It may supply magnesium when a soil test confirms a deficiency, but the available Extension guidance does not support routine use to improve pumpkin growth, fruiting, or yield. The useful reasons to consider it are conditional: diagnose a likely deficiency, confirm it with a test, and choose a treatment that fits the soil.
1. It can supply magnesium when a deficiency is confirmed
Magnesium is a plant nutrient, and Epsom salt can supply it. That does not mean every pumpkin plant needs an application: Extension guidance advises using a magnesium source when soil testing identifies a deficiency. Research cited by Penn State Extension did not establish increased productivity except where soil was magnesium-deficient, and the guidance notes that excess can be harmful. Penn State Extension’s guidance on Epsom salts therefore does not support using the product as a routine growth or yield booster.

For cucurbits, magnesium deficiency may show as yellowing between leaf veins, first on older leaves and later on newer growth. Kentucky Extension says it is more likely in sandy, low-pH soils, particularly in dry years, and can appear during rapid growth as fruit enlarges. Those are clues, not a diagnosis. Kentucky’s cucurbit guidance gives at least 200 lb magnesium per acre as a soil-test level in its deficiency guidance; this is a regional, production-context figure, not a home-garden target or an instruction to apply that amount.
2. A soil test can distinguish magnesium deficiency from look-alikes
Yellow or damaged pumpkin leaves do not identify one cause on their own. Light, watering, nutrient problems, disease, pests, weather, and soil pH can all affect leaf appearance or nutrient availability. A soil test helps assess magnesium and pH before you choose an amendment. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s yellowing-leaves diagnostic guidance and University of Georgia Extension’s soil-test handbook provide further context for interpreting plant symptoms and soil results.

Follow the test report and local Extension advice rather than selecting a rate from a general gardening tip. Recommendations can differ by region, soil, and whether they address home-garden or commercial production. If the test does not show low magnesium, do not add Epsom salt to treat yellow leaves; investigate other possible causes instead.
3. Avoiding an unnecessary application can prevent harm
More magnesium is not automatically better. Excess magnesium can interfere with calcium uptake, and unnecessary applications may contribute to mineral contamination of water moving through soil. Spraying Epsom salt solution on leaves can also scorch them. These risks are a reason to diagnose before treating, not evidence that Epsom salt is inherently harmful when correctly recommended. Penn State Extension discusses the risks of excess use.

How to choose an amendment if the test shows low magnesium
The right product depends partly on whether the soil also needs lime. Dolomitic lime supplies magnesium while raising soil pH, so it may fit when a test indicates both low magnesium and a need for lime. Kentucky Extension lists magnesium oxide and dolomitic lime as possible preplant sources and says Epsom salts may be fertigated if necessary; Georgia Extension recommends dolomitic limestone when magnesium is low and lime is recommended. These are context-specific production recommendations, not a universal home-garden prescription. Kentucky Extension and Georgia Extension provide regional guidance.

That recommendation comes from a page dating to approximately 2010 and is for commercial production; it should not be converted into a home pumpkin-bed dose. Oregon State’s production guidance is specific to that context.

- Test soil magnesium and pH before applying a magnesium amendment.
- If lime is recommended along with magnesium, ask whether dolomitic lime is appropriate.
- Use Epsom salt only at the rate and by the method recommended for your soil and growing context.
- If the test does not confirm a deficiency, look for other explanations for leaf symptoms rather than applying magnesium by habit.
