Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGrowing an azalea in a pot lets you choose a suitable acidic mix and move the plant to a better spot as conditions change. Success comes down to drainage, the right light for its setting, and keeping the roots moist without leaving them waterlogged.
1. Choose a pot that drains and fits the root ball
Use a container with open drainage holes so excess water can escape. Pick a size that gives the roots room without surrounding them with a large volume of persistently wet mix: an oversized pot can hold more moisture than the plant uses, while a cramped one restricts growth. The container itself may be clay or another material; drainage and a suitable fit matter more than the material. Ask Extension’s guidance on azaleas in large clay pots advises against adding stones or pottery shards to the bottom as a drainage fix. If you use a decorative cover, empty any water collected in it after watering.
2. Use an acidic, free-draining potting mix
Azaleas prefer acidic growing conditions. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension gives a preferred soil pH range of 4.5–6.0 in its guide to selecting and growing azaleas. For a container, choose a quality mix suited to acid-loving plants; a blend incorporating shredded pine bark is another supported option. Avoid assuming ordinary garden soil or a generic potting mix will meet the plant’s needs. The Azalea Society of America’s growing guidance also discusses pH 4.5–6.0 in relation to iron availability.
3. Match the light to the kind of azalea
For an outdoor shrub in a pot, aim for filtered light rather than harsh, prolonged exposure. A spot with some shelter from intense sun can help keep the plant and its container from drying too quickly. Clemson Cooperative Extension’s azalea planting guidance discusses suitable light for azaleas.

A flowering florist azalea kept indoors has different needs: place it in bright light, but out of direct sun, as Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends. Do not assume advice for a potted outdoor shrub applies unchanged to an indoor gift plant.
4. Keep the potting mix evenly moist, not soggy
There is no reliable universal watering schedule for a potted azalea. How quickly the mix dries depends on factors such as pot size, weather, light exposure, and whether the plant is indoors or outside. Check the mix regularly and water thoroughly as it approaches dry; do not let it dry out completely, and let excess water drain away.

For an indoor flowering azalea, Iowa State advises watering when the surface feels dry to the touch and continuing until water runs from the bottom of the pot. Missouri Extension’s care guidance for flowering potted plants likewise cautions against letting a potted azalea dry out. The aim is steady moisture with free drainage, not standing water.

If a soil test is not available, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension points to an azalea- or camellia-specific fertilizer as an option. Follow the product label, and do not treat extra fertilizer as a cure for every problem. UGA’s azalea guide also covers pruning to remove tall, lanky growth or suckers, but pruning timing can depend on the type of azalea and local conditions; avoid applying one calendar rule to every cultivar.

Yellow leaves: check conditions before adding fertilizer
Yellowing leaves do not automatically mean the plant needs more food. UGA Extension’s Madison County article, “Azaleas: A Southern Staple” (April 2026), identifies high soil pH as a typical cause of leaf yellowing. Check the growing conditions and, if possible, have the soil or mix assessed before adding fertilizer or attempting to change pH.
