The right route from a 3D printer to a kiln depends on what the printer deposited. Directly extruded clay is fragile greenware: dry it completely, then fire it to the schedule for that clay body. Ceramic-filled filament and technical ceramic resin or slurry are different systems; they may need cleaning, binder removal, debinding, or sintering rather than a pottery-style drying and bisque firing.
First identify what your printer deposited
“3D-printed ceramics” can mean several materially different workflows. Before planning kiln time, identify the feedstock and follow the instructions for that specific material and printer.

| Route | What is printed | What happens before or during firing |
|---|---|---|
| Direct clay extrusion | Soft clay shaped directly by the printer | Dry the greenware completely; fire according to the clay body’s range and schedule. A later glaze firing may be used. |
| Ceramic-filled filament | Ceramic particles held in a plastic carrier or binder | The carrier must be debound before firing. Requirements vary by filament; this is not ordinary wet-clay firing. |
| Ceramic resin or slurry | A technical ceramic material processed through a resin or slurry system | Product-specific cleaning, drying, debinding, and sintering may be required. |
For a practical clay-printing workflow, FabLab Arnhem’s Lutum guide covers model preparation, slicing for the printer and nozzle, loading fine clay, checking extrusion, and monitoring the print. Its machine instructions are specific to the Lutum setup; for example, its warning not to exceed 5 bar applies to that printer’s pressure system, not to other clay printers.

A fresh clay print is greenware, not a finished ceramic object. Its walls and layers can be delicate, so handle it gently and let it dry fully before firing.

- Check the clay body and printer compatibility. Confirm that the clay is suitable for the printer and nozzle, and find the firing range and schedule specified for that body.
- Dry the piece completely. Place it in a safe, ventilated area and allow moisture to leave before firing. FabLab Arnhem’s Lutum guide says drying can take several days to over a week, depending on the size and complexity of the object.
- Fire within the clay body’s guidance. Use the material supplier’s schedule and the kiln maker’s operating directions. Do not choose a temperature based only on the word “ceramic” or on another clay body’s range.
- Glaze only if desired and appropriate. FabLab Arnhem describes bisque firing followed, optionally, by glazing and a further firing. The glaze and clay body must be compatible with the subsequent firing schedule.
The Lutum guide’s examples illustrate why the specific body matters: it lists stoneware at 1240–1300°C, porcelain at 1230–1270°C, and earthenware at 970–1055°C. Those are ranges for the bodies named in that guide, not universal firing recommendations.
Drying and shrinkage are not fixed values
FabLab Arnhem gives several days to over a week as a drying estimate for its workflow, with duration depending on object size and complexity. A different form, clay, or drying environment can change the time, so judge the piece by whether it is fully dry rather than treating a calendar estimate as a guarantee.

The same guide offers 10–15% shrinkage as a general tip for its printed-clay workflow. Actual dimensional change varies with clay body, geometry, drying, and firing. Account for shrinkage when designing, but do not assume one rate applies to every print.

Ceramic-filled filament
Some filaments contain ceramic particles in a plastic carrier or binder. The carrier has to be removed before firing, so the post-print process is not simply “dry the clay and bisque fire it.” Make’s discussion of the workflows it covers says, “In all these scenarios, a standard kiln will work for the firing stage.” That statement is not a universal schedule: the individual material still needs suitable temperatures and a controlled profile. Make also notes that these filaments are abrasive and calls for a hardened nozzle; check the particular filament maker’s requirements.

Ceramic resin or slurry
Technical ceramic resin and slurry processes have their own post-processing sequence. For Alumina 4N Resin, Formlabs instructs users to print, wash, remove excess solvent, dry completely, then debind and sinter. The manufacturer says this resin prints on Form 3/B/+ printers at 50-micron layers; that specification applies to this product and those printers. Follow Formlabs’ firing schedule exactly for the material.
3DCeram describes cleaning, debinding, and sintering for its ceramic stereolithography process. Its FAQ describes debinding to 600°C and sintering generally between 1300°C and 1700°C, while noting that material and part affect the parameters. These figures describe 3DCeram’s process; they are not a firing prescription for pottery clay or another supplier’s ceramic.

Can you use a regular kiln?
A kiln may be suitable for a firing stage if it can safely deliver the required temperature and controlled schedule for the exact material. Make’s standard-kiln statement concerns the particular workflows in its article, not every ceramic print or kiln. Technical ceramic processing can require debinding and sintering stages with product-specific instructions; confirm the equipment and profile required by the material supplier before proceeding.
Follow the kiln maker’s installation and operating directions as well as the material supplier’s firing schedule. The available guidance does not establish one kiln profile or safety protocol that applies to all ceramic-printing materials.

Choose the route for the object and equipment
There is no single best method for every ceramic project. Compare the feedstock, compatible printer and nozzle, post-print handling, and firing requirements before committing to a design.
- Choose direct clay extrusion when you want to print a clay body directly and can accommodate careful drying and the body’s firing schedule.
- Choose ceramic-filled filament only when the filament, printer hardware, debinding process, and firing requirements are specified for your setup.
- Choose resin or slurry processing when you are working with a technical ceramic system and can follow its complete cleaning, debinding, and sintering instructions.
For clay extrusion, select a suitable fine clay only after verifying its formulation, grain size, printer compatibility, and firing range. FabLab Arnhem’s Lutum guide provides examples for its setup. Kiln shelves or other kiln furniture may be needed depending on your kiln and firing arrangement, but they are setup-dependent rather than universal requirements.
