3 Cool Plants to Make Your Landscape Stand Out

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a landscape with standout color, texture, and form, consider a Japanese maple, an ornamental grass suited to your region, or an agave for a sunny, dry site. These are an illustrative trio, not a confirmed original list for this title, and none is right for every property. Match your choice to local climate, sunlight, drainage, available space, and local invasive-plant rules before planting.

Compare the three plants by site and effect

Plant Best-fit conditions Visual interest Size, spread, and local checks
Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) Choose a cultivar and location suited to the property’s light, soil, and climate; check local planting guidance. Varied foliage colors, layered branching, fall color, and winter branch interest. UNH Extension gives a broad height range of 6 to 25 feet across cultivated varieties. Confirm the selected cultivar’s mature size and allow room for it to develop. UNH Extension planting and care guidance.
Ornamental grass Conditions vary by species; select for the site’s light and moisture, and check regional guidance. Fine or bold texture and structure that can complement shrubs and other planting beds. Spread and self-seeding vary. The University of Maryland Extension advises against invasive ornamental grasses and notes that some species are regulated in Maryland. Check current local rules before choosing a species. University of Maryland Extension guidance.
Agave (Agave spp.) A possible fit for a sunny, dry, well-drained site; suitability depends on species and local climate. Sculptural succulent form that can make a strong focal point. Do not assume a given species suits cold conditions or poorly drained soil. UC IPM describes agave and yucca as suited to well-drained soil with little water; they prefer mostly full sun but tolerate partial shade. UC IPM agave guidance.

1. Japanese maple for layered foliage and seasonal color

A Japanese maple can work as a specimen tree or large shrub, with cultivated forms offering substantial variation in foliage and branching. UNH Extension describes fall color and winter branch interest, so its contribution can extend beyond the growing season.

Space is an important part of the decision: UNH Extension’s 6-to-25-foot height range spans cultivated varieties, not a promise about any one plant. Check the chosen cultivar’s expected mature size and whether the location’s conditions suit it. For planting and care considerations, see UNH Extension’s Japanese maple Q&A.

2. Ornamental grass for texture and structure

“Ornamental grass” describes a broad group rather than a single plant with one set of growing requirements. Species differ in the light and site conditions they suit, as well as how widely they spread and whether they self-seed. Those differences affect both the look of a planting and the amount of control it may need.

Choose a species only after checking current regional guidance. The University of Maryland Extension recommends avoiding invasive ornamental grasses and notes that some are regulated in Maryland; that Maryland-specific information does not establish the rules elsewhere. Its ornamental and native grasses guidance is a useful starting point, followed by a check with the relevant local authority or extension service.

3. Agave for a sunny, dry focal point

Agave’s sculptural shape can bring a distinct focal point to a landscape where its site needs are met. UC IPM says agave and yucca suit well-drained soil with little water. They prefer mostly full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

Choose for the actual planting site

A striking plant still has to work where it will grow. Iowa State Extension notes that most landscape plants prefer moist, well-drained soil in full sun, while its difficult-site guide identifies alternatives for dry or wet soil, partial shade, and alkaline soil. Treat that as general guidance rather than a universal rule: match the plant to the actual conditions in your yard.
