You can turn reclaimed pallets into planters, garden storage, compost enclosures, trellises, fences, and simple outdoor furniture. The right project depends on your space and whether you can use an intact pallet or need to dismantle it. Before building, inspect its treatment mark and condition: an “HT” mark records heat treatment, but it does not establish how the pallet was used afterward. Avoid pallets marked “MB,” and choose known, suitable materials for edible crops.
Choose a project that fits your space and materials
An intact pallet can work as the starting point for a vertical display, rack, or simple enclosure. Projects that need shelves, planter boxes, table legs, or a specific frame usually require dismantling and cutting boards. Wall-mounted and freestanding projects need secure support; planters also need a way for water to drain. The ideas below are concepts, not load-tested plans: adapt construction and fasteners to the intended use, and do not assume a raw pallet is rated for seating, carts, or heavy loads.
Planting and growing projects
1. Vertical herb garden
Use an intact pallet as a frame for herb containers or planting pockets, placing it where plants get suitable light and can be watered without waterlogging. The pallet can stay intact; add containers rather than filling its openings with soil. Materials: pallet, suitable pots or planting pockets, fasteners, and a stable support or mounting surface.
2. Wall-mounted flower planter
Attach planter boxes to an intact pallet or a board-built panel, then secure the assembly to a suitable wall or fence so it cannot tip or fall. Materials: pallet or boards, planter boxes, fasteners, and mounting hardware suited to the support.

Seating and gathering projects
31. Garden bench or compact lounge
Stack and secure pallets for a simple bench concept, then check carefully for protruding nails or staples and sand rough edges. A stacked-pallet idea is not the same as load-tested furniture; design and secure the structure for its intended use. Materials: pallets, secure fasteners, and tools and protective equipment for inspection and finishing.
Check pallet safety before building
Read the treatment mark, but do not assume it tells the whole story
Penn State Extension says, “You should never use pallets with an MB stamp for any home project, nor should they be burned.” Avoid an MB-marked pallet. An HT stamp indicates heat treatment, a pest-control process, but it does not establish the pallet’s exposure history after treatment. University of Maryland Extension describes heat treatment for pallets manufactured in Canada or the United States as a minimum core temperature of 56°C (132°F) for softwoods and 60°C (140°F) for hardwoods, maintained for at least 30 minutes in a kiln. Those figures describe the treatment process, not every aspect of a used pallet’s later history. See University of Maryland Extension’s pallet-planting guidance and Penn State Extension’s pallet safety guidance.
Choose suitable wood for food crops
For vegetables and other edible crops, prefer material with a known, suitable history. A liner may reduce soil contact with wood, but it does not make unknown or contaminated pallet wood safe. If you use a liner, provide drainage rather than trapping excess water. University of Maryland Extension discusses materials for raised beds in its raised-bed materials guidance; North Carolina State Extension also addresses treated wood in the context of vegetable gardening.
Inspect and dismantle carefully
Look over the pallet for damage, contamination, and protruding nails or staples before using it. Dismantling can cause injuries; wear eye protection and a mask when sawing or sanding to reduce exposure to wood dust, and use tools appropriately. Heat-treated wood can be hard and brittle: Auburn University’s planter tutorial recommends drilling pilot holes before driving screws to help prevent splitting. See Auburn University’s pallet planter instructions.

Secure structures for their real use
Anchor wall-mounted displays and freestanding structures against tipping, and use construction suited to the intended load. The extension and project sources cited here do not establish universal dimensions, load ratings, build times, costs, or service life for these ideas; those depend on the specific design, materials, and site.
