A solid barrier or earth berm can block part of the direct sound path between a noise source and your seating area. A fountain works differently: it adds sound that may make noise less noticeable, but it does not stop noise from reaching the yard.
1. Put a solid, continuous barrier between the noise and your seating area
Start by identifying the main noise source—such as a road, neighboring property, or mechanical equipment—and the part of the yard you want to protect. A fence or wall is most useful when it interrupts the line of sight between that source and the seating area. Its height, length, location, and continuity matter more than the material’s label.

Barriers can be made from earth, masonry, wood, metal, or other materials, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Sound can still pass over, through, or around a barrier, so gaps, open gates, and short ends can limit its usefulness. A barrier may also be less effective if the noise source is elevated above it—for example, when a home sits on a hillside above a highway.

As highway-engineering context, the FHWA says highway barriers typically reduce traffic-noise levels by 5 to 10 decibels; that range is not a guaranteed result for a residential yard. The outcome depends on site conditions and barrier design. The FHWA also describes an additional 1.5 decibels of noise reduction per meter of barrier height after the barrier breaks the source-to-receiver line of sight. These are highway-barrier figures, not a backyard performance promise. See the agency’s highway traffic noise barriers overview.

Plan the build before choosing materials
- Check local requirements for height, setbacks, permits, property lines, visibility, drainage, and wind loading.
- Plan a continuous barrier that blocks the sightline from the noise source to the area you use.
- For substantial construction or a serious noise problem, consult a qualified acoustical professional. The Australian Government’s YourHome noise-control guidance recommends professional advice for consequential acoustic situations.
2. Build an earth berm—or combine one with a wall—if space allows
An earth berm is a long mound of soil placed between a noise source and the area you want to protect. Like a fence or wall, it can block the direct sound path. It may also blend more naturally into landscaping, but it takes substantial space: the taller the berm, the more land and earthwork it generally requires.
Before choosing a berm, consider the footprint, excavation or fill, drainage, erosion control, and planting or maintenance. A berm combined with a wall may be worth considering when a berm alone would take too much room. FHWA guidance discusses roadway berms designed above the source-to-receiver sightline, but roadway examples should not be treated as a do-it-yourself performance guarantee.

Compare a berm with a fence or wall
| Consideration | Fence or wall | Earth berm |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Can provide a barrier with less ground footprint than a berm; local height and setback rules still apply. | Needs substantial ground space, especially when taller. |
| Sound path | Must block the sightline and be continuous; gaps and sound traveling around the ends reduce usefulness. | Can block the same direct path if its height and position interrupt the sightline. |
| Construction and upkeep | Material, structural needs, drainage, and wind loading depend on the site and local requirements. | Requires earthwork and attention to drainage, erosion control, and planting or maintenance. |
| Design fit | Material and appearance can be selected for the property, subject to local rules. | Can be integrated into landscaping but changes the ground profile. |
| Elevated source | A source above the barrier can limit its benefit. | A source above the berm can limit its benefit. |
3. Add a fountain to mask noise—not to soundproof the yard
A fountain or waterfall adds a steady sound that may make some intermittent or harsh noise less noticeable. The Washington State Department of Transportation describes white noise, including a waterfall, as a masking approach that some people report finding useful. A water feature changes the soundscape; it does not prevent noise from crossing the yard. Consider one for ambience or comfort, not as a substitute for a physical barrier.
Do trees and shrubs reduce traffic noise?
Planting can improve privacy, soften the view of a barrier, and make a yard feel more comfortable, but an ordinary residential hedge is not a reliable substitute for a solid barrier. YourHome advises against relying on normal residential planting as a physical noise barrier.

Dense, tall, deep vegetation may make a measurable difference in some traffic-noise settings, but it takes far more than a typical hedge. The North Carolina Department of Transportation says vegetation needs at least 100 feet of depth for a 5-decibel traffic-noise reduction. That figure is specific to the agency’s traffic-noise context, not a promise for a backyard planting. NCDOT also says landscaping can soften harsh traffic tones and screen a road. Its noise barriers guidance is timestamped June 24, 2026.
