The best evergreen shrub is the one that fits your garden’s conditions and available space. Evergreens keep their foliage through the year, bringing structure, screening and colour to winter landscapes, but no single list works for every site. These 25 RHS-listed choices cover shade, coastal exposure, hedging, ground cover, flowers, berries and ornamental foliage. The examples and growing guidance are UK-oriented; check local climate, soil and plant availability before choosing. The Royal Horticultural Society puts the key step simply: “Before choosing a shrub it is important to understand your garden.”
How to choose an evergreen shrub
Start with the planting site, not the plant’s appearance in a catalogue. Assess sun and shade, soil, rainfall, wind and frost exposure. Then compare each shrub’s eventual height and spread with the space available. A shrub that grows beyond its position may need repeated pruning or moving.

The RHS groups evergreen shrubs by situations such as shade, exposed coastal gardens, hedges and screens, ground cover, flowers and berries, and by mature size. The list below follows those practical uses rather than ranking plants from best to worst. Suitability and dimensions can vary by cultivar and conditions, so check the plant label and regional guidance before buying. For shade
- Aucuba japonica. A useful foliage shrub for shade. Consider it where a sunny flowering display is not the priority.
- Prunus laurocerasus ‘Otto Luyken’. A compact cherry laurel selection named by the RHS for shade. It can also suit screening where its mature size fits the space.
- Skimmia japonica. A shade-tolerant choice that adds seasonal interest through flowers or berries, depending on the plant selected.
- Mahonia aquifolium. A shade option with decorative foliage; check the expected spread before using it in a small bed.
For exposed or coastal sites
- Choisya ternata. An RHS-listed evergreen with flowers, also included among its coastal-site examples. Check exposure and local suitability.
- Griselinia littoralis. A choice specifically named for exposed coastal gardens, where a sheltered inland shrub may struggle.
- Elaeagnus × ebbingei. Useful to consider for coastal exposure as well as hedges and screens. The cultivar ‘Gilt Edge’ is among the RHS’s top evergreen shrub choices.
- Escallonia. Included in the RHS coastal examples. Confirm that the selected type suits your local climate and the space available.
- Pyracantha ‘Orange Glow’. An RHS coastal-site example that also brings ornamental berries. Allow for its eventual size and site it where its growth will not obstruct access.
For hedges and screens
- Ilex aquifolium. English holly is listed by the RHS as an option for hedges and screens. Check the space needed as it matures.
- Prunus laurocerasus. Cherry laurel is an RHS screening example; the named ‘Otto Luyken’ selection is also suggested for shade.
- Taxus baccata. Yew is listed for hedging and screening. Match the intended hedge height and maintenance approach to the space.
- Viburnum tinus. A screening option that also offers seasonal flowers and berries, making it useful where a hedge should contribute ornamental interest.
- Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Gilt Edge’. A foliage-colour selection from a species group used for screens. The RHS includes this cultivar among its top evergreen choices.
For ground cover
- Arctostaphylos uva-ursi. An RHS-listed ground-cover plant. Check local soil and climate requirements before planting.
- Juniperus communis ‘Green Carpet’. A low-growing evergreen juniper named by the RHS for ground cover; choose it where a spreading rather than upright form is wanted.
- Vinca minor. A ground-cover option for areas where a low, spreading plant is more appropriate than a shrub grown for height.
For flowers, berries and foliage interest
- Camellia. The RHS names camellias among evergreen choices for seasonal flowers. Confirm soil suitability: some selections are lime-hating.
- Mahonia × media ‘Charity’. One of the RHS’s top evergreen shrub choices, valued for seasonal flowers. Check its mature size and growing conditions for your site.
- Skimmia. Skimmias can provide flowers or berries and are also listed for shade. Verify the particular plant’s features and site needs when selecting it.
- Viburnum tinus. A versatile choice for flowers and berries as well as hedges and screens; consider whether its eventual dimensions suit the intended role.
- Pyracantha ‘Orange Glow’. The RHS includes it among top evergreen choices and berry-bearing selections. Check the location and mature growth before planting.
- Choisya ternata. A flowering option that also appears in the coastal examples. Site fit matters more than using the same shrub in every garden.
- Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Gilt Edge’. Consider it when foliage colour is part of the design, as well as for screening. Allow room for its mature spread.
- Mahonia aquifolium. A shade choice with decorative foliage, suitable to consider where leaf texture and year-round presence matter.
Some plants appear in more than one group because a shrub can serve several purposes. These are starting points, not guarantees of suitability throughout the UK or elsewhere. The RHS situation guide notes qualifications for particular plants, including lime-hating preferences and sheltered or coastal requirements. Use the plant’s full botanical name and local growing advice to check the selection. RHS situation guide.

Planting and care
Plant at a suitable time and keep new shrubs watered
The RHS recommends planting evergreen shrubs in autumn or spring and avoiding hot or dry weather. During their first year, keep new plants from drying out while they establish. Follow the planting advice for the particular shrub and soil rather than assuming all evergreens need identical treatment. RHS: How to grow shrubs.
Prune according to the shrub, not a blanket calendar
Many established evergreen shrubs need little or no routine pruning. When pruning is needed, timing depends on the plant and its flowering habit: RHS guidance generally places pruning in mid to late spring, while early-flowering evergreens are generally pruned after flowering. Coniferous shrubs may not recover well from hard cutting. Identify the plant and check its pruning group before making substantial cuts. RHS: Pruning Evergreen Shrubs.
