5 Appliances You Should Unplug Right Away After Use

These five portable appliances deserve an unplugging habit after every use: space heaters, hair dryers, curling irons, clothes irons, and toasters. Learn when to disconnect them, what warning signs require immediate action, and why power strips are not suitable for heaters.

Five portable appliances deserve an unplugging habit after every use: portable electric space heaters, hair dryers, curling irons, clothes irons, and toasters. Each can create an unattended heat, fire, shock, or accidental-operation risk. Turn the appliance off first, let it cool where necessary, and then disconnect it safely.

Switching an appliance off is not always the same as disconnecting it from the electrical supply. For portable appliances that produce heat—or that may be exposed to water—unplugging after use is a simple way to reduce shock, fire, and accidental-start risks.

“Right away” does not mean pulling the cord while an appliance is still dangerously hot or wet. Turn it off first, allow hot surfaces to cool enough to handle safely, then unplug it by gripping the plug—not the cord.

1. Portable electric space heaters

Portable heaters are high-wattage, heat-producing appliances that can ignite nearby materials or overheat a damaged cord, plug, outlet, extension cord, or power strip. They should not be left operating while you sleep, leave the room, or leave the home.

  • Keep the heater at least 3 feet from curtains, bedding, furniture, paper, clothing, and other combustible materials.
  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip.
  • Turn it off before leaving the room and unplug it when it is not being used.
  • Keep children and pets away from the hot surface, and place the heater on a stable, level surface.

If the plug or cord feels hot, disconnect the heater as safely as possible and stop using it. Have it assessed by an authorized repair professional or replace it. A hot plug or outlet can indicate a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, damaged wiring, or an appliance fault.

2. Hair dryers

A hair dryer combines electricity with a wet-room environment. If a plugged-in dryer falls into a sink, bathtub, or other water, it can remain a shock hazard—even when its switch is in the off position. A worn switch could also allow unexpected operation.

Switch the dryer off, unplug it after every use, and store it where it cannot fall into water. Never reach into water for a fallen appliance. If a hair dryer falls into water, do not touch the water or the appliance; disconnect power only if you can do so without contact with the water, then replace the appliance or have it evaluated appropriately.

Bathrooms should have properly functioning ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection. A GFCI outlet or plug can reduce the severity of certain ground-fault shocks, but it does not make it safe to use a damaged appliance, handle plugs with wet hands, or leave a hair dryer beside a sink or tub. Follow local electrical code and the manufacturer’s instructions for any GFCI installation.

3. Curling irons and wands

Curling irons have an exposed hot barrel that can remain hot after the styling switch is turned off. A hot iron left on a counter, near a towel, paper, bedding, clothing, or other combustible material can cause damage or potentially start a fire.

After styling, switch the iron off, place it on a stable heat-resistant surface, allow it to cool safely, and unplug it immediately afterward. Do not wrap the cord tightly around the hot appliance. Before leaving the room or home, confirm that the iron is disconnected and fully cooled.

4. Clothes irons

A clothes iron combines an exposed hot soleplate with an appliance that is often used near fabric. If it remains energized on an ironing board or falls onto clothing, the heat can scorch materials and create a preventable fire hazard.

Empty or store it according to the manufacturer’s instructions once it has cooled.

5. Toasters

Toasters contain heating elements and can accumulate crumbs and other flammable debris. A toaster that remains plugged in can be energized even when it appears idle, and a fault or stuck control can create an overheating risk.

Unplug the toaster when it is not being used, especially before leaving home or during a long period away. Let it cool before moving or cleaning it, and remove crumbs according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Never insert a metal object into a toaster, even when it appears to be off. If food is stuck, disconnect the toaster and allow it to cool before addressing the problem.

Unplugging is not the only kitchen-safety rule

For cooking equipment, the most important control is supervision. Stay in the kitchen when frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling, and turn off the burner when you leave. For simmering, baking, or roasting, check the food regularly and remain in the home. Unplugging a toaster after use is a useful precaution, but it does not replace safe cooking practices.

Do not casually unplug essential appliances

This advice is for portable appliances designed to be disconnected after use. Do not unplug a refrigerator, freezer, sump pump, medical device, alarm system, smoke or security system, or other essential equipment simply to follow a blanket “unplug everything” rule. If an appliance must remain available for health, food preservation, flood prevention, or security, follow its instructions and address electrical problems through proper repair or inspection.

What about standby power?

Some electronics draw a small amount of electricity while switched off or in standby mode. Unplugging them can reduce that standby load, but energy savings are a secondary reason to disconnect the five appliances above. Their main issue is heat, water exposure, or the possibility of a fault while no one is watching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For lower-risk electronics such as televisions, chargers, speakers, and office equipment, a smart power strip for standby power can simplify shutdown by disconnecting selected devices when the main device is turned off. A power strip with a master outlet may serve a similar purpose, depending on the equipment and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not use a smart power strip, ordinary power strip, or extension cord as a substitute for the direct-wall-outlet rule for a portable space heater. Do not assume that a power strip is appropriate for a hair dryer, curling iron, clothes iron, or toaster either; disconnect those appliances individually as directed by their manuals.

A simple leave-the-house check

  1. Turn off the space heater, hair dryer, curling iron, iron, and toaster.
  2. Allow hot appliances to cool on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  3. Unplug them by holding the plug, not pulling the cable.
  4. Check for hot outlets, damaged cords, unusual smells, or scorch marks.
  5. Confirm that no essential appliance or life-safety system was disconnected accidentally.

The goal is not to unplug every electrical product in a building. It is to disconnect portable appliances that create a meaningful unattended heat or water-related hazard, while repairing or replacing anything showing signs of electrical trouble.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “unplug right away” mean for a hot appliance?

“Right away” means turn the appliance off first, allow any hot surface to cool enough to handle safely, and then unplug it by gripping the plug. Do not unplug with wet hands, yank the cord, or reach into water for a fallen appliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I plug a portable space heater into a smart power strip?

No. Use a power strip or smart power strip for suitable lower-risk electronics such as televisions, chargers, speakers, and office equipment. Portable electric heaters must be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension cord.

What should I do if an appliance keeps tripping the breaker?

Disconnect the appliance if it is safe to do so and stop using it. Arrange authorized appliance repair or replacement; if the outlet or circuit is involved, contact a qualified electrician. Repeated breaker trips, hot plugs, sparks, smoke, burning odors, and damaged cords should not be ignored.

The Bottom Line

Always switch off and unplug portable space heaters, hair dryers, curling irons, clothes irons, and toasters after use—once hot surfaces can be handled safely. Keep heaters directly in a wall outlet, keep electrical appliances away from water, and stop using anything with a hot plug, damaged cord, smoke, sparks, burning odors, unusual noises, or repeated breaker trips.
