You can improve indoor air without scented air fresheners, sprays, or chemical air treatments by first reducing pollution sources, then ventilating when outdoor air is clean, and using filtration as a supplement. “Chemical-free” air is not realistic: the practical goal is to avoid unnecessary emissions and manage the pollutants that matter.
Start by removing or reducing pollution sources
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies source control as usually the most effective indoor-air strategy, followed by ventilation and air cleaning. That order matters: a purifier cannot reliably compensate for an ongoing source. See the EPA’s overview of improving indoor air quality.

1. Keep tobacco smoke out
Do not allow smoking indoors. Preventing smoke from entering is more effective than trying to capture its emissions after they have spread through a room.

Use fewer products and materials that release pollutants when practical. Close containers after use and follow label directions, including instructions for storage and ventilation. Household sources can include cleaners, air fresheners, and other products; EPA describes examples in its guide to indoor particulate-matter sources.

3. Choose lower-emission products when replacing something
When a substitution makes sense, look for credible emissions information rather than relying on broad “chemical-free” claims. WHO guidance for children’s public settings discusses replacing products with low-emission cleaning materials; it is not a universal certification or guarantee for every household product. 4. Ventilate during pollutant-generating work
For tasks such as painting, cooking, sanding, or maintenance, follow product instructions and increase ventilation when it is safe and practical. Control the source and keep people away from the work area as appropriate; ventilation should not conflict with product safety directions or create another hazard.

5. Open windows when outdoor air is clean
Outdoor air can dilute indoor pollutants, but ventilation is not automatically beneficial. Keep windows closed when nearby smoke or other outdoor pollution would worsen indoor conditions, and consider weather and safety before opening them. 6. Run exhaust fans that vent outdoors
Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans that discharge outside, especially when cooking or creating moisture. Exhaust near the source helps remove contaminants rather than merely moving them to another part of the building.
Maintain building systems and address specific hazards
7. Maintain fuel-burning appliances
Have fuel-burning equipment inspected and address suspected leaks or other faults promptly. An air cleaner is not a fix for a combustion source. If you suspect a fuel leak or an immediate combustion hazard, leave the area and contact the appropriate emergency or utility service.
8. Maintain HVAC filters
Clean or replace filters as directed by the equipment manufacturer. Before upgrading a filter, confirm that it is compatible with the HVAC system; a filter that the system cannot handle may interfere with airflow. 9. Consider a properly sized portable HEPA cleaner for particles
A portable HEPA air cleaner can reduce airborne particles in the room or area it serves. Choose a unit with capacity appropriate for that space, keep up with maintenance and filter replacement, and treat it as an addition to source control and ventilation—not a whole-house solution. Air cleaners generally are not designed to remove gases, and a particle filter does not automatically capture vapors. EPA explains how effectiveness depends on collection efficiency and the volume of air drawn through the unit in its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home. EPA does not certify or recommend particular air-cleaner brands.

Repair leaks, remove excess water, and keep damp areas clean and dry. Persistent moisture can create conditions that support biological contaminants, including mold. EPA’s guidance on biological contaminants discusses the connection between moisture and indoor growth.
11. Keep indoor humidity in EPA’s guide range
EPA’s Care for Your Air guide advises maintaining indoor relative humidity at 30–50 percent; the source result does not specify a publication year. A humidity monitor can help identify persistently high levels, which can increase the likelihood of mold. See EPA’s Care for Your Air guide.

12. Test for radon and act on an elevated result
Radon requires testing and, if levels are elevated, a response aimed at reducing radon entry or remediating the building. A purifier is not a substitute. EPA’s indoor-air improvement guidance recommends testing and fixing a radon problem if one is found.

A pleasant smell does not mean a pollutant was removed
Fragrance can mask an odor without removing its source, and some cleaners, fragrances, and air fresheners can themselves contribute to indoor pollutants. If the goal is cleaner air without added scents, avoid using fragrance as a substitute for source control.

EPA says ozone at concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards has little potential to remove indoor contaminants, while ozone is a lung irritant. Do not use ozone generators as an occupied-room air-cleaning method. See EPA’s explanation of ozone generators sold as air cleaners.

Do not count on houseplants to clean the room
EPA says there is no evidence that a reasonable number of indoor plants removes significant quantities of pollutants in homes or offices. Plants can be decorative, but they are not a dependable air-cleaning strategy; over-watered soil may also promote microorganisms. See EPA’s indoor-air guidance.
What a purifier can—and cannot—do
Filtration is useful for some pollutants, but performance depends on what the device captures, how much air it moves, the space it serves, and whether it is maintained. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home reports that several studies using portable HEPA cleaners demonstrated small improvements in cardiovascular and respiratory health; it notes that improvements are typically small and not always noticeable to an individual. This evidence does not mean a purifier removes every pollutant or treats a building problem.
Before choosing equipment, compare the pollutant addressed (particles versus gases), room or HVAC coverage, airflow or capacity, system compatibility, noise, energy use, and replacement-filter requirements. Match the device to the problem rather than assuming that “air purifier” means removal of all unwanted substances.
