Then balance the water, clean the filter, inspect the cover, and follow the spa manufacturer’s instructions to prevent freeze damage. The right plan depends on your climate, expected use, and the specific model.
1. Choose whether to keep the tub running or shut it down
These are different preparation plans, not interchangeable checklists. Consider how often you expect to use the spa, whether freezing weather is likely, whether you can maintain reliable power and monitor the tub, and what your owner’s manual recommends. Jacuzzi’s manufacturer winter-preparation guide covers both operating a spa in winter and shutting it down.

| Consideration | Keep it running | Shut it down |
|---|---|---|
| Expected use | Choose this path if you plan to use the spa during cold weather. | Consider this if you do not expect to use it and want to close it for the season. |
| Cold-weather protection | Maintain water and circulation; use freeze-protection features only as directed for your model. | Drain the spa and clear water from the equipment and plumbing identified in the manual. |
| Owner’s role | Be prepared to maintain and monitor the spa in line with its instructions. | Be able to complete the model-specific draining and winterization steps, or seek help if needed. |
The available guidance does not establish a universal cost or risk advantage for either choice. Local conditions and the spa’s instructions should determine your plan.

2. Test the water and refresh it when due
Fall is a useful time to check water care, but it is not a universal deadline to drain and refill. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) recommends testing pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer, then adjusting as needed. Its general guidance is to drain and refill every three to four months or as the manufacturer recommends; follow your spa’s schedule and the condition of its water. See PHTA’s consumer maintenance guidance.

- Test pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer with test strips or a water-testing meter.
- Adjust the water according to the product directions and your spa manual.
- If a drain-and-refill is due, plan it as part of seasonal maintenance rather than assuming every tub needs one specifically in fall.
A Kansas City dealer recommends an early-fall drain and refill for its local conditions, but that timing is regional—not a rule for every climate or spa. Its advice is available at Pool & Spa Patio’s fall maintenance guide.
3. Clean the filter and check the equipment
PHTA’s general maintenance cadence is to rinse the filter weekly and deep-clean it monthly with filter cleaner. If you are shutting the spa down, Jacuzzi advises removing and cleaning the filters and cleaning the filter basket as part of its preparation procedure. Check your manual for the correct method and any model-specific cautions.

- Rinse the filter on the regular schedule recommended for your spa.
- Use a filter-cleaning solution for the monthly deep clean, following its label and the spa manual.
- Before shutdown, clean the filter and basket as directed, then inspect accessible equipment for obvious issues before winterizing.
4. Inspect the cover and secure it properly
Check that the cover fits closely and that its latches and seals are intact. Look for cracks, sagging, or signs it has become waterlogged. A well-fitting insulated cover helps retain heat and prevent freezing, according to PHTA; replace yours only if inspection shows a problem, and verify that any replacement fits your spa’s size and model. Jacuzzi advises keeping the cover firmly in place when the spa is not in use and securing it for shutdown. Its guide says: “Place your cover over your hot tub and lock it down.”
5. Use the right freeze-protection plan
If the spa will stay in service
Keep the spa filled and maintain water and circulation as the owner’s manual specifies. Some models have a freeze-protection mode, but features and temperature limits are model-specific. Jacuzzi describes such a mode for the models covered by its guide; do not assume your spa has the same feature or settings.

- 3IN1 WEEKLY HOT TUB CHEMICALS — CLEANER, CLARIFIER & WATER CONDITIONER (4 WEEK STARTER SUPPLY): One pre-measured pouch delivers all three in one simple step. Pour 2 oz per 500 gallons, run jets on high for 30 seconds, and wait 2 hours before soaking. No draining required. Helps maintain cleaner, clearer spa water between deep cleans.
- CLEARS HIDDEN HOT TUB GUNK FROM JETS & PIPES: Body oils, lotion, sunscreen, and sweat collect inside hot tub plumbing where you cannot see it. Bio Ouster 3in1 Weekly Care helps break down existing buildup while preventing new residue from forming in jets, pipes, and internal plumbing. Surface foam during treatment is the formula working — settles within 15 minutes.
- SOFTER HOT TUB WATER THAT FEELS BETTER ON SKIN: Built-in water conditioning helps hot tub water feel softer, cleaner, and less harsh during long soaks. When your water is already balanced, weekly use helps it stay that way. Bleach-free formula is safe for acrylic spas, vinyl liners, inflatable hot tubs, and jet components.
- WORKS WITH ALL HOT TUBS & SANITIZER SYSTEMS: Compatible with acrylic hot tubs, inflatable spas, swim spas, jetted tubs, and cold plunge tubs. Works alongside chlorine, bromine, saltwater, mineral, ozone, UV, and biguanide systems. Important: not a sanitizer replacement — continue using your regular sanitizer as directed.
- MADE IN USA — TRUSTED BY 100,000+ HOT TUB OWNERS: Made in the USA and formulated specifically for hot tubs, spas, and cold plunge maintenance. Designed to simplify weekly spa care and held to our Gunk-Free standard. Trusted by more than 100,000 hot tub owners.
Bestway’s cold-weather guidance applies specifically to its inflatable spas equipped with its named Freeze Shield system. It is not a general instruction for other inflatable tubs or hard-sided spas. Check the guidance for your exact model before relying on an automatic protection feature.
If the spa will be shut down
Draining the visible water is not enough if water remains in plumbing or equipment: it can freeze. Follow the manufacturer’s winterization procedure, which may call for clearing water from pump fittings and jet plumbing, cleaning the shell, and securing the cover. Jacuzzi Canada also emphasizes clearing residual water from the pump housing, filter canister, heater, and jet piping. The exact components and steps depend on the spa. See its Canadian winterization guidance.

- Use the manual for your specific model to identify all components that must be drained or cleared.
- Drain the spa and clear water from the specified fittings, equipment, and plumbing.
- Clean the shell and secure the cover as the manufacturer directs.
A wet/dry shop vacuum can help remove residual water from fittings and plumbing, as described in Jacuzzi’s U.S. winter-preparation guide, but it is not a substitute for completing every model-specific winterization step. If you cannot confidently drain the required equipment and plumbing, consider professional winterization rather than leaving water in the system.
