with the flowers and the conditions in your home. Daffodils release a gelatinous sap that can harm other cut flowers sharing the same holding solution. If you are combining them with other blooms, condition freshly cut or recut daffodils separately before adding them to the arrangement. The recommended conditioning duration varies, so there is no single time to apply to every bouquet. UC Davis Postharvest Research and Extension Center discusses this daffodil-specific issue.
