Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can cut disposable plastic in the kitchen with five everyday habits: reuse food containers, take bags when shopping, refill a bottle or thermos, consider a suitable tap-water filter, and keep plastic items in use longer. Start with what you already own; the easiest reduction is avoiding a new disposable item.
1. Pack and store food in reusable containers
Use a container you already have for packed lunches, leftovers, and pantry storage instead of reaching for single-use bags, wraps, or packaging. EPA recommends reusable containers for packed lunches and identifies reusable food-service ware as its first choice where a system supports repeated use.
If you need to add a container, choose one that suits your routine and can be cleaned and used repeatedly. EPA names ceramic, porcelain, glass, and metal as durable, less-toxic material options when certified reusable food-service products are limited; that guidance does not establish one material as best for every household or across all life-cycle impacts. 2. Bring a bag and choose less packaging
Keep a reusable shopping bag near your keys, in your car, or folded in a work bag so it is on hand when you shop. When choosing between similar products, favor the one with less packaging. Reusing bags you already own is a practical starting point; there is no need to buy a special bag to begin.

EPA says it does not have information establishing the environmental benefits of paper versus plastic shopping bags. Its practical advice is to reduce how many bags you use, reuse them, and recycle them when possible—not to assume one material is always better. EPA’s recycling FAQ explains this qualification.
3. Refill a bottle or thermos
Carry a refillable bottle for water or a thermos for another drink instead of buying a disposable bottle or carton. Refill and reuse the one you have; the habit matters more than replacing it with a new product. EPA recommends carrying a water bottle or thermos as an alternative to disposable drink containers. 4. Consider a tap-water filter if it fits your needs
If filtered tap water works for your household, EPA suggests considering a tap filter and refilling bottles with that water rather than purchasing bottled water. A filter is not automatically necessary, and its suitability depends on your local water and the particular model. Check the filter’s claims and the water-quality information for your area; this general guidance does not establish that any specific filter makes water safe or improves it.
5. Keep plastic items in use and recycle by local rules
Maintain and repair plastic kitchen items where practical, and reuse or repurpose containers before replacing them. Extending the life of something you already own avoids creating demand for a replacement.

When an item is no longer usable, check your local recycling program rather than relying on the resin identification number stamped on it. That number identifies the type of plastic; it does not guarantee that your community accepts the item. Plastic bags, wrap, and film generally should not go in household recycling bins. Look for local collection instructions or a store drop-off option, and confirm which items that program accepts. EPA recycling guidance covers local acceptance and separate routes for bags and film.

EPA states, “The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place.” Its estimates put U.S. plastic containers and packaging generated in 2018 at 14.5 million tons—about 5.0% of municipal solid waste. Of that amount, an estimated 1.98 million tons, or 13.6%, were recycled. These are historical 2018 estimates, not current-year measurements; EPA says they draw on American Chemistry Council and other industry data.
