In a tight entryway, keep shoes shallow, move daily coats and bags onto the wall, and add a seat or finishing touch only if the walking path and door swing still work. IKEA’s US examples include the 7 1/8-inch-deep TRONES cabinet, the 8 5/8-inch-deep GULLABERG, and flexible wall and corner arrangements. Measure your usable space before choosing a piece, and check local assortment and current dimensions.
Start by measuring the nook
A product’s depth is only one part of its footprint. Measure usable width, depth and height, then account for baseboards, doors and their swing, radiators, and the route people need to walk through. Check whether a piece can be installed or anchored as intended, and whether frequently used items will remain reachable.

Compare the space with the complete product dimensions—not just the dimension that sounds most convenient. IKEA US lists TRONES at 20 1/2 × 7 1/8 × 15 3/8 inches and GULLABERG at 41 3/8 × 8 5/8 × 42 1/8 inches. These are product specifications, not a universal layout standard; verify current dimensions and local availability before buying.
Give shoes a home without giving up the passage
1. Put a shallow cabinet on the narrowest usable wall
A narrow shoe cabinet may suit a wall where a deeper unit would intrude into the path. IKEA describes TRONES this way: “TRONES shoe cabinet/storage takes up little space because of its narrow design, and can store more than just shoes.” That is IKEA’s product description; check the cabinet’s full dimensions, door clearance and the actual items you intend to store.

2. Use a wider, shallow cabinet when the wall has width
If the nook is shallow but has more available wall width, compare a wider cabinet such as IKEA’s GULLABERG. Its listed dimensions are 41 3/8 × 8 5/8 × 42 1/8 inches, and IKEA notes side hooks. Its greater width and height make it a different fit from a smaller cabinet, so check the whole footprint and the wall layout.
3. Stack open shoe racks for visible, flexible storage
IKEA says GREJIG shoe racks can be stacked up to three high and folded. Open racks keep pairs visible and can be adjusted as needs change. Confirm that the stacked arrangement fits beneath shelves or other obstructions, and leave room to reach shoes.
4. Keep a foldable rack for guests
If the entry is usually clear but guests sometimes need somewhere for shoes, store a foldable rack elsewhere and bring it out when needed. This avoids dedicating the nook’s everyday floor area to occasional overflow.

Use shelf space for shoes that are not in the daily rotation rather than adding another floor unit. IKEA lists a SKUBB box at 8 3/4 × 13 1/2 × 6 1/4 inches. Check shelf depth and the box’s dimensions, and keep the most-used pairs where they are easy to reach.

6. Make a shoe cabinet do double duty
A cabinet may also hold small entry items, as IKEA suggests for TRONES. Decide what belongs there before filling it: measure the item and check the compartment so that a multipurpose idea does not become an awkward fit.
Move everyday coats and small items onto the wall
7. Add a short hook rail or individual hooks
Use a compact run of hooks for the coats and bags that come and go daily. A wall-mounted option can keep floor space open, but choose a location and mounting method suited to the wall and the items being hung.
8. Give children reachable hooks
Designate hooks and storage spots at a height children can use, rather than expecting them to reach adult-level storage. IKEA’s family hallway guidance treats age and height as part of organizing a shared entry.
9. Consider the wall above a radiator only when it suits the space
IKEA shows hooks above a radiator as an example of using an awkward area. It is not a general placement rule: consider heat, clearance, installation requirements and the items being hung before using that location.

10. Fit an adjustable bar into an irregular nook
A clothes bar can use a narrow or awkward recess that is hard to furnish with a standard rack. IKEA lists MULIG’s bar range as 23 5/8–35 3/8 inches. Measure the intended span and confirm it falls within that range before selecting it.
11. Add a narrow shelf or picture ledge above shoe storage
A small ledge can hold a few grab-and-go items without needing another piece of floor furniture. Keep the surface selective so keys or other small necessities do not get buried under clutter.
12. Use a memo board for notes and reminders
A small memo or pinboard can give reminders a defined place instead of spreading them across the entry. Mount it where people can see and use it without narrowing the passage.
13. Put seasonal coats higher up
Move out-of-season coats above the daily hanging zone or into storage boxes so they do not crowd the items used every day. IKEA suggests clothes covers where dust protection is useful; keep frequently needed belongings at a practical height.

14. Give small essentials a labeled box or basket
Use a small container for gloves, hats, keys or pet-walk items, and label it if several people share the entry. IKEA’s hallway examples use small boxes alongside wall organization to make everyday belongings easier to locate.

15. Claim a living-room corner
If the front door opens directly into a living area, a corner can serve as the entry zone. Keep the arrangement visually compact and leave a clear route into the room rather than trying to recreate a full hallway.
16. Combine a few pieces into one corner arrangement
IKEA illustrates a corner by the front door with a freestanding coat rack and shoe stand, plus a shelf, hooks and an umbrella basket. Use only the pieces that meet your needs; the point is to group entry functions together rather than scatter them through the room.

Add finishing touches that support the routine
18. Hang a large or full-length mirror
A mirror gives the entry a last-look spot before leaving. IKEA pairs a large mirror with good lighting in its nook guidance. Choose a location that works with door movement and does not compete with hanging coats.
19. Light the area for finding things and checking an outfit
Make sure the entry has enough usable light for its tasks, such as finding keys or checking clothing. IKEA recommends good lighting but does not specify a fixture or brightness, so choose a solution appropriate to the room and installation.
20. Use an anti-slip underlay beneath an entry rug
An underlay can help keep a rug in place. Follow the rug and underlay manufacturers’ instructions, and make sure the rug does not create a trip point or obstruct a door.

22. Keep decoration modest in a narrow passage
