If you’re short of space, want to spend less, or would rather make something that suits your home than bring in a traditional tree, there are plenty of festive alternatives. Choose by footprint first: a wall display or hanging tree keeps the floor clear, a tabletop design suits a small room, and a freestanding build can become a reusable focal point. The ideas below range from quick arrangements using things you already own to more involved craft and woodworking projects.

Wall-mounted and hanging trees for small rooms

These options use a wall or ceiling instead of a broad floor footprint. Before installing anything, check the surface, the fastener’s instructions and load rating, and whether the display will be within reach of children or pets.

1. Removable-hook garland tree

Arrange garland in a tree outline and secure it with removable adhesive hooks. It is an adaptable choice for a temporary display; follow the hook maker’s instructions and check that the surface is compatible. Martha Stewart describes removable hooks as a way to make a wall display easier to take down without damaging paint (Martha Stewart).

2. Reusable felt wall hanging

Cut or sew felt into a tree shape, then add felt ornaments or pockets. It folds flat for storage and can be hung again next year. Keep small detachable decorations away from young children and pets.

4. Pegboard tree

Use a pegboard as a vertical tree display, adding hooks and ornaments in a triangular arrangement. It can be customized without taking up floor space; the board and its wall fixings need to support the combined weight.

5. Painted wall triangle

Arrange paper shapes, lightweight ornaments, or other small objects in a tree outline. Put the display out of pets’ reach, and use a suitable removable fixing if you want to take it down after the holidays.

8. Suspended Christmas-tree mobile

Hang a mobile made from graduated branches, shapes, or lightweight ornaments. It leaves the floor open, but ceiling attachment requires particular care: use a suitable fixing for the ceiling and the total load, and position the mobile clear of people, doors, and lights.

Tabletop trees and miniature displays

A small tree can still read as a focal point when it is placed where people naturally gather. These projects suit shelves, side tables, and dining tables, though delicate pieces may need a protected spot.

9. Origami tree

Fold paper into a tree form for a shelf or table. Use decorative paper you already have for an inexpensive version, or make several small trees for a miniature scene.

11. Pipe-cleaner miniature tree

Shape pipe cleaners around a small central support to create a tiny tree. It is a straightforward craft for a small display; keep the materials and finished piece away from children or pets who might pull off small parts.

12. Bottlebrush-tree grouping

Arrange bottlebrush trees of different sizes as a little forest on a mantel or table. Grouping several miniatures gives more visual presence than one alone, while keeping the display compact.

13. Mini paper trees

Cut and fold paper into small tree shapes by hand or with a Cricut machine. Reuse book pages or music paper for a textured look, provided the paper is yours to repurpose.

Needle-felt wool into a small tree for a soft, sculptural centerpiece. It takes more patience and care than a folded-paper version; use the appropriate tools safely and keep them away from children.

15. Moss tree centerpiece

Shape moss into a small tree for a natural-looking table display. Place it where it will not be knocked over, and keep it away from flames and hot lights.

16. Succulent tree centerpiece

Natural materials and household finds

Branches, books, boxes, and leftover craft materials can make a distinctive display without requiring a conventional tree. Use materials that are stable and in good condition, and avoid adding lights where they could heat or ignite paper, fabric, or dry foliage.

17. Book-stack tree

Stack books from a broad base to a single book at the top to suggest a tree silhouette. Homes & Gardens reports that Buchanan Studio’s creative director Angus Buchanan used stacked books for a Christmas “tree” and describes the broad-base-to-single-book arrangement (Homes & Gardens). Keep the stack low and stable, particularly where children or pets may reach it.

18. Bare-branch or log tree

Arrange branches or logs in graduated lengths against a wall or in a secure frame. Lucy Searle of Homes & Gardens praises the raw simplicity of a tree made from bare logs (Homes & Gardens). Choose sound, stable pieces and keep them clear of flames and hot bulbs.

19. Pine-cone tree

Build a cone-shaped arrangement from pine cones, either as a tabletop piece or a larger display. A stable base helps prevent it toppling; natural materials should be kept away from open flames and heat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

20. Paper tree from old books or music paper

Fold, cut, or layer pages into a tree form. This gives damaged or unwanted paper a second use, but the result is combustible, so avoid candles and keep any lights well clear.

21. Giant cardboard trees

Use cardboard boxes to cut and assemble oversized flat or freestanding tree shapes. It is a way to repurpose packaging and can scale to a large room, but cardboard needs a stable base and should be kept away from flames and hot lights.

22. Small village of mini trees

Collect or make small trees in varied shapes and finishes, then group them into a compact village. This is useful when one larger tree would overwhelm a shelf or mantel.

Crafted trees from yarn, fabric, and paper

These projects let you coordinate colors and textures with a room. Some are quick, while sewing and other detailed work take more time; if you want to reuse the result, plan how it will be stored before you start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

23. Pom-pom tree from leftover yarn

Make pom-poms from yarn scraps and arrange them in a tree shape on a backing or wall. It turns leftover material into soft, colorful decor; keep the display away from heat sources.

Vitalismo 3FT Artificial Cedar Trees Set of 2 for Outdoor Front Porch
  • Outdoor UV Resistance: Made with UV-resistant PE foliage, these artificial cedar trees are designed for outdoor use and help maintain an evergreen look through the seasons. Ideal for front porch, patio, entryway and other outdoor spaces without the upkeep of live plants.
  • Realistic PE Foliage: Natural green tones, layered PE leaves and fresh new-bud tips recreate the look of healthy cedar growth for a more lifelike appearance. Made with odor-free PE foliage, these faux cedar topiary trees are a practical choice for families with kids and pets.
  • Fuller Adjustable Shape: Flexible branches let you shape each artificial topiary tree into a fuller, natural cedar form after unpacking. For the best result, keep branches within about 45 degrees from the trunk; spreading them toward 90 degrees can create larger gaps and make the tree appear sparse.
  • 3 ft Set of 2: Includes two artificial cedar trees, each measuring 3 ft tall and approximately 17.72 inches wide after proper shaping. For a more finished look and added stability, place the included pots inside larger decorative planters or secure them in soil.
  • Easy Year-Round Care: No watering, pruning or daily maintenance needed. Simply wipe the foliage with a soft damp cloth when needed. These faux outdoor plants are ideal for busy families, professionals, pet owners and anyone who wants year-round greenery without regular plant care.

24. Yarn-wrapped cone trees

Wrap yarn around cone-shaped forms for simple tabletop trees. Use leftover yarn for a low-cost version, or vary the colors for a coordinated group.

25. Macramé tree

Knot cord into a hanging tree design. It is a more involved fiber project than a quick paper craft, but the finished piece stores flat and keeps the floor clear.

26. Fabric tree with sequins

Cut or sew fabric into a tree shape and decorate it with sequins. Fabric scraps can reduce material costs, though sewing and small embellishments add effort; keep it away from candles and hot bulbs.

27. Fleece cone trees

Wrap or shape fleece around cones to make soft, lightweight tabletop trees. Use fabric scraps where possible and store the finished pieces somewhere they will not be crushed.

28. Honeycomb-paper tree

Use honeycomb paper to create a dimensional tree suited to a small room. It offers more volume than a flat wall shape without the footprint of a full-size tree; paper is combustible, so leave it unlit or keep lights well away.

29. Paper pom-poms on a tomato cage

Attach paper pom-poms to a tomato cage to create a tall, airy form. This makes use of a garden item in a new way, but secure the cage so it cannot tip and keep paper clear of heat and flame.

30. Glitter tree

Cover a simple tree form with glitter using craft supplies you have on hand. Protect the work area from loose glitter, and choose a stable base if the tree will stand on a table or floor.

31. Glossy marbled tree

Use paint-pouring techniques to create a marbled finish on a tree form. The result can look polished, but paint work needs preparation and drying space; follow the product instructions for the paints and coating.

Reusable builds and bold alternatives

Choose a build if you want a freestanding focal point or a design to bring out again. These projects call for more attention to stability, tools, and storage than a simple wall arrangement.

33. Pallet-wood tree

Cut or arrange pallet wood into a tree silhouette. A sturdy wooden design can be reused, but use sound wood, appropriate tools, and a stable support; sand or otherwise address rough edges before bringing it indoors.

34. Minimalist wooden tree

Build a simple geometric tree from wood for a restrained look. This option requires tools and DIY know-how, but a well-made design can be reused and stored for future seasons.

35. Plywood tree with tape and paint

Paint a tree shape on plywood, using tape to define clean edges. The flat panel can be stored against a wall when the season ends; choose a stable way to stand or mount it.

36. Disco-ball tree

Arrange disco balls in a tree-shaped grouping for a reflective, high-impact focal point. Secure each piece so it cannot roll or fall, especially if the display is elevated.

37. Balloon tree on a garden trellis

Attach balloons to a trellis in a triangular arrangement. It can make a dramatic temporary display, but it is not a durable reusable build; keep it clear of heat and avoid putting it where popping balloons could startle people or pets.

How to choose the right alternative

  • For the smallest floor footprint: choose a wall-hanging, removable-hook garland, painted triangle, or pegboard. A mobile also clears the floor, but needs a secure overhead fixing.
  • For a shelf or table: try origami, bottlebrush trees, a book-stack arrangement, a pine-cone tree, or a small village of mini trees.
  • For a low-cost project: start with books, boxes, fabric or yarn scraps, branches, or ornaments you already own. A project may still require time, fixings, or tools even when its main materials are free.
  • For a reusable decoration: a felt wall hanging folds away, while sturdy wooden designs can be stored and brought back out. A painted wall triangle is the more permanent choice.
  • For minimal tools and effort: arrange existing objects, fold paper, or group mini trees. Sewing, needle felting, and woodworking are more demanding options.
  • For a display that will hold ornaments: plan the weight and attachment points before building. Decorative ideas are not automatically stable or safe to climb, lean on, or hang heavy items from.

Lighting and installation safety

An alternative tree is not automatically fireproof. The U.S. Fire Administration says that NFPA attributes almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires to electrical problems; the page does not state a year for that figure (U.S. Fire Administration, “Holiday Fire Safety”).

  • London Fire Brigade advises keeping lights away from materials that burn easily, including paper and fabric, choosing LED lights, switching lights off when leaving home or going to sleep, and checking wires and cords. Use lights only in the indoor or outdoor setting for which they are intended (London Fire Brigade, “Christmas trees: avoid a festive fire hazard”).
  • Keep candles and other open flames away from paper, fabric, foliage, cardboard, and wooden displays.
  • For wall-mounted projects, follow the fixing manufacturer’s instructions, confirm surface compatibility, and do not exceed the stated load rating.
  • For freestanding builds, check stability on the actual floor or surface where the tree will stand, and keep it out of walkways and door swings.

Sources for the project ideas

The 32 core formats in this roundup are drawn from Gathered’s October 14, 2025 feature, “32 alternatives to traditional Christmas trees” (Gathered). Additional wall-display and paper-craft examples are covered by Martha Stewart; the book-stack, bare-log, and found-object wall-display examples are covered by Homes & Gardens.
