The available evidence supports those distinctions, but it does not establish a reliable roster of 22 brands that vanished. Here is what the documented history does show.
Why an old appliance brand can seem to disappear
An appliance company and its brand name have separate histories. A manufacturer may be acquired or absorbed, while the buyer keeps selling appliances under familiar labels. A name may also recede from one country or product category without disappearing everywhere. To say a brand “faded away” accurately, it matters whether the claim is about the original company, the name, or its presence in a particular market.

An academic history of the U.S. white-goods industry describes acquisitions as a way for companies to grow while continuing to use acquired brand names. It reports that Electrolux acquired Tappan in 1981 and White Consolidated Industries in 1986; those dates mark changes in ownership, not proof that the names ended. Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator and White Westinghouse
Electrolux’s corporate timeline says it acquired White Consolidated Industries in 1986 and identifies Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator and White Westinghouse among the brands included. Hotpoint
Hotpoint’s corporate history says the appliance brand was created in 1918 through a merger with General Electric. The company’s page presents the name as continuing today, so Hotpoint is not an example of a brand that simply vanished. The same page credits Hotpoint with milestones including a 1924 all-white enameled electric range, a 1950 “moistureless” electric clothes dryer and a 1953 refrigerator on wheels; these are Hotpoint’s own historical claims. Admiral

What Canadian directories reveal—and what they do not
Government of Canada directories provide a snapshot of appliance labels sold in Canada: a 1980 refrigerator directory lists names such as Admiral, Amana, Beau Mark, Frigidaire, General Electric, Hotpoint, Kelvinator, Kenmore, McClary, Moffat, Roy-Gibson and White-Westinghouse. The records associate selected labels with manufacturers or retailers, including Kelvinator with a WCI Canada division and Kenmore with Simpsons-Sears. A 1981 range directory documents additional names and some manufacturer or retailer links. These are records of presence in Canada at those dates—not a definitive list of brands that later disappeared, and not evidence about every country or product line. Consolidation changed the market
The scale of consolidation helps explain why old names can outlast independent makers. A Stockholm School of Economics dissertation reports that in 1970 four leading groups—Sears (Coldspot and Kenmore), GE (GE and Hotpoint), Whirlpool and Frigidaire—held 60–70% of most major-appliance markets and about 40% of the range market. Can we name 22 brands that faded away?
Not responsibly from the evidence established here. The historical directories confirm that many labels existed at a particular time and place; acquisition records establish ownership changes for some brands. Neither kind of record alone establishes that a name later disappeared. A reliable 22-brand list would need to verify, for each entry, the original maker or retailer, the relevant appliance category and geography, the date and nature of the transition, and whether the name continued under new ownership or elsewhere. Without that case-by-case evidence, presenting 22 names as brands that “faded away” would blur distinct outcomes and risk calling surviving brands extinct.
