The three practical ways to hang an American flag on a wall are to fasten it flat, mount it on a projecting pole and wall bracket, or add clip-on grommets where the flag needs more attachment points. Whichever method you choose, the Union (the blue field) belongs at the top and on the flag’s own right—your left when you face it.
Get the orientation right first
Under the U.S. Flag Code, when the flag is displayed horizontally or vertically against a wall, “the union should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left.” The flag’s own right means the right-hand side from the flag’s perspective, so a person looking at it sees the Union on the left.

This rule applies to both a flat wall display and a flag hung from a wall-mounted pole. Do not mirror the Union to the viewer’s right. The Code also says that a flag displayed other than from a staff should be displayed flat or suspended so that it falls free. That guidance describes the intended presentation; it does not prescribe a particular nail, screw, hook or adhesive.

Choose the method that fits your flag and wall

Product kits vary. A wall-mount set may include a pole, bracket and attachment rings, while another may omit one or more of those parts. For example, the Uline wall-mount listing states that mounting screws are not included. Confirm the contents and dimensions before drilling.

1. Fasten the flag flat to the wall
A flat display keeps the flag close to the surface and usually requires the least hardware. It works when the flag already has grommets, tabs, a sleeve or another construction that can be attached without bunching the fabric.
How to install it
- Hold the flag in its final position and orient it with the Union at the top and on the viewer’s left.
- Mark the locations of the flag’s existing grommets or other attachment points. Keep the fabric supported so the weight is not concentrated at one corner.
- Select fasteners appropriate for the actual wall surface. Masonry, wood, drywall and other substrates require different installation methods; there is no single fastener or adhesive that is suitable for every wall and flag size.
- Install the fasteners, then attach the flag without twisting the header or pulling the fabric tight enough to deform it.
- Check from straight on that the flag hangs flat or falls free, with the Union still in the required position.
Do not force a flag into a flat mounting pattern its construction cannot support. If it has attachment points on only one side, use a different method or add suitable attachment points.

2. Mount a pole on a wall bracket
A bracket-and-pole display projects the flag from the wall and creates a traditional staff-style presentation. Purpose-made indoor brackets range from fixed-angle supports to adjustable brackets; some kits combine the bracket, pole and flag attachment rings.

How to install it
- Measure the pole and inspect the flag’s sleeve, rings or clips. Confirm that the pole diameter, length and attachment hardware are compatible.
- Position the bracket so the flag can hang without striking nearby trim, doors, lights or other obstructions. Set the flag’s orientation before marking the bracket location.
- Identify the wall material and any framing or masonry behind it. Use fasteners rated for that surface and for the combined load of the bracket, pole and flag.
- Secure the bracket according to its instructions. Do not assume screws or anchors are included simply because the product is sold as a kit.
- Attach the flag to the pole, place the pole in the bracket and verify that the Union is uppermost and on the viewer’s left.
This approach needs more clearance and installation planning than a flat display. An adjustable bracket can help with the projection angle, but adjustment does not remove the need to match the hardware to the wall and flag.

3. Add clip-on grommets for missing attachment points
Some flags have grommets along only one edge, leaving no convenient attachment point at a fly corner. Clip-on grommets—also called add-a-grommets by some suppliers—can provide additional points for a wall or fence display. They are an optional solution for compatible flag construction, not a requirement of the Flag Code.
How to use them
- Check the flag’s fabric, header and existing grommets to identify where an added point is needed.
- Choose clips designed for the flag material and the intended load. Follow the accessory maker’s placement and installation directions.
- Install the added grommet without cutting or crushing the fabric, and space it so the flag is supported rather than hanging from a single stressed corner.
- Attach the flag using a flat-wall fastener or a compatible pole-and-bracket system.
- Recheck the orientation: the Union remains at the top and on the viewer’s left when you face the flag.
Because clip-on grommets are a supplier-described accessory, inspect the finished display for sagging, pulled fabric or movement and use another mounting method if the clips do not hold the flag evenly.

Hardware and wall checks before you drill
- Flag construction: Locate every existing grommet, tab, sleeve, ring and clip. The attachment pattern determines which method is practical.
- Wall material: Select anchors or screws for the real substrate rather than relying on a universal fastener recommendation.
- Load and leverage: A projecting pole puts more leverage on a bracket than a flat flag puts on its attachment points.
- Clearance: Leave room for the flag to fall free and avoid contact with doors, walkways, heat sources and sharp edges.
- Kit contents: Verify whether the package includes the pole, bracket, rings, clips, anchors and screws. Components differ by product.
- Placement: For an exterior wall, account for weather exposure and the condition of the masonry, siding or framing before installation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Putting the Union on the viewer’s right because the flag was turned around during installation.
- Assuming a vertical display changes the orientation rule; it does not.
- Using a pole whose diameter does not fit the bracket or the flag’s sleeve and rings.
- Installing a heavy projecting display with fasteners unsuitable for the wall.
- Assuming a wall-mount kit includes mounting screws or anchors.
- Adding grommets to a delicate flag without checking whether the clips suit its fabric.
