A brick fire pit is more likely to avoid heat-related damage when the fire-exposed chamber is lined with firebrick and the pit sits on a stable, nonflammable base. The five concepts below vary in shape and setting—not in proven lifespan: no source establishes that one footprint or layout lasts longer than another. Before building, confirm that the materials and design suit your fuel, intended use, and local rules.
What helps a brick fire pit last?
Protect the outer masonry from direct fire exposure. The Bismarck Fire Department advises lining a fire pit with firebrick to help protect masonry from cracking or fragmenting as moisture inside it rapidly expands when heated. That is the central durability detail behind all five ideas below; a decorative brick shell alone does not establish that its bricks are appropriate for a fire chamber.

Fireplace requirements can offer useful context, but they are not automatically backyard fire-pit specifications. The 2024 International Building Code’s masonry-fireplace provisions address fireplace construction and include requirements for firebox materials, firebrick lining in a particular configuration, firebrick joint size, and refractory mortar. Do not treat the specified lining thickness or other fireplace details as universal requirements for a freestanding outdoor pit. Confirm the applicable code and use materials suited to the actual project. The 2024 International Building Code, Chapter 21 is a starting point for understanding that distinction.

1. Circular dry-stack ring
A simple, low circle creates a classic gathering point and works naturally as a freestanding feature. The dry-stacked exterior is an aesthetic choice, not evidence that landscape blocks can safely face direct flame. Plan a separate firebrick-lined chamber and a stable base for the intended fuel and use.

2. Mortared circular shell with a lined chamber
Use the exterior brickwork to give the pit a more finished architectural look, while keeping firebrick at the fire-exposed interior. This separates the visual material from the material doing the heat-facing work. Refractory mortar appears in the ICC’s masonry-fireplace provisions, but that does not make every product or fireplace detail suitable for every outdoor pit; verify the mortar’s intended use for your design.
3. Square or rectangular enclosure
A square or rectangular outline can align with a formal patio, straight paths, or a seating arrangement. Keep the chamber materials appropriate for fire exposure and specify a firebrick liner. Shape changes the look and layout, not a documented service life: available sources do not establish that corners or a circular footprint make a pit last longer.

4. Raised masonry pit
Elevate the fire chamber on a stable, nonflammable base to make it a more prominent focal point and distinguish it from a ground-level ring. Plan placement and clearances before choosing the height or surrounding seating. The Kansas State Fire Marshal recommends keeping a backyard pit at least 10 feet from structures and neighboring yards, with 25 feet preferable; these are that authority’s recommendations, not a nationwide code.
5. Low-profile pit integrated with nonflammable paving
Set a round or polygonal, firebrick-lined chamber into a gathering area of concrete, gravel, or pavers. The paving ties the pit into a patio while providing a nonflammable surface around it. Kansas guidance recommends a nonflammable surface and says not to place a fire pit on a wooden deck or directly on grass. Check local requirements for placement and clearances before laying out the surrounding space.

Plan the site and use before construction
- Confirm local rules. Fire restrictions, permits, and clearance requirements vary by place and conditions. Kansas State Fire Marshal guidance recommends at least 10 feet from structures and a neighboring yard, says 25 feet is preferable, and advises against covered porches and low branches. Check the rules that apply where the pit will be used.
- Choose a stable, nonflammable surface. Do not place the pit on a wooden deck or directly on grass, according to Kansas State Fire Marshal guidance. Victoria’s Country Fire Authority separately recommends a stable, nonflammable surface and clearing a 3-metre area around and above a fire pit; that guidance applies to Victoria, Australia, not as a substitute for rules elsewhere.
- Keep it supervised and prepare to extinguish it. The CFA recommends adult supervision and keeping at least 10 litres of water or a hose nearby. Follow local fire authority guidance for the situation and season.
- Burn suitable fuel and consider neighbors. The U.S. EPA’s historic Burn Wise page recommends seasoned, dry wood, checking local restrictions, and considering wind and neighbors. It advises against burning green wood, construction waste, plastic, garbage, or yard waste. The EPA says the page stopped being updated on October 30, 2025, so use current local authorities for active restrictions.
- Use a screen when appropriate. Bismarck Fire Department guidance says to use a spark screen if one is provided with the unit; the Kansas State Fire Marshal recommends buying one for additional protection. A screen does not replace safe placement, supervision, or checking local rules.
These concepts are layout ideas, not tested plans. A project still needs site-specific decisions about the chamber, base, materials, and construction details. The sources cited here do not establish foundation depths, structural dimensions, mortar recipes, or a guaranteed service life.
