39 DIY Concrete Projects for Your Garden

Concrete can shape a garden in many ways: cast planters and leaf dishes, stepping stones and walkways, borders, fountains, and other landscape features. Here are 39 project ideas organized by what they do and how they are formed. The documented sources establish these project families and several methods, not a canonical, source-verified list of exactly 39 builds; the ideas below are a curated menu, and the more specific instructions are limited to the cited examples.

Planters and containers

For planting projects, choose a form that creates both the outside shape and a cavity for soil. The bucket method below is documented by Lowe’s; the other entries are variations to explore, not separately validated construction plans.

  1. Nested-bucket planter: Place a smaller bucket inside a larger one to form the cavity. Lowe’s guide uses cooking spray on the forms, weights the inner bucket, demolds after the set period, and drills a drainage hole. Follow the concrete mix’s package directions. The guide says most planters should cure at least 24–48 hours before demolding and several more days before planting; the mix instructions take precedence. See Lowe’s concrete planter guide.
  2. Small round pot formed with nested containers.
  3. Wide, shallow bowl planter.
  4. Tall cylindrical planter.
  5. Square or rectangular planter formed with box-shaped molds.
  6. Grouped pots in coordinating sizes.
  7. Herb planter with several planting pockets.
  8. Succulent planter with a broad, shallow cavity.
  9. Raised planter made from cast sections.
  10. Concrete sleeve or outer casing for a separate planting container.

Stepping stones and walkways

Use shallow forms for individual stones or a reusable mold when you want repeated shapes. QUIKRETE lists patios, walkways, and stepping stones made with WALKMAKER molds; Garden Therapy describes leaf-imprint stones cast in shallow plastic containers. Neither source establishes dimensions or structural specifications for a particular path, so match the design and mix to the intended use and follow the product label.

  1. Simple round stepping stones cast in shallow containers.
  2. Square stepping stones for a geometric path.
  3. Irregular stepping stones for a more organic layout.
  4. Leaf-imprint stepping stones.
  5. Stepping stones with a textured top made using a shaped form.
  6. A sequence of larger pavers across a lawn.
  7. Short walkway formed with repeated reusable mold sections.
  8. Garden route linking a patio to a planting bed.
  9. Small cast pavers arranged as a path through a border.

Leaf-imprint dishes and garden water features

A leaf can serve as the surface pattern for a shallow cast dish. Mother Earth Living’s birdbath instructions use fine concrete over an oiled leaf resting underside-up on a damp mound of grit or coarse sand. They advise setting the casting for four to five days, depending on its size, before removing the leaf and smoothing the edge. Larger baths are harder to lift without cracking. Treat that interval as specific to this project, not a universal cure time. Read the leaf-shaped concrete birdbath instructions.

  1. Leaf-shaped birdbath or shallow dish.
  2. Small leaf-imprint water dish for a garden feature.
  3. Pair of matching leaf dishes for a larger display.
  4. Shallow dish cast from a broad leaf for a decorative accent.
  5. Cast basin for a garden fountain, designed as part of a complete water-feature plan.
  6. Concrete pool or fountain element, using a project-specific design and materials.

QUIKRETE’s landscape library includes garden pools and fountains, but the library category alone does not specify how to build or seal a particular basin. Do not assume that the small leaf-dish method establishes requirements for larger water features.

More cast accents for a garden

Small castings can adapt the same basic idea—mix concrete for the chosen project, form it in a suitable mold, and let it set according to the material instructions—to a range of decorative uses. These are idea prompts rather than source-backed construction recipes.

Choose a project and form that fit the job

  • Start with the function: Decide whether you need a planter, path surface, decorative dish, border, or water feature. The project’s use determines the form and material questions to resolve.
  • Pick the forming method: Nested buckets make a planter cavity; reusable molds can repeat stepping-stone shapes; a damp sand mound and leaf can shape a shallow dish. These methods come from the Lowe’s planter guide, QUIKRETE’s project library, and Mother Earth Living’s birdbath instructions.
  • Consider scale and handling: Larger castings can be more difficult to lift; Mother Earth Living specifically cautions that larger leaf baths are trickier to remove without cracking.
  • Match the mix to the casting: Concrete mix is not one-size-fits-all. Lowe’s directs readers to follow the package directions for its planter example, while the birdbath tutorial calls for fine concrete. Follow the selected product’s label, including its handling guidance.
  • Plan drainage for planting: The Lowe’s planter example drills a drainage hole after demolding. A planter needs a way for excess water to escape.
  • Allow project-specific setting and curing: Lowe’s planter guide gives its own demolding and planting guidance; Mother Earth Living gives a separate four-to-five-day setting interval for its leaf casting. Do not transfer either timeline to a different mix or project without checking that product’s directions.

Materials for the documented examples

Nested-bucket planter

Lowe’s 2026 guide lists an 80-pound bag of concrete mix for its specific example, along with a mixing tub, 3- and 5-gallon buckets, cooking spray, duct tape, weights such as bricks or sand, gloves, a mask, and a drill with a masonry bit. The bag size and bucket sizes describe that guide’s project, not a universal quantity or required size for every planter. Lowe’s notes that retail availability and item details vary by market.

Leaf-imprint birdbath or dish

Mother Earth Living’s instructions call for fine concrete, grit or coarse sand, water, a leaf, oil, a paintbrush, a nail, a trowel, gloves, and a stone or file. The method forms a damp sand mound, places the oiled leaf underside-up, covers it evenly with concrete, and finishes the edge after the leaf is removed.

Project inspiration from the source libraries

QUIKRETE describes its landscape projects as a way to “Beautify and enhance your yard or garden with QUIKRETE® cement and concrete products.” Its current project library covers cast concrete projects, planters, pools and fountains, and patios, walkways and stepping stones. Garden Therapy also illustrates concrete planters and leaf-imprint stepping stones. These libraries are useful for browsing project families; check the specific project and product instructions before choosing a material or method.
