4 Reasons Why Your Cactus Has Brown Spots—and What to Check

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brown spots on a cactus can be normal corking, sun damage, water-related stress or rot, or pest and disease damage. Color alone cannot identify the cause: check whether the tissue is firm or soft, where the mark appears, whether it is spreading, and what changed in the plant’s care. Don’t automatically water more, water less, or cut the spot away.

How to assess a brown spot

Start by examining the affected area and comparing it with healthy tissue. These clues narrow down possibilities, but they do not replace a species-aware diagnosis.

  • Texture: Firm, dry, barklike tissue is different from soft, watery tissue that is deteriorating.
  • Location: Note whether the mark is near the base on older growth, on a side that was recently exposed to stronger light, or near a stem tip. Location is a clue, not proof.
  • Change over time: A stable mark differs from one that is enlarging or spreading.
  • Recent care changes: Consider a move into brighter light, a change in watering, or other recent changes.
  • Plant type and other symptoms: Tropical and holiday cacti may need different care from desert cacti. Look for visible pests or other damage as well.

Four reasons a cactus can develop brown spots

1. Natural corking or age-related hardening

As cactus tissue ages, its outer surface can lose green chlorophyll, turn brown, and harden, much like bark. This often happens near the base on older growth. A cactus specialist quoted by Ask Extension describes corking as “somewhat analogous to bark formation” as old surface tissue browns and hardens. Ask Extension’s response on cactus type and disease is dated May 12, 2020.

Extensive or premature corking may also reflect growing conditions, not age alone. In the tropical cactus discussed in that Ask Extension response, inadequate light and water deficit—including too little water in the medium or insufficient roots—were identified as possible contributors. Do not apply that advice as a universal watering schedule: cactus types have different needs.

2. Sun damage after a change in light

Tan or brown patches may develop when a succulent accustomed to lower light is moved into bright or direct sun. Think about whether the plant was recently moved or its exposure changed. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s guide to common succulent problems discusses sun damage following a light change. When increasing light, acclimate the plant gradually rather than moving it abruptly into stronger sun.

3. Water-related stress or rot

A brown mark by itself does not prove overwatering. Texture and progression matter: Texas A&M describes soft rot as watery, soft, black tissue that can deteriorate rapidly when conditions favor the bacteria. Disease symptoms vary among cacti, so a brown patch alone is not enough to diagnose rot or a particular disease. See the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Texas Plant Disease Handbook.

4. Pests or disease

Inspect the plant for visible insects, mites, and damage associated with them. An Ask Extension response on Opuntia cactus discoloration lists aphids, spider mites, mealybugs, and scale among pests that can damage cacti; it also advises paying attention to tan areas that enlarge. Cacti can have diseases that produce spots, but their patterns vary. Do not conclude that a brown patch is fungal based on color alone.

What to do about brown spots

  1. Inspect the plant. Check texture, location, spread, visible pests, and the cactus type. Note recent changes in light or watering.
  2. Address the likely cause cautiously. Correct a suspected environmental issue, but do not automatically increase or reduce watering based only on the spot’s color.
  3. If pests are visible, use only a product whose label includes cactus use, and follow the label directions.
  4. If symptoms are soft, rapidly spreading, or severe, seek identification from a local extension office or plant diagnostic service. Texas A&M’s disease handbook describes cases with different management limits, including some for which no control is available; a cure cannot be assumed without identifying the problem.

Should you remove a brown section?

Not every brown spot needs to be cut away. A firm, stable, barklike area may be corking, while a clearly dead or necrotic stem segment is a different situation. For the specific reader’s cactus addressed in its response, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension recommends removing a dead segment at its base with a sharp, clean, sanitized tool. That is not a general instruction to prune every brown patch.
