1X opened pre-orders for its NEO home humanoid robot on October 28, 2025. As of August 2026, customers can reserve one with a $200 deposit and choose between $20,000 ownership or a $499-per-month subscription. U.S. deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026, but the company has not guaranteed that every pre-order will arrive this year.
What the NEO pre-order actually means
NEO is a bipedal humanoid designed for indoor household use, rather than construction sites, factories or warehouses. The official product page describes a robot intended to navigate homes, retrieve objects, assist with chores, respond to voice commands, schedule tasks through a mobile app and return to its charger.

A reservation is not the same as a completed purchase. Under the pre-order terms, the $200 payment places a customer on a waitlist. 1X may later send an order invitation when a unit becomes available.
Pricing: ownership versus subscription

Both options currently begin with the $200 deposit. The purchase offer does not require an additional subscription according to 1X’s FAQ. At the listed prices, $20,000 is roughly 40.1 months of the $499 monthly plan. That is only arithmetic—not proof that the plans are financially equivalent. The public offer does not clearly establish the subscription’s minimum term, cancellation rules, hardware ownership, damage liability, maintenance obligations or end-of-contract treatment.

Important deposit qualification
The order page labels the deposit “fully refundable,” but the formal terms are more specific. A customer can cancel for a full refund until 14 days after 1X sends an order invitation. After that 14-day period, the deposit becomes non-refundable. 1X may also cancel a pre-order and refund the deposit.
How autonomous is NEO?
NEO should not be described simply as a fully autonomous household worker. 1X says early owners receive basic autonomy, with capabilities expected to improve over time. The product also combines several types of operation:

- Onboard autonomy: the robot performs tasks without continuous human control.
- Learning and updates: 1X says capabilities can expand through use, demonstrations and software development.
- Expert assistance: a scheduled 1X human can remotely supervise unfamiliar chores.
- Remote piloting: owners can pilot NEO through the mobile app and a VR device.
This human-in-the-loop model may help NEO complete tasks that its onboard system cannot yet handle, but it also means performance can depend on connectivity, scheduling, staffing and remote access. Prospective buyers should ask which chores work without assistance, how long Expert sessions typically take, what happens during an internet outage and whether the robot stops safely or returns to its charger when help is unavailable.

What 1X says NEO can do
Company materials describe household navigation, door opening, object retrieval, laundry-related tasks, self-charging, voice conversation and contextual interaction. Demonstrations have included picking up coins, using a screwdriver, installing a light bulb, sorting grapes, pouring tea and wiping surfaces.
In a July 2026 announcement about its updated hands, 1X also showed tasks including LEGO assembly, small-object manipulation, USB-C plugging, tool use and pouring. These are company demonstrations, not an independently verified guarantee that every pre-ordered unit will perform those tasks reliably in every home. Lighting, clutter, wet objects, pets, stairs and unfamiliar room layouts can all change the difficulty substantially.

The same page lists 22 degrees of freedom per hand, seven per arm, three in the neck, two in the spine and six per leg. However, 1X’s July hands announcement describes the new hands as having 25 degrees of freedom each: 22 actuated finger-and-palm degrees plus three wrist degrees. The difference may be a counting convention or an order-page update that has not been harmonized with the newer hardware description. Buyers should confirm which hardware revision they would receive.
Delivery status in 2026
1X’s launch materials said first consumer shipments would occur in 2026, primarily in the United States, with international deliveries beginning later from 2027. Its April 2026 factory update said some customers would receive NEO during 2026 and others later.
That distinction matters: “U.S. deliveries start in 2026” is a company availability target, not a promise that an August 2026 reservation will arrive this year. The Hayward, California facility is described by 1X as operational, with more than 200 employees and initial capacity ramping toward 10,000 units annually. 1X also says that capacity was booked within five days of launch and that it is targeting 100,000 annual units by the end of 2027, including a planned San Carlos facility. These are company-reported figures and targets, not independent production audits.

Safety, privacy and home suitability
1X emphasizes soft outer construction, covered joints, no externally accessible pinch points, low-inertia tendon-driven actuation and backdrivability. The order page nevertheless tells users to follow safety instructions and remain attentive around children, vulnerable people and pets.

Soft materials may reduce some impact and pinch risks, but they do not eliminate falls, dropped objects, unexpected movement, battery hazards or property damage. Before ordering, buyers should request details about applicable safety certifications, emergency-stop behavior, stair operation, collision-force limits, battery safety, insurance and whether unattended operation is permitted.
NEO also has cameras, microphones, memory, Wi-Fi, 5G and remote-control features. A buyer should establish how live audio and video are transmitted, how long home data is stored, whether 1X personnel can view feeds during Expert sessions, whether data is used for model training, how recordings are deleted and what happens when the robot is offline. The privacy policy and pre-order terms should be read together before paying a deposit.

Should you pre-order NEO?
NEO may suit a high-budget early adopter who is interested in robotics, accepts changing capabilities and can tolerate occasional supervision or failure. A home with clear floors, reliable connectivity and controlled access to stairs, pets and fragile objects is a better environment than a crowded or unpredictable one.
It is a poor fit for anyone who needs guaranteed daily cleaning, cooking, laundry or accessibility assistance; expects every demonstration to work immediately; dislikes cameras and remote assistance; or cannot tolerate uncertain delivery and support arrangements.

- Subscription minimum terms, cancellation and ownership rights.

- Parts availability after the three-year ownership warranty.
- Software-support commitments and privacy controls.
Bottom line
1X NEO is a genuine commercial pre-order, not merely a research prototype, but the transaction is still an early-access commitment. The $20,000 option buys stated ownership, warranty and support benefits; the $499 plan lowers the upfront cost but has important unresolved contractual details. The $200 deposit reserves a place in a waitlist, and its refundability ends 14 days after an order invitation. Most importantly, NEO is presented as a combination of basic autonomy, ongoing learning, scheduled human assistance and remote control—not a proven robot that independently performs every household chore. Its value will depend on delivery execution, autonomy, privacy and support as much as on its humanoid hardware.
