The best small backyard pool is the one sized for what you will actually do in it. A stock-tank pool or plunge pool can make a compact place to cool off and float; a narrow lap lane or swim spa is a better choice for swimming, while a cocktail pool puts more emphasis on sitting and socializing. These 30 ideas combine pool types with layout and finish choices, so you can match the design to your yard and your plans.
Choose the pool for how you want to use it
Before choosing a shape or finish, decide whether the priority is cooling off, lounging, children’s splash play, socializing, or swimming. A small plunge pool is not a substitute for a lap pool. For compact layouts, a rectangle is often a practical starting point: straight edges use the footprint efficiently and can leave usable deck space along the sides. That is a design recommendation, not a universal engineering rule.
- For cooling off and floating: consider a plunge pool, stock-tank pool, or compact above-ground pool.
- For lounging and conversation: look at a cocktail pool, spool, or a design with a broad bench or sun ledge.
- For swimming: investigate a narrow lap lane or swim spa, and confirm its dimensions and installation needs against the actual site.
- For children’s play: prioritize supervision, safe access, and barriers that meet local requirements; a shallow pool still carries drowning and water-quality risks.
30 small backyard pool ideas
Simple, seasonal, and DIY options
- Set a stock-tank pool on a level pad. A repurposed livestock tank can suit cooling off and sitting in a small yard. Stock Tank Pool Products says its tanks are not factory-manufactured or certified swimming pools; its conversion approach includes circulation and filtration, water testing, and treatment. Follow the vendor’s instructions and local rules.
- Use an 8-foot galvanized stock tank for a compact gathering spot. Stock Tank Pool Products’ FAQ says its 8-foot tank holds about 700 gallons at 2 feet deep and fits two to three adults. Those are vendor figures for that configuration, not a universal capacity or safe-use guarantee.
- Choose a plastic stock tank if metal is not the right fit. Stock Tank Pool Products describes both steel and plastic tank options. Compare the specific tank and equipment guidance before committing; the vendor cautions that these are not certified swimming pools.
- Frame a seasonal above-ground pool with a simple deck. A small platform or landing can make entry easier and give the pool a more intentional place in the yard. Keep access to the pump and filter clear.
- Screen the pool with planting. Use planters or landscaping to soften the view without blocking the required barrier, gate, equipment access, or sightlines for supervision.
- Add low-glare evening lighting. Light the route, steps, and surrounding deck so the area is easier to navigate; electrical installation near water needs to comply with applicable codes.
Above-ground and semi-inground structures
- Install a compact above-ground pool as a defined yard zone. Position it where the remaining lawn, path, and equipment area still work together rather than treating the pool’s water footprint as the whole project.
- Partially recess an above-ground pool. A semi-inground arrangement can reduce the visual height, but feasibility depends on the pool design, site, drainage, and installation requirements.
- Use a modular panel pool where installation flexibility matters. Cocktail Pools lists 8 × 16-foot, 10 × 20-foot, and 12 × 24-foot models and describes above-ground, in-ground, and semi-inground installation options. These are manufacturer-listed sizes and installation approaches; confirm current specifications and suitability with the manufacturer or installer.
- Make the long side the social side. Put the main seating or deck along one long edge of a rectangular pool, preserving a clear path at the other edge.
- Fit a narrow pool beside the house. A side-yard layout can turn a long, underused strip into a cooling-off area, provided there is room for access, circulation, equipment, and required setbacks.
- Use a corner location to preserve open yard. Placing a compact pool at the edge of the usable yard can keep a central patch available for play or seating. Check that the corner does not conflict with access or safety requirements.
Plunge pools and compact social pools
- Build an 8 × 16-foot plunge pool. PoolBuff’s small-pool guide gives this as an example footprint for a small plunge pool. Treat it as an example, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that the pool fits a particular property.
- Choose a precast concrete plunge shell. Plungie lists its Original at 4,600 mm external length, 2,500 mm external width, 1,690 mm external height, 14,000 litres, and 8,600 kg dry weight. The manufacturer says the purchaser arranges installation through a local builder, pool builder, or structural landscaper, depending on location. The shell’s weight makes delivery route and placement planning essential.
- Make the pool a cocktail-style social space. Cocktail pools emphasize seating and social use rather than swimming laps. Alps Manufacturing lists an 8 × 15-foot model with five hydrotherapy jets built into a sun bench, two returns, and two skimmers; it says it does not supply or install tiles. Confirm current product details and installation scope directly with the manufacturer.
- Add a built-in bench across one end. A bench can create a place to sit and helps distinguish a lounging pool from a swim-focused layout. Keep the remaining water area appropriate for the intended use.
- Design a broad sun ledge. A shallow ledge supports sitting or lounging at the water’s edge. Ask the designer how its depth and dimensions affect usable water area and circulation.
- Use an L-shaped bench to define a conversation corner. This can concentrate seating in one part of the pool while leaving a more open section for floating.
- Pair a small pool with a compact deck. A narrow deck on one side can provide space for towels and chairs without dedicating the whole yard to paving.
- Set the pool beside a privacy screen. A screen or carefully placed planting can create a more secluded lounging zone, but should not interfere with required barriers, gates, maintenance, or adult supervision.
- Use a dark or natural-looking finish for a restrained look. Coordinate the pool finish with nearby paving and planting, and check how the chosen material affects maintenance and water appearance with the builder.
- Keep the pool and patio on one level where practical. A simple transition can make a compact area feel connected, subject to drainage, access, and site conditions.
Swim-oriented and spa-style designs
- Install a narrow lap lane. A long, slim pool is better suited to purposeful swimming than a compact round plunge pool. Confirm that the usable swimming length—not just the overall footprint—fits the yard.
- Consider a swim spa. A swim spa is a distinct option for swimming-oriented use in a compact format. Compare its footprint, equipment, delivery route, and installation requirements with a conventional pool before deciding.
- Choose a spool for mixed spa and pool use. A spool combines ideas associated with a small pool and spa. Check the actual dimensions and features of a specific model rather than assuming the category guarantees a certain layout.
- Use a rectangular shell to maximize usable length. Where swimming is the priority, a straightforward rectangle may provide more continuous swimming space than a shape with multiple curves or corners.
- Place steps at one end. End steps can preserve a more continuous lane along the length of the pool; the designer should account for the space they occupy.
- Separate the pool from the main seating area with a path. A clear route can improve circulation around the water and reduce conflicts between swimmers and people using chairs or tables.
- Integrate spa jets into a seating zone. If relaxation is more important than lap swimming, a bench with jets can make the pool more useful for sitting. Verify the feature set and servicing needs for the selected model.
- Use a swim spa where a conventional excavation is impractical. A swim spa may be worth investigating when a long pool footprint or excavation route is difficult, but delivery access and the equipment location still need to be checked.
Finishing and planting ideas
- Unify the pool with paving, planting, and lighting. Repeat a small number of materials and colors around the water, leave access to equipment, and light steps and paths appropriately. The result should support safe movement and maintenance as well as appearance.
Plan the whole site, not only the water footprint
A pool that fits on a sketch may not fit the property once delivery, excavation, equipment, and safety requirements are considered. Before choosing a type or requesting a final design, measure and verify the constraints that can change the project.
- Access: measure gates, paths, overhead clearance, and any turns needed to deliver a shell, panels, tank, or equipment. Ask the supplier or installer what access and lifting arrangements the chosen option requires.
- Excavation and placement: establish whether machinery can reach the proposed location and whether soil, drainage, or existing structures affect the work.
- Setbacks and barriers: check property-line setbacks, barrier and gate rules, and permit requirements with the local building department. These vary by jurisdiction; there is no single setback or barrier dimension that applies everywhere.
- Equipment space: allow room for pumps, filters, service access, and any other equipment specified for the pool.
- Installation responsibilities: confirm who supplies transport, lifting, installation, connections, and finishing. For Plungie Original, the manufacturer lists local installation as the purchaser’s responsibility.
Understand equipment, water care, and safety
Even a small pool needs a plan for circulation, water treatment, and safe access. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Swimming and other recreational water activities come with health and safety risks, like swimming-related illnesses and drowning.” Its May 14, 2024 guidance identifies drowning as the leading cause of death for children aged 1–4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children aged 5–14. The CDC’s Guidelines for Healthy and Safe Swimming explain these risks.
