UniKey can replace carrying a physical key, card, or fob in a compatible access-control systemโbut installing an app alone will not convert an ordinary deadbolt into a smart lock. The door needs supported reader hardware, and an organization administrator must grant access.
What UniKey replacesโand what it does not
UniKey describes its business as a mobile-credential platform used with locks and access-control equipment made by partner manufacturers. In a compatible installation, the phone can serve as the credential that would otherwise be carried as a key card or fob. That is different from replacing the lock itself: the available documentation does not establish that the app works with any door or standard residential deadbolt.

UniKey lists products including SR5, AccessIQ, SR3, PDK Touch io, and Verroo Smart Strike. These are examples of powered products in its platform, not a claim that every product works with every door. Compatibility depends on the actual hardware and its configuration. Do you need a UniKey reader?
For the BlueKey app, yes: its Google Play listing specifies BlueKey SR2 Readers. Before relying on phone entry, confirm that the door has the compatible reader and that the access-control system is configured for the credential. The listing describes BlueKey for offices and other facilities; it does not establish general compatibility with home doors. BlueKey on Google Play.

How BlueKey access is set up
- Ask the site administrator to grant access. Access is managed by the organization; downloading the app does not itself authorize entry.
- Install the app and accept the mobile credential. UniKeyโs end-user guide describes this acceptance step after the administrator grants access.
- Use the phone at a supported SR2 reader. The BlueKey listing describes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) access. Depending on the system, a user may present the phone like a card or leave it in a pocket. These are BlueKey system capabilities, not guarantees for every product using UniKey technology.
What changes compared with carrying a physical key?
| Consideration | BlueKey mobile credential | Physical key, card, or fob |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Requires a compatible BlueKey SR2 Reader, according to the app listing. | Depends on the lock or access-control system; the reviewed documentation does not establish a universal fallback. |
| Who grants access | An organization administrator grants the credential; the user must accept it. | Not stated for all physical systems; access is managed by the relevant property or system owner. |
| Phone and wireless use | The BlueKey listing describes BLE and phone-based entry. | Does not require a phone for the credential itself. |
| Sharing and revocation | The BlueKey listing says eKeys can be shared or revoked remotely. | Not stated for all physical systems; lost or copied credentials may require action specific to the system. |
| Internet availability | A 2017 UniKey SR2 administrator FAQ says accepted credentials are stored on the device and can be used offline; this is dated documentation, not a verified statement about every current product. | Not stated for all systems. |
| Fallback if the phone is unavailable | The reviewed sources do not establish a universal mechanical-key fallback for BlueKey. Confirm the specific installationโs backup method. | Depends on the particular lock and credential arrangement. |
Offline access and security claims
A UniKey SR2 Administrator FAQ (AN1005), dated 2017, says an accepted credential is stored on the mobile device for use without an internet connection. The same FAQ describes AES-128 encryption and a PKI implementation. These are historical vendor statements about the SR2 system, not an independent security assessment or confirmation of how every current UniKey-powered product works. Check these details before specifying or relying on app entry
- Identify the exact reader and access-control system installed at the door; for BlueKey, verify it is a BlueKey SR2 Reader.
- Confirm with the building or system administrator that your account will receive the right credential and that the reader is configured for it.
- Check the current app listing and hardware documentation for phone operating-system and BLE compatibility. The minimum iOS 10.0 and Android 5.0 requirements in UniKeyโs end-user guide are legacy figures, not reliable current compatibility advice.
- Ask how entry works if your phone is lost, uncharged, unavailable, or unable to connect over BLE. The reviewed material does not promise a mechanical-key backup.
- Confirm the systemโs credential-sharing and revocation process with the administrator, especially for staff, contractors, or visitors.
