21 Ways to Hack the IKEA RÅSKOG Utility Cart

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The IKEA RÅSKOG can be more than a storage trolley: its three tiers make it easy to organize supplies and move them where you need them. The best hack depends on your cart’s size, load limits, and whether you need a flat or spill-catching surface. Here are 21 ideas, with the reported builds distinguished from practical concepts to adapt to your own space.

Check your RÅSKOG before choosing a hack

IKEA’s U.S. listings reviewed in 2026 show two RÅSKOG sizes with different dimensions and load ratings. Confirm which version you own, measure the usable shelf area and frame, and check the current product page and manual before buying accessories.

U.S. listing Dimensions Maximum load Other listed details
White, full size 13 3/4 × 17 3/4 × 30 3/8 in. 13 lb per tier; 40 lb total Steel with epoxy powder coating, mesh shelves, lockable castors; indoor use. IKEA says it is not approved for food contact.
Gray-green, smaller 11 × 15 × 24 in. 9 lb per tier; 26 lb total IKEA says it fits under most tables and desks.

Both listings cite EN 16121:2023, Test Parameter 1 – General Use. That is the standard IKEA names for the product; it does not establish that a modified setup or added accessory has been assessed. IKEA also notes that the stock lockable castors provide added stability when the trolley needs to stay put, not a guarantee for a modified or top-heavy cart.

21 RÅSKOG hack ideas

1. Build a rollable laptop workstation

Tom’s Guide contributor reports converting a RÅSKOG into a rolling laptop workstation with soft-roll casters, a monitor/laptop mount, and a hole cut through the top shelf for the upright mount. Read the September 23, 2025 project account as one creator’s build, not proof that the components fit every RÅSKOG or that drilling is suitable for every cart. Cutting the shelf is a permanent modification; verify the mount, placement, and stability for your particular setup.

2. Make a gaming trolley

A community post describes a RÅSKOG gaming trolley with a small TV wall bracket and a 24-inch TV, alongside game equipment. That is one owner’s example, not a general TV-size recommendation or a verified load and stability rating. See the reported gaming trolley for the individual setup.

3. Create a plant-care cart

Keep watering tools, gloves, and potting supplies together, and add a measured liner or tray to catch loose soil. A community user reports using a medium SAMLA lid as a shelf floor; another option described is a VARIERA liner cut to fit. Measure your own cart and check current product dimensions before buying. The community floor-and-liner discussion records user examples, not a universal fit guarantee.

4. Set up a sewing station

Sort thread, scissors, notions, and the project in progress by tier. A side pegboard could keep frequently used tools visible, but a community discussion points to a SKÅDIS example without verified attachment details. Treat the attachment as a separate fit and mounting question; see the community discussion.

5. Sort craft supplies by project stage

Use one tier for tools, another for materials, and the third for works in progress. Small containers can keep loose pieces from shifting when you roll the cart.

6. Make a bathroom restock cart

Group towels, toiletries, and spare supplies for a compact bathroom. Keep the combined contents within the per-tier and total limits for your cart, especially when storing heavier bottles.

7. Use it as bedside storage

Keep books, chargers, and nighttime items close at hand where a conventional nightstand will not fit. Measure the gap beside the bed and leave room to move the cart without catching cords.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Create a mobile art-supply station

Keep frequently used brushes, paper, paints, or drawing tools together, then roll the cart between work areas. Use containers suited to the supplies so small items do not fall through or shift on the mesh shelves.

9. Organize gift-wrapping supplies

Store tape, scissors, tags, ribbon, and smaller wrapping supplies by tier. Measure long paper rolls and any accessories before choosing where they will go; do not assume they will fit within the cart’s footprint.

10. Make a laundry helper

Keep detergent and small laundry supplies together for trips between storage and the washing machine. Store liquids upright in a container that can catch drips, and avoid exceeding the cart’s tier limits.

11. Create an entryway drop zone

Use a small tray on the top tier for keys and other loose items, with reusable bags or mail on lower shelves. Keep the top light enough that everyday items do not make the rolling cart top-heavy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Set up a coffee or tea station

Arrange mugs and sealed tea, coffee, or other supplies for easy access. IKEA says the cart is not approved for food contact, so use suitable containers and do not treat the cart itself as a food-contact surface. Check the official full-size product listing for that restriction.

13. Add pantry overflow storage

Use the tiers for packaged goods or kitchen tools, keeping heavy items low and within the ratings for your cart. The full-size U.S. listing says the cart is not approved for food contact; do not use its shelves as a direct food-contact surface. The white listing and smaller gray-green listing show their respective specifications.

14. Assemble a cleaning-supply caddy

Keep bottles, cloths, and cleaning tools together. Put heavier items on lower tiers and use spill containment where needed, particularly if the cart travels between rooms.

15. Organize a supervised kids’ activity cart

Group books and craft materials so they are easy to bring out and put away. Keep heavier items low and consider the cart’s movement and tipping risk in the space; this setup should not be treated as child-safety equipment.

16. Make a pet-care station

Gather grooming tools, leashes, and sealed supplies in one place. Keep consumables contained and arrange heavier items on the lower tiers while respecting the load limits.

17. Use the smaller cart as a desk-side organizer

Make a mobile home for notebooks, office supplies, or other desk-side essentials. IKEA says the 11 × 15 × 24-inch gray-green version fits under most tables and desks; measure your desk clearance rather than assuming it will fit every desk.

18. Organize photography accessories

Use the tiers for small accessories, batteries, and cables. Do not assume the cart is a safe stand for heavy or valuable equipment; assess the load, placement, and stability for the specific gear.

19. Create a mobile charging station

Keep chargers and devices together and route cables so they do not snag when the cart moves. Keep electrical equipment dry, use outlets and power strips according to their own instructions, and avoid overloading them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

20. Make a book or magazine cart

Store current reading and lighter reference material by tier. Books add weight quickly, so account for the accumulated load against both the per-tier and total rating.

21. Add a reversible top-shelf work surface

Explore a fitted tray, board, or lid to create a flatter surface for light tasks. Measure the cart and secure the surface so it cannot shift; the community report about a SAMLA lid documents one fit example, not compatibility with every cart size or lid.

Choose a hack that suits the job

Before committing to an idea or buying add-ons, compare the practical demands of the project:

  • Footprint: Check the dimensions of your specific cart against the available floor, desk, or bedside space.
  • Load: Add up the contents on each tier and across the cart; stay within the listed per-tier and total limits.
  • Permanent changes: Decide whether the project requires drilling, cutting, or another alteration, and verify the component arrangement before modifying the cart.
  • Surface needs: Choose a liner or tray if you need to catch soil or spills, or consider a fitted board if you need a flatter top.
  • Movement: Consider whether you need the cart to travel often or remain parked. Stock lockable castors can hold it in place, but do not make a top-heavy modification inherently stable.
  • Room and contents: Take extra care around food, moisture, children, and valuable electronics; the cart is not approved for food contact, and no hack here establishes a safety rating for those uses.
