Oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit and apples can all bring natural color and texture to holiday decorations. Citrus has the clearest documented drying method; apples need fruit-specific preparation, and cranberries can be strung as another garland option. Choose the fruit for the look you want, then follow a method suited to that fruit rather than assuming every slice dries the same way.

Five fruits for holiday decorations

1. Oranges

Navel oranges are Clemson University horticulture associate Barbara H. Smith’s favorite citrus for drying. Their bright wheels work in garlands, wreaths, tree decorations, gift toppers or a bowl display. Clemson’s citrus instructions provide a practical starting point for preparing orange slices.

2. Lemons

Lemons can be dried like other citrus, according to Clemson Extension. Mix their pale yellow slices with orange wheels for a contrasting garland or wreath.

3. Limes

Limes are another citrus option named by Clemson Extension. Use them as a green accent among orange and lemon slices; the source does not provide a separate lime recipe.

4. Grapefruit

Clemson Extension also lists grapefruit as suitable for drying. Its guidance does not give grapefruit-specific timings, so monitor the slices as they dry instead of treating an orange duration as a guarantee.

5. Apples

University of Wisconsin Extension lists apple slices as garland material. Apples brown when exposed to air; its plant-craft supplement suggests treating slices with lemon juice and salt. The extension material does not provide an apple drying schedule, so use an apple-specific preservation method rather than applying citrus timings.

How to dry citrus slices

Clemson University Home & Garden Information Center’s December 5, 2024 instructions are specifically for citrus. Slice the fruit evenly, pat away surface moisture and arrange slices without overlap on parchment-lined trays. Thickness and appliance behavior affect drying time, so check progress rather than relying on the clock alone.

  • Due to the reliable production process, the fruit slices are beautifully colored.

Oven method

  1. Heat the oven to 175°F. If it cannot hold that temperature, use its lowest setting up to 200°F.
  2. Place citrus slices in a single layer on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  3. Turn the slices every 30 minutes. Clemson gives an approximate drying time of 3 to 5 hours.
  4. Cool slices on a wire rack. Check for sticky or soft areas; leave any slices with soft spots to air-dry on the rack for several days.

Dehydrator method

  1. Set the dehydrator to 130°F and arrange slices without overlap.
  2. Turn the slices hourly. Clemson gives an approximate drying time of 12 to 14 hours.
  3. Cool the slices and check for soft or sticky areas before storing them.

The two methods use different temperatures and schedules; they are not directly interchangeable. Clemson notes that an oven is easier to watch, while a dehydrator can produce more uniform slices with less risk of burning. Use the appliance you have and monitor the fruit as it dries.

A separate citrus-garland method

The National Park Service’s Fort Vancouver craft instructions use a different approach: bake citrus at 250°F for about 3 to 4 hours, turning the slices after 1½ hours and watching for browning. The instructions note that slices may continue drying after they are strung. This is a separate craft method, not a reason to combine its temperature or timing with Clemson’s method.

Turn dried fruit into decorations

  • Garland: Thread citrus slices with twine, leaving space between them so the garland hangs naturally. Scissors and an optional embroidery needle can help with threading.
  • Wreath: Secure citrus clusters to a wreath base with florist wire. A grapevine base, greenery and Spanish moss are among the materials shown in Clemson’s example.
  • Tree or gifts: Hang individual slices or small clusters as ornaments, or tie one to a wrapped gift with ribbon or twine.
  • Bowl display: Arrange dry slices in a bowl for a simple seasonal accent.
  • Simmering potpourri: Combine citrus with cinnamon sticks and cloves for stovetop potpourri. Keep it on the stove only while attended; do not leave simmering potpourri unattended.

For citrus, useful materials include a sharp knife and cutting board, parchment, baking sheets, an oven or dehydrator, a wire cooling rack, and twine, florist wire or ribbon for decorating. The National Park Service advises that an adult handle the sharp knife.

Check slices before storing or displaying

Store fully dry citrus slices in an airtight container in a cool, dark place until you are ready to decorate. Clemson says correctly stored slices can last several years, but the actual lifespan depends on how thoroughly they dried and the storage conditions. If a slice still feels sticky or soft, let it air-dry rather than sealing it away.
