Cellular shades are a strong starting point when insulation and glare control matter; blackout curtains or shades may suit sleepers who want less incoming light, provided the exact product and installation limit gaps. No treatment is automatically blackout or best for every bedroom, so compare opacity, fit, operation, upkeep, and climate—not appearance alone.
How to choose a bedroom window treatment
Start with the problem you want to solve, then check the actual product and window. Light control and privacy are related but separate: a treatment can screen views while still letting daylight through. For darkness, confirm the fabric’s opacity and how the treatment covers the sides and top of the opening. For privacy, consider coverage and view-through in the position you will use it.

- For darkness: look for verified opacity and consider mounting and edge gaps; do not assume a product called a shade or curtain is blackout.
- For privacy: check how much the fabric or slats obscure views when the treatment is both open and closed.
- For daylight and glare: compare filtering and adjustability, taking window orientation into account.
- For thermal comfort: compare construction, fit, climate, and how you will operate the treatment.
- For installation: verify inside- or outside-mount dimensions, window shape, hardware, and any landlord restrictions.
- For appearance and care: check the cleaning method, durability, material, and style.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) identifies cost, aesthetics, durability, maintenance, sound control, ventilation, thermal comfort, fading, and glare control as factors to weigh; it also cautions that energy performance varies by climate. 26 bedroom window-treatment ideas
These are distinct treatment categories and configurations, not a tested ranking of 26 products. Performance depends on the specific material, construction, fit, and installation.

Cellular and pleated shades
- Cellular (honeycomb) shades: Pleated fabric forms cells that trap air. DOE says cellular shades can control daylight, filter glare, offer privacy, reduce nighttime heat loss, minimize drafts near windows, and reduce unwanted solar heat gain. Those functions do not make every cellular shade blackout. DOE: Interior Cellular Shades Boost Home Energy Performance
- Blackout cellular shades: Consider a version whose exact fabric is confirmed as blackout when darkness is the priority; also check the installed edge coverage.
- Light-filtering cellular shades: A choice for soft daylight and glare reduction where complete darkness is not the goal.
- Top-down/bottom-up cellular shades: This operating configuration can be worth considering when you want to manage daylight and privacy from different parts of the window; check the product’s available positions.
- Single-cell cellular shades: Compare the cell construction and product specifications rather than assuming a performance level from the category name.
- Double-cell cellular shades: A different cell configuration to compare when thermal comfort is a priority; verify the specific product and fit.
- Pleated shades: DOE recognizes pleated shades as a window-attachment category. Exact construction, light control, and performance depend on the product.
Roller and blind styles
- Blackout roller shades: A simple-profile option if the selected material and installation are verified to block light as intended.
- Light-filtering roller shades: Use when glare reduction and filtered daylight matter more than a dark room.
- Solar roller shades: Compare the product’s stated view-through and glare characteristics; do not infer privacy after dark without checking its specifications.
- Dual roller shades: A paired configuration can provide separate light-control choices; confirm how each layer performs and operates.
- Horizontal blinds: Slat position changes light and view-through. DOE’s installed-base work identifies blinds as a common covering, but does not establish universal bedroom blackout performance.
- Wood-look horizontal blinds: Compare material, upkeep, slat control, and the light gaps of the specific design.
- Vertical blinds: An established category in DOE’s installed-base analysis and an option to consider for broad glazing; verify dimensions and coverage for the particular window.
- Interior shutters: DOE lists shutters as a window-attachment category. Compare fit, light gaps, privacy, upkeep, and cost using product-specific information.
Curtains, drapery, and layered configurations
- Blackout curtain panels: Check the fabric’s actual light-blocking claim, panel dimensions, and how much the panels overlap the window.
- Room-darkening curtains: A possible middle ground when reducing light is more important than making a room completely dark; verify the product’s description and coverage.
- Light-filtering curtains: Choose when you want softened daylight rather than full light exclusion.
- Sheer curtains: A decorative, daylight-friendly layer; do not treat sheers alone as a blackout solution.
- Sheer curtains with blackout panels: Combine a daylight layer with a separate layer intended for darkness, checking the panel overlap and fit.
- Curtains over a roller shade: Pair a shade’s clean profile with fabric panels; judge light control by the shade and curtain together.
- Curtains over cellular shades: Layer for a different appearance or additional coverage, while evaluating the shade’s fit and the curtains’ opacity separately.
- Full-length drapery: A fabric-forward option; verify the panel length and width for the opening rather than relying on the style name to predict coverage.
- Double-width curtain panels: More fabric can create fuller gathers and overlap; confirm the total panel width relative to the window.
- Inside-mounted shade with outside-mounted curtains: A configuration that lets the shade fit within the opening while the curtains extend beyond it; measure both placements and follow product instructions.
- Layered shades and drapery: Combine an adjustable shade with a curtain layer when the room needs more than one light or privacy setting; ensure each layer can be operated as intended.
What the energy evidence does—and does not—say
Cellular shades have a documented thermal mechanism: their honeycomb cells trap air. DOE describes potential reductions in nighttime heat loss and drafts, as well as less unwanted solar heat gain. Actual results depend on the product, fit, climate, and use.
DOE’s 2019 discussion reports laboratory comparisons of cellular shades with vinyl Venetian blinds. With all shades down, the reported HVAC savings were 13.3% (±1.3) for cooling and 9.3% (±1.9) for heating. Under “Typical Use,” the figures were 5.8% (±0.5) for cooling and 2.0% (±1.3) for heating. These are results from specific test scenarios, not predicted savings for a particular bedroom or household. DOE Better Buildings Residential Network: Window Treatments

Climate and behavior matter. DOE reports regional differences in window-covering prevalence and operation, including more summer closure in the Southern climate zone than in the Northern zone in the studied data. That finding is context, not a universal rule for how to operate a bedroom treatment. The DOE installed-base report also describes different category shares: its summary says blinds make up 62% of the installed base, including a 27% share for vinyl and metal horizontal blinds; curtains represent 19%, shades 17%, and shutters 2%. These figures describe the report’s categories and context, not a current product recommendation. DOE: Residential Windows and Window Coverings

Check fit, care, and ratings before buying
- Measure the opening and planned mount: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for inside or outside mounting and confirm that the dimensions suit the window.
- Verify light and privacy claims: Check the exact fabric or material, operation, and edge coverage. Category labels alone do not establish blackout performance.
- Confirm care and durability: Review cleaning instructions and material details, especially for a treatment that will be operated daily.
- Check energy ratings directly: AERC is a DOE-described rating and certification program for window attachments. If energy-rated performance matters, confirm that the exact product has a current applicable rating; do not infer it from a brand or category. DOE: Hunter Douglas Receives First-Ever Energy Performance Rating for Window Attachments
- If you rent: Check whether the installation hardware and mounting method are allowed before making holes or changing existing fixtures. DOE: 5 Tips for Energy-Saving Renters
