Good Housekeeping’s independent testing identifies the LG front-loader as the strongest all-around choice, the Whirlpool FreshFlow front-loader as the best value, the Speed Queen TR7 as the best traditional top-loader, Samsung’s Bespoke AI combo as the best all-in-one, Miele’s smart front-loader as the best compact option, and the GE Profile impeller washer as the best choice for bulky loads.
Those are category winners rather than six versions of one universal “best” machine. A family running several loads a day may value the LG’s short cycles, while an apartment resident may care more about the Samsung’s ability to wash and dry in one appliance. Before buying, match the exact model number to the product page, installation guide, warranty, and retailer listing. Several of the editorial recommendations are product families rather than fully identified tested SKUs.

Quick comparison: the six best washing machines
| Pick | Best for | Format and reported capacity | Why it stands out | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LG Front Load HE Stackable Smart Washer | Most households, large loads, and shorter cycles | Front-load; 5.0 cu. ft. | Strong soil removal, fast testing cycles, generous drum, intuitive controls | Less gentle on clothing than some competitors; requires front-loader odor prevention |
| Whirlpool Smart Front Load Washer with FreshFlow | Value-conscious buyers | Front-load; 4.5 cu. ft. in the tested category | Excellent stain removal, automatic soil-based adjustments, freshness features | Most tested cycles took more than an hour |
| Speed Queen TR7 Heavy Duty Top Load Washer | People who prefer a traditional top-loader | Top-load; verify the current SKU specifications | Recommended by Good Housekeeping as its best top-loader | Accessible testing material does not establish current capacity, warranty, or cycle-time claims |
| Samsung Bespoke AI All-in-One Vented Combo | Apartments and homes without room for separate appliances | washer-dryer combo; 4.8 cu. ft. reported by Good Housekeeping | Washes and dries in one appliance, with strong cleaning and comparatively fast drying in testing | Large or heavy loads can take longer; confirm whether the current configuration requires external venting |
| Miele Smart Front Load Washer | Compact laundry rooms and apartments | Front-load; 2.26 cu. ft. reported by Good Housekeeping | Space-saving dimensions, two-stage detergent dispensing, specialty-care cycles | Small capacity means more loads; verify the exact model and installation requirements |
| GE Profile Top-Load Washer | Bulky items and shoppers who want an impeller top-loader | Impeller top-load; 5.4 cu. ft. | Strong cleaning, quick tested cycles, good water extraction, large usable tub | Deep tub may be difficult for shorter users, and fabric gentleness was not its strongest result |
How these rankings were established: The product-specific findings below come from Good Housekeeping’s Cleaning Lab evaluation, not from first-hand testing by Bettesworth Construction editors. Good Housekeeping says it evaluates soil removal, cycle duration, water removal, gentleness, ease of use, capacity, energy efficiency, and water use. Consumer Reports independently describes testing washers for cleaning, water efficiency, energy efficiency, noise, vibration, and gentleness, which provides useful corroboration for the testing approach but not model-specific scores here.

1. Best overall: LG Front Load HE Stackable Smart Washer
The LG front-loader is the best all-around choice for a busy household that wants a large drum without accepting traditionally long front-load cycles. Good Housekeeping selected it as its best overall washer after finding strong soil removal, very fast cycles, a generous capacity, and an interface that was straightforward to use.
#1 Best Overall
- Tough Action for Tough Stains: Our top load clothes washer features a Triple Action Impeller to tackle your toughest loads in three powerful ways: Spraying Action to attack dirt from every angle with a concentrated detergent mix, Wash Basket Action to move the wash basket back and forth, and Impeller Action to move clothes in a circular pattern
- More Laundry, Less Time: Our high-efficiency top load washer features Express Wash to clean small loads in just 30 minutes (based on a 3-lb load, default cycle setting), and Accela Wash to clean full-size loads up to 51% faster (compared to a standard 8-lb load, normal cycle, warm wash temp, extra heavy soil setting) - so you spend less time doing laundry
- Wash Your Way: Features 10 wash cycles to custom wash your loads including Heavy Duty, Whites, Towels, Delicates, and Express Cycles. Select from 4 temperature options and rinse with Extra Rinse to help protect sensitive skin. Soft Close lid has tempered glass and won’t slam shut
- Easy to Operate: Use the intuitive light-touch controls to select the load and cycle options that match the fabric types in each load. Plus, the convenient LED lights provide time remaining and cycle status information
- Reduce and Save: Energy savings includes Cold Clean which cleans gently & completely while using up to 90% less energy (when compared to the normal cycle, default settings, 8-lb load)
In the cited evaluation, the machine completed its Quick cycle in about 16 minutes. Normal full-load cycles took just over 30 minutes, unusually quick results for a full-size front-loader. Those timings are test results rather than a promise that every load in every home will finish in the same time; soil level, options, water temperature, load balance, and garment type can all change the duration.
Why it is a strong default
- Large capacity: Good Housekeeping reports a 5.0-cubic-foot drum, useful for family laundry and bulky items.
- Fast operation: The tested Quick and normal-cycle results favor households that run multiple loads.
- Easy controls: The interface was considered intuitive in testing.
- Stacking potential: As a front-loader, it may be suitable for a stacked laundry center when paired with the compatible dryer and approved stacking kit. Compatibility must be checked by model number.
A current LG 5.0-cubic-foot front-load model, WM6500HBA, is a plausible retail reference for this category. LG lists TurboWash 360, built-in intelligence, steam Allergiene, ThinQ connectivity, and ENERGY STAR certification for that model. Do not assume WM6500HBA is the exact unit Good Housekeeping tested. Match the retailer listing, serial-family information, and current specification sheet before treating those features as part of the reviewed machine.
Tradeoff: Good Housekeeping found the LG less gentle on fabrics than some competing machines. If you frequently wash delicate garments, silk-like fabrics, or clothing with loose construction, use the machine’s gentler settings and compare fabric-care performance rather than choosing solely on speed.

2. Best value: Whirlpool Smart Front Load Washer with FreshFlow
The Whirlpool FreshFlow front-loader is the value pick for buyers who want strong cleaning and odor-management features without moving to a premium-priced machine. Good Housekeeping reported exceptional stain removal, a relatively affordable purchase price, automatic cycle adjustment based on soil level, and a 4.5-cubic-foot drum.
The machine’s freshness features are aimed at a common front-loader complaint: moisture remaining in the gasket, dispenser, or drum after a wash. Good Housekeeping identifies an antimicrobial-treated door gasket and a Dry Drum cycle as features intended to help control odor. Whirlpool’s lineup also includes FreshFlow ventilation, and the WFW5720RW lists FanFresh. The WFW6720RR is a 5.0-cubic-foot model that lists a Dry Drum cycle. These are current lineup references, not confirmation that each feature appears on the exact machine used in the editorial test.
What to expect in daily use
- Good stain performance: It is the strongest reason to choose this model family at the value end.
- Automatic adjustment: The washer can adjust its cycle based on the detected soil level, potentially avoiding unnecessary intensity on lighter loads.
- Freshness assistance: Ventilation and drum-drying features can help, but they do not replace wiping the gasket, removing wet laundry promptly, and leaving the door open when the manual permits.
- Slower cycles: Most cycles took more than an hour in the cited Good Housekeeping evaluation.
Whirlpool’s current 4.5-cubic-foot lineup includes the WFW4720RW and WFW5720RW. Because the editorial label does not expose a complete tested SKU, do not assume that a current Whirlpool listing has the exact tested control panel, cycle set, capacity, or freshness feature.
The lower purchase price also does not automatically make this the cheaper machine to own. Installation, delivery, haul-away, detergent, water and electricity rates, and the number of loads you run each week can matter more than a modest difference in sticker price. If you value stain removal and freshness features but can tolerate longer cycles, compare the Whirlpool FreshFlow model by exact model number rather than by family name alone.
3. Best traditional top-loader: Speed Queen TR7 Heavy Duty Top Load Washer
The Speed Queen TR7 is Good Housekeeping’s best traditional top-loader. It is the appropriate pick for shoppers who prefer loading from above, do not want to bend to reach a front drum, or simply prefer the familiar operation of a top-loading washer.
The accessible testing material does not provide enough verified technical detail to responsibly add a current TR7 capacity, warranty length, cycle time, or durability claim. Those specifications can vary by precise model and market. Treat the TR7 recommendation as a category and operating-format recommendation, then check the current manufacturer documentation before purchase.
Why choose a top-loader?
Good Housekeeping’s broader buying guidance says top-loaders are generally less prone to mold and odor because water drains downward after the cycle. They are also easier to load from a standing position. Those benefits are especially relevant in a laundry room where a front door would be awkward to access or where users prefer not to crouch.
The tradeoff is efficiency. Front-loaders generally use less water and energy and tend to perform slightly better in testing. A traditional agitator top-loader can also be rougher on fabric and provide less usable capacity than an impeller design because the center agitator occupies part of the tub. The TR7 should therefore be chosen because its format suits your household, not because every top-loader is automatically more efficient or gentler.
Retailer check: Before purchase, check the current price and confirm the exact TR7 model, electrical requirements, warranty language, service coverage, and delivery path. Avoid importing capacity or durability claims from an older or different TR7 listing.
4. Best all-in-one: Samsung Bespoke AI All-in-One Vented Combo
The Samsung Bespoke AI All-in-One combo is the best choice when the main problem is not washing performance but the need to eliminate a separate dryer or the transfer of wet clothing between machines. Good Housekeeping named it the best overall combo after reporting excellent cleaning, faster drying than the other combos it tested, and a no-touch lint filter.

Good Housekeeping’s captured specification block reports 4.8 cubic feet of capacity, a reported annual energy cost of $19, and a warranty structure of one year for full parts and labor, five years for the heat-pump system, and ten years for the motor. These are source-reported figures, not guaranteed operating costs or universal current warranty terms. Confirm the warranty for the exact U.S. SKU and region before ordering.
Resolve the venting question before installation
The product title in the accessible Good Housekeeping material calls the appliance vented, while its displayed specification says that it does not require venting. That is a material installation conflict. Do not decide whether the unit can go in a closet, interior room, or existing washer location from the title alone. Check Samsung’s current installation manual for the exact model and confirm whether the configuration requires an external exhaust connection, special airflow clearance, drain arrangement, or electrical circuit.
Combos are convenient, but they change the household workflow. A single appliance can wash and dry without a transfer, yet the total wash-dry program may take longer for a full load, towels, bedding, or other heavy fabrics. Actual times depend on load size, fabric weight, selected settings, and how dry the clothing must be. Manufacturer claims about very short wash-dry programs should not be treated as universal results.
This is the right category for an apartment, a compact utility room, or a remodel where adding a second appliance is impractical. It is less suitable for a large family that needs to wash one load while drying another. If you choose this route, compare the washer-dryer combo listing only after confirming the venting configuration, electrical requirements, clearances, service access, and current warranty.
5. Best compact: Miele Smart Front Load Washer
The Miele Smart front-loader is the compact pick for apartments, smaller laundry rooms, and installations where a full-size washer will not fit. Good Housekeeping describes a space-saving design, a two-stage detergent-dispensing system intended to optimize stain removal, and a wide selection of specialty-care cycles.
The captured specification block reports a capacity of 2.26 cubic feet and dimensions of approximately 23.5 inches wide by 33.5 inches high by 25.3 inches deep. It also reports up to a two-year warranty and an estimated annual energy cost of $14. The exact Miele model number was not exposed in the accessible roundup, so verify every measurement, warranty term, control feature, and electrical requirement against the current product page and installation guide.
Capacity is the decision, not just the footprint
A compact washer can solve a construction or remodeling constraint while creating a usage constraint. A 2.26-cubic-foot drum may be perfectly practical for one or two people, but a family may need more frequent cycles for towels, bedding, uniforms, or work clothes. Measure not only the cabinet opening but also door clearance, hose space, drain location, and the path through which the appliance will be carried.
Check whether the exact Miele washer can be stacked with the intended dryer and which approved kit is required. A machine that fits the opening may still fail the installation plan if the door cannot open fully, the controls are inaccessible when stacked, or the floor cannot support the arrangement.

The GE Profile top-loader is the best option in this group for shoppers who want top-loading access and a large, unobstructed tub for bulky items. Unlike an agitator machine, an impeller washer does not use a tall center post, leaving more room for duvets, sleeping bags, and other large items.
Good Housekeeping reports a 5.4-cubic-foot capacity, strong stain removal, fast cycles, good water extraction, and controls that were easy to use. In the cited tests, 8- and 12-pound normal loads finished in about 42 minutes, while a 3-pound Fast load finished in about 25 minutes.
GE’s 2026 product-selection material identifies a Profile 5.4-cubic-foot washer with Smarter Wash. A separate 2026 GE guide lists a Profile 5.4-cubic-foot impeller washer with Power + Care, Smart Wash/Rinse, Tangle Control, Wi-Fi, and ENERGY STAR. Do not assume that every feature belongs to the precise model tested by Good Housekeeping. Match the model number to the retailer listing before using it for a purchase decision.
What to watch for
The tested machine was not among the gentlest for fabrics. A large impeller tub can also be physically deep, making it hard for shorter users to reach the bottom. Stand beside a comparable machine if possible, or check the tub depth and your reach before ordering. For bulky loads, however, its combination of top access, high capacity, and no center agitator is compelling.
If that combination fits your laundry habits, find the GE Profile impeller washer by its precise model number and verify the included hoses, delivery method, installation service, and return policy.
Front-load versus top-load: which format is better?
| Consideration | Front-load | Top-load |
|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | Generally uses less water and energy and is usually the more efficient format | Generally uses more water than a front-loader, though exact performance depends on the model and certification |
| Cleaning and handling | Often performs slightly better in independent testing and can handle bulky items | Agitator models may be rougher on fabrics; impeller models preserve more open tub space |
| Loading position | Requires bending or raising the machine on a pedestal | Loads from above and may be easier for people who prefer an upright position |
| Odor risk | Needs proactive gasket, dispenser, drum, and door care because moisture can remain inside | Generally less prone to mold and odor because water drains downward |
| Space planning | Many models can stack with a compatible dryer and approved kit | Usually cannot be stacked in the same way; the lid also needs vertical clearance |
There is no format that wins every category. Choose front-load when water and energy use, stacking, cleaning performance, or bulky-item handling are priorities. Choose top-load when upright access, simpler loading, or a preference for traditional operation matters more. Within top-loaders, choose an agitator for a more traditional wash action or an impeller when usable tub space is more important.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret ENERGY STAR and operating-cost claims
ENERGY STAR certification is useful, but it is a certification claim rather than a guarantee that every household will pay the same amount to operate a washer. Current ENERGY STAR criteria distinguish among front-load, top-load, compact, commercial, and all-in-one products and use measures including integrated modified energy factor and integrated water factor.
Your actual cost depends on local electricity, gas, and water rates; wash temperature; cycle selection; hot-water usage; load size; and how frequently the machine runs. The $19 Samsung and $14 Miele estimates reported in the testing material should therefore be treated as comparison figures from the cited source, not as household-specific forecasts.

If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
Washer installation checklist
A washer is a construction and plumbing decision as much as an appliance decision. Before delivery, work through this checklist:
- Measure the opening: Record width, height, depth, baseboard interference, and any trim that will restrict the appliance.
- Measure the operating clearance: Confirm that a front door or top lid can open fully and that users can reach controls, dispensers, and the tub.
- Plan the delivery path: Measure doorways, stairways, turns, elevators, and the final route into the laundry room.
- Verify stacking: A front-loader is not automatically stackable. Confirm that the dryer, washer, and approved stacking kit are compatible.
- Check electrical requirements: Use the exact installation manual. Voltage, amperage, outlet location, and circuit requirements vary by appliance.
- Check water hookups: Confirm hot and cold supply locations, hose length, shutoff access, and whether the manufacturer requires specific connections.
- Plan drainage: Verify drain height, standpipe or utility-sink arrangement, hose routing, and access for service.
- Level the floor: Washers need a stable, reasonably level surface. Poor leveling can cause vibration, noise, walking, or premature wear.
- Resolve venting: This is especially important for the Samsung combo. Confirm whether the exact configuration requires an exterior vent or uses another drying arrangement.
- Budget the complete installation: Include delivery, connection, haul-away, new hoses, drain pans where appropriate, leveling, pedestals, stacking kits, and any required electrical or plumbing work.
Before placing an order, check appliance availability and compare the retailer’s delivery, connection, haul-away, and damage-inspection policies. For a remodel or new laundry room, compare washer installation quotes rather than assuming standard delivery includes all required work.
Maintenance that prevents common washer problems
For front-loaders
- Remove laundry promptly after the cycle.
- Wipe moisture and residue from the door gasket, especially the lower fold.
- Leave the door ajar between cycles when the manufacturer permits it.
- Remove detergent buildup from the dispenser and keep the dispenser area dry.
- Run the manufacturer-recommended drum-cleaning cycle at the stated interval.
- Inspect and clean the drain filter according to the manual.
Moisture can collect in the gasket, dispenser, and drum. Freshness features help, but they cannot compensate for leaving wet clothes in the machine or routinely closing a damp door.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For top-loaders and combos
- Do not overload the tub, even when the capacity appears generous.
- Follow the detergent and load-balancing instructions for impeller machines.
- Clean the lint filter or lint-management system as directed, particularly on an all-in-one combo.
- Keep the appliance level and investigate new vibration instead of ignoring it.
- Use only cleaners and accessories approved for the machine.
Useful installation and maintenance supplies may include washer-cleaning tablets, anti-vibration pads, a washing machine drain pan, a front-load washer pedestal, a compatible washer stacking kit, and replacement washer hoses. These are not universally interchangeable. Match dimensions, connection type, weight rating, and manufacturer approval before buying.
How to choose among the six
- Choose the LG if you want the strongest general-purpose balance of capacity, cleaning, intuitive controls, and short cycles.
- Choose the Whirlpool if purchase value, stain removal, and freshness-oriented features matter more than cycle speed.
- Choose the Speed Queen TR7 if you specifically want a traditional top-loader and prefer above-the-tub loading.
- Choose the Samsung combo if eliminating a separate dryer or wet-load transfer is more important than maximum laundry throughput.
- Choose the Miele if the installation space requires a compact machine and you can live with more frequent loads.
- Choose the GE Profile if you wash duvets, sleeping bags, or other bulky items and want a large impeller tub without a center agitator.
Important model-number and price warning
Retail prices, promotions, stock, delivery dates, installation fees, warranty terms, and regional service availability change frequently. Manufacturer pages also distinguish among models that look nearly identical in retailer listings. The model number is therefore more important than the product-family name.
For the LG, WM6500HBA is a current retail reference but is not confirmed as the exact Good Housekeeping test unit. Whirlpool’s WFW4720RW and WFW5720RW are current lineup examples, while the WFW6720RR is a 5.0-cubic-foot model associated with a Dry Drum feature. The accessible research does not expose the complete tested SKUs for the Speed Queen, Samsung, Miele, or GE recommendations. Verify all specifications at the point of purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are front-load washing machines better than top-loaders?
Neither format is best for every home. Front-loaders generally use less water and energy, tend to perform slightly better in testing, and can often be stacked. Top-loaders are easier to load from above and are generally less prone to mold and odor, but they usually use more water. Choose based on efficiency, access, space, and fabric-care priorities.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do I prevent a front-load washer from smelling?
Remove wet clothes promptly, wipe the door gasket, clean the detergent dispenser, run the manufacturer-recommended drum-cleaning cycle, and leave the door ajar between cycles when the manual permits it. Freshness or ventilation features can help, but they do not replace regular care.
Is a washer-dryer combo a good choice for an apartment?
It can be a strong choice when space is limited or transferring wet clothes is inconvenient. The tradeoff is throughput: wash-dry programs can take longer for full or heavy loads, and installation requirements must be checked carefully. Confirm the exact Samsung configuration’s venting, electrical, drainage, and clearance requirements before buying.
What should I verify before buying a washing machine?
Verify the exact model number, width, depth, height, door or lid clearance, stacking compatibility, electrical requirements, water hookups, drain arrangement, floor levelness, warranty, service availability, delivery, installation, haul-away, and current ENERGY STAR status. Also check local rebate eligibility separately because programs vary by location.
The Bottom Line
There is no single best washer for every household. The LG is the strongest all-around choice when speed and front-load performance lead the decision. The Whirlpool is the value pick when stain removal and freshness features matter. Choose the Speed Queen TR7 for traditional top-loading operation, the Samsung combo when one appliance must wash and dry, the Miele when space is tight, and the GE Profile when bulky loads call for a large impeller tub. Before purchase, verify the exact SKU and installation plan; that is where capacity, venting, warranty, certification, and real ownership cost are decided.
