Lauren Joseph’s January 17, 2020 Epicurious comparison covered Stasher, Zip Top, HomeLuxe, Pure Silicone, and (re)zip. It considered whether bags sealed, how readily they cleaned, freezer performance—including pressing out air and resealing after taking out food—and suitability for sous-vide cooking. Joseph selected Stasher overall, described Zip Top as another strong choice, and said clip-on closures made the other tested options less convenient for her. Consumer Reports’ search-result summary says its experts tested five silicone-bag brands for stains, smells, and leaks, and notes that silicone bags can tear or puncture. The full article was not accessible for this comparison, so no brand-level results or further testing details can be established from that summary. Consumer Reports’ summary is not enough to support a current five-product ranking.
Silicone or PEVA: which material fits your use?
Choose silicone when heat-use options matter
Silicone bags may offer more heat-use versatility than PEVA, but allowed temperatures and methods depend on the exact bag. For example, Stasher lists microwave use and oven use up to 425°F for its Half Gallon model, and its FAQ says the bags are freezer-suitable. These are the manufacturer’s specifications, not an independent verification. Avoid assuming that another silicone brand—or even another model—has identical instructions. Consider PEVA when a slimmer bag is the priority
In Joseph’s 2020 comparison, (re)zip PEVA bags were thinner and easier to pack than the silicone choices she reviewed. The trade-off she reported was a closure that stiffened after freezing and no intended microwave or high-heat use. Those historical observations do not establish the behavior or instructions of every current PEVA bag; follow the exact product’s care label.
Choose a shape for the food and the way you store it
Bag shape changes how it fits a routine. Joseph found stand-up bags useful for bulk-bin snacks and flatter sandwich shapes easier to layer and press air from when freezing. These are her observations, not a universal test result. Before buying, match the usable capacity and footprint to what you store, how you stack it, and whether you need room to reach in and clean the corners.

What to check before choosing a reusable bag
- Seal: Check whether the closure is easy to use and whether the manufacturer describes it as leak-resistant or leak-free. A brand claim is not an independent guarantee; test a newly purchased bag with water before relying on it for liquids.
- Capacity and shape: Compare stated volume and dimensions with the food, shelf, lunch bag, or freezer space you have. A tall stand-up style and a flat sandwich shape serve different storage jobs.
- Cleaning: Look for explicit dishwasher or hand-washing directions and whether the design can be cleaned without straining the closure or seams.
- Freezing: Check whether the bag is freezer-safe and whether its closure remains practical to open and reseal while cold. Leave room for food that expands as it freezes.
- Heat use: Confirm separately whether the exact model is approved for microwave, oven, or sous-vide use, and follow any stated temperature limits. Do not infer heat safety from the material alone.
- Durability: Silicone is not immune to punctures or tears. Keep bags away from sharp utensils and inspect them for damage.
- Price and availability: Compare current price, size, and stock for the exact model; the 2020 comparison does not establish today’s value or availability.
A current example: Stasher Half Gallon
Stasher’s official page lists the Half Gallon bag at 64 fl oz / 1,893 mL and 8.5 × 10.25 × 1.5 inches. The company describes it as food-grade platinum silicone, says it has a patented Pinch-Loc seal, and lists dishwasher, microwave, freezer, and oven use up to 425°F. These are manufacturer-provided specifications and claims, not independent test results. The page also says to avoid open flames, broilers, and sharp objects. Check the current product instructions for the exact model before using it for cooking.

Stasher says its bags can be washed in a dishwasher or by hand with warm, soapy water. The company advises against turning them inside out to help preserve the seal, warns that sharp objects can damage them, and notes that strongly colored or scented foods may temporarily stain or leave odors. A reusable bag does not replace safe temperature control. The FDA recommends keeping refrigerators at or below 40°F (4°C) and freezers at 0°F (-18°C). It says food held continuously at 0°F remains safe, though its quality declines over time; freezer burn affects quality, not safety. Follow the FDA’s food-storage guidance, and check leftovers for signs of spoilage.
