The right way to get rid of furniture depends on its condition, whether someone can reuse it, how quickly it must go, and what local services accept. Start by offering usable pieces for sale, sharing or donation; use an authorized bulky-item service or removal provider when reuse is not practical. Collection rules, fees and pickup availability vary by location, so confirm them before moving an item or leaving it outside.
Choose a route based on the furniture and your constraints
Before arranging a sale, donation or pickup, check the item’s condition, dimensions and access requirements. Then consider how soon it needs to leave, whether you can transport it, and whether your local service has acceptance rules or fees. The City of Kirkland says, “Reuse is the best environmental choice for furniture that is not broken.” Kirkland’s furniture-disposal guidance also cautions residents not to leave furniture on roadsides or other public places.
1. Sell usable furniture locally
If a piece is in usable condition and you can wait for a buyer, list it on a local marketplace or buy-and-sell site. Hillsborough County names Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Craigslist, Nextdoor curb alerts and Buy Nothing groups; the City of Hamilton names eBay, Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace. These are examples of channels, not guarantees of a sale or a particular price.
Make the listing useful and accurate: include dimensions, condition, visible wear and whether the buyer must collect it. Agree on a pickup plan before committing, especially for a large or heavy piece.

2. Give it away nearby
For furniture that is still useful but not worth selling, ask friends, relatives or neighbors, or post in a local sharing group. The City of Portland recommends neighborhood Buy Nothing groups and other online local channels. Kirkland also recommends sharing sites, while warning against leaving furniture in public places.
Arrange a direct handoff or confirmed collection rather than assuming that placing an item at the curb makes it available. Follow local rules and make sure the person taking it knows the item’s condition and dimensions.

3. Donate to a reuse store or nonprofit
Habitat for Humanity ReStores generally accept gently used or like-new furniture, and some locations offer free pickup for large items. Acceptance lists and pickup arrangements differ by store, so check the specific location’s condition requirements, exclusions, service area and schedule before preparing an item.
For upholstered or leather furniture, Habitat’s pickup guidance says items must be free of tears, stains and pet damage. Confirm that the local organization accepts your particular piece and that its crew can safely remove it. A local East Bay/Silicon Valley example requires donations to be intact and in excellent working condition; it does not accept mattresses and box springs as donations, though select locations recycle them. Those are local rules, not a policy for every ReStore.

4. Use a municipal bulky-item service or authorized facility
If the furniture cannot be reused, check your municipality’s solid-waste authority for bulky-item pickup, transfer stations or other authorized disposal facilities. Ask whether you must schedule collection, pay a fee, prepare the item in a particular way or transport it yourself. Do not put furniture at the curb until the local service’s instructions say to do so.
Rules can be specific to a municipality and service. Hillsborough County requires residents to request bulky pickup before placing furniture at the curb. Hamilton says its two-person crew handles furniture only when it can lift the item and lists a limit of up to 200 lb (90 kg). These are local service requirements, not general limits. Residents in apartments or other multi-family buildings may need to contact their property manager or use a different service.

Also check where collected furniture goes. Kirkland says its fee-based bulky pickup sends furniture to landfill, so a municipal collection service should not be assumed to recycle or reuse the item.

A local junk-removal provider may suit furniture that cannot be donated or reused, or a situation where you cannot move the item yourself. When requesting quotes, the City of Portland advises asking whether the hauler sorts items for donation and recycling.
