25 Ultra-Clever IKEA BILLY Bookcase Hacks That Look Custom

The best IKEA BILLY hacks do more than add paint: they turn a simple bookcase into built-in storage, a room divider, a concealed office, a media console, a display cabinet, or a solution for an awkward gap. BILLY works well as a starting point because the system has adjustable shelves, optional doors, extra shelves, and height-extension units. In the current standard U.S. configuration, a BILLY is listed at 31 1/2 inches wide, 11 inches deep, and 79 1/2 inches high, with a stated maximum shelf load of 66 pounds.

That modular design makes the bookcase unusually hackable, but it does not make every modification automatically safe. The projects below are inspiration categories based on published maker examples and IKEA’s BILLY system—not independently load-tested plans or IKEA endorsements.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For the best result, decide on the complete configuration first, then buy the doors, shelves, extenders, trim, lighting, and finish materials that match that exact BILLY width, depth, production version, and purchase date.

Before choosing a BILLY hack

Measure the wall, ceiling, door swings, baseboards, outlets, radiators, and any heating or ventilation equipment before buying a single case. A standard BILLY may be 79 1/2 inches tall, but a height extender, plinth, countertop, crown molding, or uneven floor changes the final dimension quickly.

Current BILLY configurations generally include one stationary shelf and four adjustable shelves, with additional shelves, doors, and height-extension components available for the system. Compatibility is not universal: verify the exact article number and dimensions before ordering a replacement shelf or OXBERG door. IKEA notes that at least some replacement shelves do not fit bookcases purchased in spring 2014 or earlier.

Useful materials for these projects

Depending on the hack, you may need an IKEA BILLY bookcase, BILLY extra shelves, OXBERG doors, a furniture wall-anchor kit, a stud finder, a torpedo level, corner clamps, wood or MDF trim, wood filler, sandpaper, Bonding primer for IKEA furniture, interior paint, peel-and-stick wallpaper, cabinet pulls, hinges, a track and wheels, or an LED picture light. Treat IKEA components and third-party materials as separate products: check dimensions, load ratings, instructions, and current availability before substituting anything.

Quick comparison: which hack suits your project?

Hack type Difficulty Renter-friendly? Wall-attached or cutting-intensive?
Wallpapered or painted back Easy Usually, if removable finishes are used Normally no cutting; anchor the case
New hardware or shelf styling Easy Sometimes Drilling may be required
Trim, molding, lighting, or doors Intermediate Sometimes Usually wall-attached
Low media console or desk attachment Intermediate Rarely Attachment and cable openings
Wall-to-wall or color-drenched library Advanced No Anchoring, framing, and trim
Rolling bookcase door or room divider Advanced Only with permission Track, wheels, and careful anchoring
Narrow gap wine rack Advanced No Cutting-intensive; preserve structure

Renter-friendly does not mean anchor-free. A removable wallpaper backing or detachable hardware may be reversible, but a tall bookcase still needs the required anti-tip attachment. Ask the landlord before drilling, adding a track, or altering a door.

Built-ins and architectural-looking storage

1. Build a wall-to-wall library on a cabinet base

The transformation: Make several BILLYs read as one continuous library by raising them on a level base and filling the gaps around them. The lower section can become closed storage while the upper section remains an open bookcase.

Core materials: Four or more BILLY units, base cabinets such as kitchen cabinets, a properly constructed raised plinth, 2×4 framing where appropriate, filler strips, crown molding, wallpaper or paint for the backs, and baseboard.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: Not renter-friendly. Cutting and attachment: Framing, trim cutting, and wall anchoring are required.

Build notes: A documented example used four BILLY bookcases above IKEA kitchen cabinets, with 2×4 framing, molding, paint, and wallpapered backs. Start by finding the highest point in the floor and building a level plinth; otherwise every shelf line will exaggerate the floor’s slope. Scribe or fit filler strips to the side walls, hide vertical seams with trim, and install the crown molding only after the cases are level and secured. Do not rely on the decorative trim or countertop to keep the cases upright.

2. Create a fireplace or television built-in

The transformation: Place BILLY units on both sides of a fireplace or television, then join the composition visually with a continuous top, trim, paint, and selected doors or lower cabinets.

Core materials: BILLY cases, optional OXBERG or other compatible doors, a level base, filler panels, decorative trim, paint, hardware, and appropriate television or furniture anchoring hardware.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Wall attachment and trim work are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: Published examples use paint, scalloped trim, and new hardware to make the arrangement look like custom furniture. Keep the fireplace manufacturer’s required clearances and ventilation paths; never box in heat-producing equipment based only on a photograph. For a television, treat the console and screen as separate safety questions: anchor the BILLY arrangement, secure the television according to its instructions, and do not describe the result as a tested load-bearing TV stand.

3. Finish a crown-molding library wall

The transformation: Line up multiple BILLY cases across one wall, conceal the vertical breaks, and use crown molding to make the upper edge look intentional and architectural.

Core materials: Multiple BILLYs, narrow wood strips or filler, crown molding, caulk or wood filler, bonding primer for IKEA furniture, interior paint, a level, and suitable anchors.

Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Wall anchoring and miter cuts are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: Level each case independently before joining the visual treatment. Hide seams with flat strips rather than trying to make two factory edges disappear under paint. Inside the finished wall, arrange adjustable shelves according to book height: tall books on some shelves, boxes or objects on others, and a few open spaces to avoid a crowded display. IKEA’s own styling guidance supports mixing books, boxes, and decorative objects instead of filling every opening identically.

4. Make an imperfect wall look custom with mixed widths

The transformation: Alternate wide and narrow BILLY cases to work around a doorway, corner, window, or irregular wall rather than forcing identical units into an awkward line.

Core materials: A mix of BILLY widths, filler strips, baseboard, trim, paint, and wall anchors.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: Usually no. Cutting and attachment: Trim cutting and anchoring are needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: A five-unit arrangement using alternating widths can make a corner appear designed rather than leftover. Draw the arrangement on the wall or on graph paper first, including the door casing and baseboard. Use the narrowest unit where access is tight, but do not use filler to compensate for a case that physically blocks a doorway or interferes with a door’s swing. A vertical trim strip between widths gives the eye a deliberate rhythm and hides small alignment differences.

5. Color-drench the entire library wall

The transformation: Paint the BILLY cases, surrounding wall, trim, and selected accessories in one strong color so the arrangement looks like a furniture wall rather than separate flat-pack units.

Core materials: BILLY units, bonding primer, interior paint suitable for the surfaces, caulk, wood filler, sandpaper, drop cloths, and compatible trim.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: No, unless every painted surface can be returned to its original condition. Cutting and attachment: Usually no structural cutting, but the cases must be anchored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: A published example used five BILLYs, including a narrow unit, and painted the complete arrangement emerald green. Clean and lightly abrade glossy surfaces, test the primer and paint in an inconspicuous area, and let each coat cure according to the product directions. Paint the wall and trim separately if the finishes require different products. A saturated color makes gaps and uneven caulk more visible, so level the cases and fill seams before the final coat.

6. Add a wood countertop to create a cabinet-like base

The transformation: Use BILLY cases with doors below, then cap them with a thick stained wood top and matching baseboard for the look of a built-in sideboard or storage wall.

Core materials: BILLY cabinets and compatible doors, a properly supported wood countertop, stain or finish, baseboard, custom pulls, filler, and anchors.

Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Top and baseboard need cutting; wall attachment is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: One documented project combined BILLY cabinets and doors with a cherry top, baseboard, and custom pulls. Measure the assembled cabinet run—not the product names—before ordering the top. The countertop should be supported and fastened in a way appropriate to its material and span; do not assume the thin bookcase sides alone can carry a heavy stone, appliance, or worktop. Leave access for doors, cords, and cleaning, and anchor the units before fitting the finished top.

7. Turn BILLY into a china cabinet or dining-room hutch

The transformation: Combine wide and narrow cases, height extenders, glass or panel doors, glass shelves, and lighting to create a tall display cabinet for china, glassware, or collectibles.

Core materials: Wide and narrow BILLY units, BILLY height extenders, compatible OXBERG glass, panel, or wood doors, shelves, lighting, pulls, and wall anchors.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Usually trim and wiring work; anchor the complete cabinet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: IKEA Hackers has documented this configuration with BILLY height extenders, OXBERG doors, lighting, and glass shelves. Verify the exact case width, door size, hinge arrangement, and production date before buying parts. Glassware is heavy and concentrated; distribute it rather than placing all the weight on one shelf. Use low-voltage lighting designed for enclosed furniture, keep wires away from hinge movement, and anchor the tall upper section before loading it.

8. Follow a sloped ceiling or doorframe

The transformation: Use different BILLY heights or widths to step around a sloped ceiling, stair line, door casing, or other architectural obstruction, then unify the mismatched cases with paint and trim.

Core materials: BILLY cases in suitable sizes, height-extension units where compatible, filler strips, scribe or decorative trim, a level, paint, and anchors.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Measuring and trim fitting are essential; cutting the bookcase itself should be avoided unless the construction and support are fully understood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: Measure the obstruction at several points because ceilings and floors are rarely perfectly level. Put the tallest case where it has the most clearance and use shorter units as a controlled step-down. Trim should bridge visual differences, not serve as the structural connection. Maintain enough clearance to reach the required anchoring point above each unit, and never cut away a structural side, fixed shelf, or fastening area simply to make a case fit.

Hidden and flexible storage

9. Build a sliding bookshelf door

The transformation: Mount one or more BILLY cases on a rolling track so the shelves conceal a closet, storage area, or passage when closed.

Core materials: BILLY cases, a track system rated for the finished load, compatible rollers or bottom wheels, guides, handles, a level, and structural mounting hardware.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: No without explicit permission. Cutting and attachment: Track installation and careful alignment are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: A published example uses a track mechanism, bottom wheels, and BILLY units as sliding doors. Calculate the weight of the empty case, shelves, doors, books, and decorative contents before selecting the track. Confirm that the wall or ceiling can support the track, install an anti-jump or guide mechanism when specified, and leave a controlled stop so the bookcase cannot roll into a wall or person. Keep the opening usable during installation and do not load the moving unit until the travel path has been tested empty.

10. Conceal a closet with rolling BILLYs

The transformation: Use two or more rolling bookcases as a movable wall that hides a storage closet while keeping the contents accessible when the cases slide aside.

Core materials: Two or more BILLYs, a heavy-duty rolling track and floor guides, decorative arch material, integrated or low-voltage lighting, handles, and anchors for any stationary framing.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Track, wheels, trim, and electrical planning may be involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: One documented concealed-closet project used sliding, lit BILLY bookcases with decorative arch detailing and dark paint. Treat this as a moving architectural element, not an ordinary freestanding shelf. Keep the closet’s ventilation and access intact, protect cords from the rolling path, and use stops and guides designed for the completed weight. If the closet is part of an exit route, obtain professional advice before reducing its clear width.

11. Separate a studio sleeping area with a curtain doorway

The transformation: Arrange BILLY cases in a line to divide a studio or open room, then leave a passage covered by a curtain rather than installing a swinging door.

Core materials: Four BILLY units, height extenders if needed, curtain rod or ceiling track, fabric, wallpaper for the backs, trim, and wall anchors.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: The finish can be renter-friendly, but anchoring and curtain hardware may require permission. Cutting and attachment: Usually no case cutting; secure the row and curtain hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: A renter-oriented example used four BILLY bookcases, two extenders, wallpapered backs, and a curtain. Decide whether the backs will face the living area or sleeping area before assembling. Keep the curtain opening wide enough for daily use and do not turn the divider into a blocked emergency exit. Wallpaper can make the exposed backs feel finished, while the curtain softens the hard line without adding the swing clearance required by a door.

12. Use an open BILLY room divider

The transformation: Zone a studio, home office, or living room with open shelving that separates functions while preserving light and sightlines.

Core materials: Several BILLY cases, a framed or plinth base, extenders, trim, molding, baskets, and wall or floor attachment hardware appropriate to the layout.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: Usually no. Cutting and attachment: A stable base and anti-tip attachment are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: A documented studio makeover placed multiple BILLYs and extenders on a framed base, then added trim and molding. A divider is more vulnerable to side forces than a case placed against a wall, so do not simply line up unconnected units in the middle of a room. Build a level base, join the cases as appropriate, and secure the arrangement to a wall, floor, or other structure using a method suitable for the room. Keep heavy books low and leave some openings clear to preserve light.

13. Make closed-door mudroom lockers

The transformation: Convert open shelves into individual drop zones for coats, bags, shoes, and seasonal accessories by rearranging shelves, adding hooks and doors, and assigning baskets to each section.

Core materials: BILLY cases, compatible doors, hooks, baskets, shelf supports, labels, backing or a solid mounting surface for hooks, and wall anchors.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: Usually no. Cutting and attachment: Hook mounting and anchoring are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: IKEA specifically identifies BILLY as a candidate for removing shelves and adding coat hooks for mudroom-style lockers. Do not hang heavy coats from thin backing alone; use a suitable solid backer or fastening method for the hook load. Leave enough room for wet footwear to dry, avoid blocking ventilation, and use doors only where their swing will not collide with adjacent lockers or a hallway.

14. Hide a home office inside a BILLY bureau

The transformation: Turn one BILLY with doors into a compact workstation that closes away after work, concealing a laptop, notebooks, and office supplies.

Core materials: A BILLY with compatible doors, an extra shelf, hinges, L-brackets, friction hinges or stays, a compact work surface, cable grommet or opening, and a power strip.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Drilling and structural attachment are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: The documented construction concept uses an extra shelf, hinges, L-brackets, friction hinges, and a power strip. The fold-down surface must be supported in its open position; hinges alone should not be treated as a desk leg. Test the door clearance and the cable route before installing the hardware, keep the power strip accessible without pinching its cord, and anchor the BILLY so opening the bureau cannot tip it forward.

15. Add a fold-away desk extension

The transformation: Attach a removable tabletop to a BILLY shelf and support it with an adjustable leg, creating a temporary workstation that can be taken down when the room needs to change function.

Core materials: A tabletop, shelf attachment hardware, an adjustable leg, removable fasteners if desired, a level, and wall anchors for the BILLY.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: Sometimes, depending on the attachment method and wall anchoring. Cutting and attachment: Drilling or fastening is required.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: This is a design adaptation, not a guaranteed desk-load rating. Set the adjustable leg on a firm, level surface and make sure the tabletop cannot slide or rack when someone leans on it. Keep the work surface shallow enough to avoid creating excessive leverage on the shelf and case. Remove the tabletop before moving the BILLY, and never use a removable desk as a seat or step.

16. Adapt low BILLYs into a media console

The transformation: Place low BILLY units side by side, add a continuous top, and use doors or baskets to hide consoles, remotes, games, and cables.

Core materials: Low BILLY units, a continuous top, doors or baskets, cable grommets, trim, ventilation openings, and anti-tip hardware.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: Rarely. Cutting and attachment: Cable openings and top fitting may require cutting; anchor the units.

Build notes: This is a useful design adaptation, but it should not be called a tested load-bearing television stand unless the specific television, top, fasteners, and attachment method have been verified. Leave airflow around electronics, route cords through protected openings, and secure the television separately according to its instructions. A continuous top can unify the appearance, but it does not automatically increase the safe capacity of the BILLY cases.

Decorative upgrades that make BILLY look less mass-produced

17. Wallpaper the backing

The transformation: Add patterned wallpaper or removable wallpaper to the back panels so the shelf interiors become a deliberate design feature.

Core materials: Peel-and-stick wallpaper for bookcase backing, a wallpaper smoothing tool, a sharp knife, measuring tools, and a clean, dry application surface.

Difficulty: Easy. Renter status: Often, if the wallpaper is genuinely removable and the surface allows clean removal. Cutting and attachment: No structural cutting; anchor the bookcase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: Wallpaper is one of the quickest BILLY upgrades and works especially well when the exposed backs face a room or when the shelves contain glassware and neutral objects. Apply it before the cases are pushed into their final position when possible. Test a small area first, especially on older or delicate backing panels, and avoid covering any required hardware, ventilation opening, or anchor point.

18. Paint only the back panels for a monochrome or tonal effect

The transformation: Paint the backs a contrasting, darker, or closely matched color while leaving the frames neutral. The shelves gain depth without the commitment of painting every visible surface.

Core materials: Interior paint, appropriate primer, painter’s tape, small rollers or brushes, sandpaper, and drop cloths.

Difficulty: Easy. Renter status: Sometimes, if the original surfaces can be restored. Cutting and attachment: No structural cutting; wall anchoring remains necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: This is an editorial variation on documented wallpapered-back and painted BILLY styling. Remove shelves where practical, clean the surface, and test adhesion before painting every panel. A dark back makes books and pale objects stand out; a tonal back makes the entire case look deeper. Keep paint out of shelf-pin holes and hardware openings so adjustable shelves still operate correctly.

19. Add scalloped or wavy trim

The transformation: Attach a scalloped, arched, or wavy MDF or thin-wood treatment to the front edges, then repaint the unit and add decorative hardware.

Core materials: MDF or thin wood, a template, jigsaw or suitable cutting tool, adhesive or fasteners, wood filler, sandpaper, bonding primer, paint, and pulls.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Cutting and permanent attachment are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: Published BILLY examples use scalloped trim and wavy fronts to create a furniture-like silhouette. Make a full-size template before cutting the decorative pieces, and keep the profile clear of door hinges, shelf adjustment holes, and adjacent units. Thin trim is easier to align and places less leverage on the case than a heavy overlay. Fill fastener holes, prime the entire treatment, and use a consistent reveal so small variations do not accumulate across a long wall.

20. Wrap BILLY doors in pole wrap or cane texture

The transformation: Cover the front of BILLY doors with pole wrap or a similar slatted or woven-texture material, then finish the doors with paint and new pulls.

Core materials: BILLY doors, pole wrap or cane-texture material, adhesive or appropriate fasteners, clamps, primer, paint, and cabinet pulls.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: Usually no. Cutting and attachment: Material must be cut and attached to the doors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: Apartment Therapy reports a door-and-pole-wrap makeover completed over a weekend, but timing depends on surface preparation, adhesive cure, and paint drying. Dry-fit the material around the door edges and hinges before bonding it. Added weight or thickness can change the hinge alignment and door swing, so check the gap on all sides and adjust the hardware only within its intended range. Keep the texture clear of knobs, catches, and the floor.

21. Add a decorative arch detail

The transformation: Build an arch-shaped surround or front detail from wood or MDF, especially when the BILLYs are concealing a closet or acting as a room divider.

Core materials: Flexible or cut MDF, thin wood, a template, adhesive or fasteners, filler, primer, paint, and optional lighting.

Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Cutting and permanent trim attachment are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: A sliding-bookcase example used arch detailing with black paint and integrated lighting. Treat the arch as a decorative surround, not as a structural beam or track support. Draw the opening at full size, check the case’s moving path or door swing, and leave access to anchors and electrical components. A shallow arch applied to the face is easier to execute than a deep surround and is less likely to interfere with shelves or doors.

22. Highlight the display with picture lights or LEDs

The transformation: Add low-voltage picture lights or LED strip lighting to emphasize books, artwork, glassware, records, or collectibles.

Core materials: An LED picture light or low-voltage LED strip, power supply, cable clips or channels, optional dimmer, and compatible shelves or glass doors.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Renter status: Sometimes with removable lighting and concealed, approved cable routing. Cutting and attachment: Usually attachment and cable management; avoid drilling blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: Integrated lighting appears in documented china-cabinet and room-divider examples. Use lighting intended for the location, keep heat-producing components away from paper and textiles, and prevent wires from being pinched by doors or shelves. Plan the cable route before anchoring the cases. For a renter-friendly version, use removable low-voltage fixtures, but do not let a loose cord become a trip hazard.

23. Replace the standard hardware

The transformation: Swap ordinary knobs or pulls for brass, black, leather, vintage-style, dock-cleat-style, or other deliberately chosen hardware.

Core materials: Cabinet pulls or knobs, a measuring and drilling template, drill, bit, painter’s tape, and wood filler if existing holes must be repaired.

Difficulty: Easy to intermediate. Renter status: Sometimes, particularly when the original hardware can be reinstalled. Cutting and attachment: Drilling may be required; anchor the case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: Documented projects use brass hardware, dock-cleat-style pulls, and IKEA bar pulls to change the character of BILLY doors. Mark every hole with a template rather than measuring each door independently. Check screw length so it does not protrude through the door, and confirm that the pull does not strike an adjacent door, wall, or shelf. Save the original hardware and fill or conceal holes if the change must be reversed.

Task-specific BILLY conversions

24. Fit a narrow BILLY into a wasted gap as a wine rack

The transformation: Adapt a narrow BILLY to fill the otherwise unused space beside a pantry, cabinet, or wall, then organize bottles on shelves or a purpose-built rack.

Core materials: A narrow BILLY or suitable narrow configuration, a bottle-storage insert or supports, trim, a compatible door if desired, measuring tools, saw tools, filler, and wall anchors.

Difficulty: Advanced. Renter status: No. Cutting and attachment: Cutting-intensive and permanently attached.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build notes: IKEA Hackers documents a narrow BILLY cut down for an opening of roughly six inches. Measure the gap at the top, middle, and bottom before committing to the cut, and check for baseboard, pipework, and wall irregularities. This is not a license to remove structural panels casually: preserve the joints, fixed shelf, back support, and fastening points needed to keep the case square. Add bottle supports that prevent rolling, distribute the load, and anchor the finished unit. If the required width leaves no practical margin for a stable case, use a purpose-built rack instead.

25. Create a record, craft, toy, or collection display

The transformation: Tune the adjustable shelves, doors, lighting, color, and containers to a specific collection instead of treating BILLY as generic book storage.

Core materials: BILLY cases, extra shelves, compatible doors, baskets or archival boxes, dividers, labels, LED lighting, and paint or wallpaper.

Difficulty: Easy to intermediate. Renter status: Sometimes for styling changes, but the unit still needs anchoring. Cutting and attachment: Usually none unless adding custom dividers or lighting.

Build notes: IKEA recommends arranging BILLY shelves by item height, and design coverage shows the system used for vinyl storage and varied display collections. Measure record sleeves, craft boxes, toy bins, and collectibles before fixing shelf positions; do not assume an older or modified case has the same usable depth. Keep heavy collections low, use doors to control dust, and leave ventilation around electronics or delicate materials. A color-coded arrangement, repeated baskets, and a few deliberately empty shelves can make a practical collection look curated.

How to make any BILLY hack look built in

  1. Measure the real room. Include baseboards, outlets, doors, windows, ceiling height, floor slope, and the space required above the case for wall anchoring.
  2. Choose the case configuration before the finish. Decide on wide versus narrow units, extenders, doors, and shelf positions first. This prevents buying trim or wallpaper for a layout that changes later.
  3. Dry-fit every component. Check door swings, shelf-pin locations, extender compatibility, countertop overhangs, track travel, and lighting routes before cutting.
  4. Build level and anchor early. Shim or construct a suitable plinth where necessary, join cases as appropriate, and complete the required wall attachment before loading the shelves.
  5. Hide the flat-pack clues. Use filler strips for side gaps, trim for vertical seams, a continuous baseboard, and crown molding or a carefully finished top at the ceiling.
  6. Prepare the factory finish. Clean, lightly abrade, and test a bonding primer before painting. Use wood filler and sanding to improve visible seams, but do not fill shelf-pin holes or hardware openings.
  7. Add accessories last. Install doors, pulls, lights, baskets, and decorative backing only after the cases are square and secure.
  8. Load by risk, not just by space. Put dense books, records, bottles, and hardware lower; distribute weight across cases; and do not apply the original 66-pound shelf figure to a cut, drilled, extended, or otherwise modified component.

Project planning checklist

  • Confirm the BILLY width, depth, height, article number, and purchase date.
  • Verify that replacement shelves, OXBERG doors, extenders, hinges, and hardware match that exact version.
  • Identify the wall construction and select suitable screws and plugs; use a stud finder where appropriate.
  • Leave enough space above the unit to complete the required anti-tip anchoring.
  • Decide whether the project involves paint, wallpaper, trim, doors, lighting, a countertop, wheels, or cutting.
  • For a built-in, plan the plinth, filler strips, seam treatment, baseboard, and crown molding as one system.
  • For a divider or rolling door, calculate the finished weight and check the track, floor, wall, and travel path.
  • For a TV, desk, wine rack, or heavy collection, assess the modified load separately rather than relying on the unmodified product specification.
  • Follow fireplace, electrical, lighting, and television manufacturers’ instructions where those systems are involved.

What to buy first—and what to postpone

Buy the BILLY cases and make a full-size layout before committing to decorative accessories. Once the configuration is confirmed, purchase only the compatible doors, shelves, and height extenders. Then choose the finish: primer and paint for a permanent transformation, or removable wallpaper and detachable hardware for a more reversible update. Trim, molding, filler, countertop material, lighting, and specialty hardware should be measured against the assembled arrangement rather than estimated from the product name.

For older BILLY units, especially those bought in spring 2014 or earlier, do not assume a current replacement shelf or OXBERG door will fit. Compare the article number, actual dimensions, hinge locations, and shelf-support positions. When in doubt, use the existing component as a template or contact IKEA before cutting anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every BILLY shelf or OXBERG door fit every BILLY bookcase?

No. Compatibility can depend on the exact width, depth, production version, article number, and purchase date. Verify the dimensions and product details before ordering. IKEA notes that some replacement shelves do not fit bookcases purchased in spring 2014 or earlier.

Do I need to anchor a BILLY used only for decoration?

Yes. IKEA requires BILLY to be securely anchored to the wall with suitable screws and plugs. Leave adequate space above the unit for the anchoring work, and choose hardware appropriate to the wall.

Can I use a hacked BILLY as a TV stand or desk?

You can adapt the design, but do not assume the modified unit is tested for that load. Secure the television separately, provide proper support for a desk surface, manage cables safely, and assess the added top, hardware, and contents as a complete structure.

Which BILLY hacks are easiest for beginners?

Wallpapered backs, painted-back panels, shelf styling, and replacement hardware are the simplest. Trim, doors, lighting, and low-console adaptations are intermediate. Built-ins, rolling bookcase doors, room dividers, countertops, and cut-down wine racks are advanced.

The Bottom Line

BILLY becomes convincingly custom when the configuration, anchoring, proportions, and finish are planned together. Start with the storage problem—an empty wall, awkward gap, concealed closet, compact desk, or collection—verify every component’s compatibility, secure the cases properly, and add trim or color only after the structure is level and stable.
