6 Best Apple Tree Varieties to Grow in Pots

Discovery, Egremont Russet, Sunset, Greensleeves, Falstaff and Lane’s Prince Albert offer different harvests and uses—but a suitable rootstock is essential for growing apples in pots.

For a compact garden, six apple varieties worth considering are Discovery, Egremont Russet, Sunset, Greensleeves, Falstaff and Lane’s Prince Albert. They are not all naturally dwarf or guaranteed to thrive in containers: the tree’s rootstock and trained form matter as much as its cultivar. Of these six, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) specifically identifies Egremont Russet as suitable for a pot; the others are candidates to investigate with a nursery, not proven container performers.

How to choose an apple tree for a pot

Start with the grafted tree’s rootstock and form, then choose a cultivar for its flavor, harvest window and intended use. The RHS explains that “The rootstock will help control the cultivar’s vigour and make it more suitable to grow in a container.” Its container guidance recommends M9 or M26 for apples. Ask the nursery to confirm the rootstock and whether the tree is trained for container growing; the cultivar name alone does not tell you its eventual size. RHS container-growing advice

RHS guidance cautions against treating M27 as a default: restricting a tree further in a pot can make this very dwarfing rootstock excessively limiting. The RHS’s apple-growing guide also notes that rootstock affects vigor. Availability and disease suitability vary by region, so confirm local recommendations before buying.

Six apple varieties to consider for containers

This is a choice-based shortlist, not a tested ranking of potted-tree yields. The RHS cultivar information describes garden varieties; it does not establish that these six outperform other apples in pots.

#1 Best Overall
American Plant Exchange Apple Tree 'Semi Dwarf Fuji' – Live Fruit-Bearing Plant, 5-Gallon Pot, Cold-Hardy, Sweet Crisp Red Harvest for Orchards, Backyard Gardens & Edible Landscapes
  • Extra-Sweet & Crisp Apples – Produces large, red-blushed apples with an exceptionally juicy texture and honeyed sweetness, perfect for fresh eating, baking, and cider-making
  • Thrives in Home Orchards – Grows best in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9, requiring full sun and well-draining soil for optimal fruit production and tree health
  • Cold-Hardy & Disease-Resistant – Well-suited for various climates, this hardy tree withstands cold winters and resists common apple diseases, making it a reliable choice for home growers
  • Pollinator-Friendly & Beautiful Blooms – Blooms in mid-spring with fragrant pinkish-white flowers that attract bees and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity in your orchard
  • Late-Season Harvest & Superior Storage Life – Ripens in mid to late fall, producing apples that maintain their crisp texture and sweet flavor for months in storage
Variety What it offers RHS harvest season and pollination group Container note
Discovery Early dessert apple; useful when other apples are not yet ready. It cannot be stored. August–September; group 3 Consider it for an early harvest, but check that the grafted tree has a compact, suitable rootstock.
Egremont Russet Dessert apple with crisp, creamy-yellow flesh and a subtle nutty flavor. Late September or October; group 2 The RHS explicitly lists it as suitable for growing in a pot. It is partially self-fertile, though a pollination partner is recommended for a reliable heavy crop.
Sunset Dessert apple described by the RHS as reliable and heavy-cropping. October–December; group 3 The reliability description is garden-guide information, not a container-yield guarantee.
Greensleeves Easy-to-grow, reliable dessert apple of the Golden Delicious type. September–November; group 3 A candidate for a familiar dessert type; verify rootstock and local suitability.
Falstaff Easy-to-grow, reliable dessert apple for mid-winter, according to the RHS. October–January; group 3 Check nursery naming carefully: Falstaff and Red Falstaff should not be assumed to mean the same listing.
Lane’s Prince Albert Culinary apple; the RHS describes it as a small tree ideal for garden use. November–March; group 3 A cooking-apple option with a small-tree habit, but the RHS does not specifically guarantee it for pots.

Harvest seasons and pollination groups above are from the RHS cultivar guide. They describe the listed cultivars, not a promise that fruit will ripen on the same dates in every climate. The RHS names more than 700 apple cultivars in its guide and nursery-catalogue scope, so this shortlist is not exhaustive.

Pollination: check for a compatible flowering partner

Most apple trees need pollen from another compatible cultivar flowering at the same time to set fruit well. A pollination group helps indicate flowering time, but check actual bloom overlap and local compatibility with a nursery or reliable regional source. A compatible apple growing nearby may provide pollen; if you have room for only one tree, a self-fertile or partially self-fertile choice can help. Egremont Russet is partially self-fertile, but the RHS still recommends a partner for a more reliable heavy crop. RHS apple pollination guidance RHS Egremont Russet listing

Pot size, compost and ongoing care

  1. Choose a substantial container with drainage. The RHS recommends a pot 45–50 cm (18–20 in) in diameter for most fruit. Its Egremont Russet listing specifies a large pot at least 50 cm (20 in) in diameter. Use a container with adequate drainage holes. RHS container advice RHS Egremont Russet listing
  2. Use a suitable growing medium. The RHS suggests good-quality compost such as John Innes No. 3, or multipurpose compost mixed with one-third grit or perlite for drainage. For Egremont Russet, the RHS plant listing recommends loam-based John Innes compost.
  3. Give the tree full sun and manage watering. Water generously, allowing the surface of the compost to dry between waterings; do not let the root ball become bone dry.
  4. Feed during the growing season. Use controlled-release fertilizer or a high-potassium liquid feed according to its label directions.
  5. Refresh the root space as the tree grows. After leaf fall, repot every year or every other year while the tree establishes. Once it is in its final container, periodically refresh the compost or root-prune; the RHS advises refreshing surface compost in intervening years.

Check regional fit before you buy

The RHS recommendations are UK-oriented. Climate, disease pressure and rootstock availability differ elsewhere, so ask a local nursery or extension service whether the cultivar and rootstock suit your conditions. For example, Iowa State’s regional guidance flags fire blight susceptibility for M26 in Iowa; that is a location-specific caution, not a universal verdict on M26.
