For most cabinet grease, start with warm water and a little mild dish soap—not a strong degreaser. Put the suds on a soft cloth, wipe gently, rinse with a separate cloth dampened with clear water, and dry promptly. The safest method depends on the cabinet material and finish, so check the maker’s care instructions and test cleaners on a hidden spot first.
Before you clean: protect the cabinet finish
Cabinet doors may be painted, clear-coated, or made from other materials with different care requirements. When you know the manufacturer or finish, follow its cleaning instructions. Otherwise, use the least aggressive method first and test it in an inconspicuous area.
- Use a soft cloth and keep it damp rather than wet; do not saturate doors, edges, seams, or joints.
- Work in a small area, then rinse away cleaner residue with a separate cloth dampened in clean water.
- Dry the surface with an absorbent cloth instead of leaving it to air-dry.
- Avoid abrasive scrubbing and unverified mixtures on delicate or glossy finishes.
How to get grease off kitchen cabinets: four methods
1. Warm water and mild dish soap for routine grease
Mix a small amount of mild dishwashing detergent into warm water and make suds. Apply the suds to a soft cloth rather than pouring or spraying cleaner directly onto the cabinet. Wipe gently, rinse with another cloth dampened with clear water, and dry with an absorbent cloth. 2. A careful sudsy-water pass for painted or polyurethaned wood
For painted or polyurethane-coated wood, UGA advises wiping with a cloth dipped in warm sudsy water, then rinsing and drying. Work promptly and keep water from standing on the surface. 3. A wood-specific cleaner when the label allows it
If the cabinets are wood and the finish is compatible, a commercial cleaner made for wood or a wood-cleaning wax may be an option. Follow the product label and cabinet maker’s instructions; a wood cleaner is not automatically suitable for every coating or cabinet construction. UGA lists these as wood-cabinet options in its guidance on grease stains.
4. For stubborn buildup, repeat gently before escalating
If grease remains, try another pass with mild suds rather than scrubbing harder. UGA’s stain guidance mentions petroleum solvent for heavy grease buildup on wood, but this is a last resort—not a default for unknown cabinets. Use it only if the cabinet finish and product instructions permit it, test a hidden area first, and observe the product’s ventilation, flammability, and protective-equipment warnings. If you cannot confirm compatibility, ask the cabinet maker or a finish professional before using a solvent.

Why vinegar and baking soda are not automatic shortcuts
Vinegar may cut grease in general cleaning, but that does not establish that it is safe for every cabinet finish. Oregon Metro also identifies baking soda as mildly abrasive, so rubbing it on a delicate or glossy surface can be a poor bet without finish-specific guidance.
