The best candidates are tools you use often, that earn their footprint by doing a useful job well, and that are manageable to clean and store. This list is a menu, not a must-buy checklist: choose items that match your cooking habits, household size, and available space, and skip anything that duplicates a tool you already own.
How to decide what earns a spot
Frequency matters more than novelty. The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension advises, “Consider cost and space when thinking about buying or keeping small kitchen appliances and tools.” It also recommends keeping frequently used tools handy and considering cleaning, maintenance, and storage. Consumer Reports’ small-kitchen guidance similarly favors tools that can do double or triple duty over rarely used one-task gadgets.
- Count the jobs you will actually use. A multifunction tool earns its keep only when its functions fit your routine.
- Include cleanup in the footprint. A bulky appliance with several parts can take more time and storage than its counter dimensions suggest.
- Match capacity to your household. A tool that is awkwardly large or too small for your typical meals may go unused.
- Account for weight and storage. Heavy cookware or an appliance kept in a difficult-to-reach cabinet is less convenient in practice.
- Give frequent-use appliances priority. Store smaller tools in a drawer or utensil crock unless you reach for them regularly.
Consumer Reports’ cookware guidance points to material, storage, weight, and actual use as relevant considerations; a bigger cookware set is not automatically better. No particular product model or price is established here, and this is not a tested ranking.
Everyday prep tools
These compact basics are often easier to keep in a drawer than to dedicate counter space to. Their value depends on the tasks you do and the tools you already have.

26. Food processor

27. Hand mixer
A hand mixer is a compact alternative to a stand mixer for cooks who often beat or whip ingredients but do not need a larger machine. If baking is occasional, a whisk may be enough.
28. Countertop air fryer
An air fryer can suit households that use it frequently and have room to leave it accessible. The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension discusses air fryers as a category to consider; whether one merits counter space depends on your cooking pattern, cleaning tolerance, and overlap with your oven.

30. Rice cooker
A rice cooker is most useful for households that make rice often and value a dedicated, repeatable cooking process. If rice is an occasional side, a stovetop pot may already meet the need.
When specialty appliances are worth considering
Some useful tools are missing from the 30-item list because they serve narrower routines. The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension also covers sous-vide devices, vacuum sealers, smokers, grills, and cast iron. These can be worthwhile when they support cooking or storage habits you already have, but their presence in a kitchen guide does not make them essentials.
- Consider a specialty appliance when you can name the recurring task it solves and expect to use it enough to justify its cost, space, cleaning, and maintenance.
- Store it instead of displaying it if it is useful but used only occasionally.
- Skip it if it duplicates a tool you use comfortably or requires more cleanup and storage than the task warrants.
Which gadgets should stay off the counter?
Counter space is limited, so reserve it for appliances that make frequent tasks easier. A tool is a poor countertop resident when it is rarely used, duplicates equipment you already own, or is inconvenient to clean and maintain. Consumer Reports’ efficient-kitchen guidance notes that regularly used appliances may live on the counter, while a garlic tool is an optional convenience rather than a necessity.
Think of “worth it” as a personal test rather than a universal ranking: can you identify the task, the likely frequency, and the storage and cleanup you are willing to accept? If not, put the gadget away—or leave it off the shopping list.
