The number is a curated selection, not a formal botanical list: most familiar houseplant pothos are cultivars of Epipremnum aureum, and individual names do not all refer to separate species. Choose by the leaf look you want, then account for light and growth differences where they are documented.
How to choose among pothos types
Start with foliage color and pattern. Solid green and green-on-green selections give a quieter look; yellow or chartreuse leaves brighten a display; white or silvery markings create stronger contrast. Light also matters: general pothos guidance favors filtered or bright indirect light, while prolonged low light can reduce variegation. The descriptions below focus on traits documented by university and extension sources, rather than treating every nursery name as a separate species.

18 pothos types to consider
1. Golden Pothos
Green leaves marked with yellow or golden variegation make this a classic choice for a patterned trailing plant. Its yellow markings distinguish it from solid-green Jade and bright, mostly yellow-green Neon.

2. Global Green
This patented E. aureum selection has dark green margins around lighter green centers. Creamy-white markings may appear occasionally, adding variation to its predominantly green-on-green pattern.

3. Jade
Jade has solid dark-green foliage without the variegation seen in Golden or Marble Queen. UW–Madison Extension notes that it does well in lower-light areas, making it an option when a mostly green look is the goal.
4. Lemon Meringue
A patented sport of Global Green, Lemon Meringue has green leaves edged in golden yellow to light green. Stronger light can make the yellow edges brighter.
5. Lime
Lime is identified by bright yellow-green leaves. It offers a more uniform, luminous color than the contrasting green-and-yellow pattern of Golden Pothos.

Marble Queen has green leaves or stems streaked and marbled with white. The amount and placement of the white pattern can vary across leaves.
7. Neon
Neon is known for yellow or bright chartreuse foliage. Color descriptions vary slightly among references, so compare the plant itself with the label when buying rather than relying on a single exact shade name.
8. Pearls and Jade® (‘UFM12’)
This cultivar has white and silvery-gray variegation, often near the leaf edges. UW–Madison Extension describes it as slower growing and smaller-leaved than many other pothos varieties, a useful distinction if you want a more compact-looking plant.

9. Tricolor
Tricolor is described as having off-white stems and leaves with white variegation. The available extension description does not establish a more precise pattern, so check the individual plant for the balance of white and green.
10. N’Joy
North Carolina State Extension lists N’Joy among E. aureum cultivars and varieties. The source does not give a detailed trait description, so use the cultivar label as identification rather than assuming a particular variegation pattern.
11. Snow Queen
Snow Queen is also listed by North Carolina State Extension among E. aureum varieties. A detailed source-backed distinction from Marble Queen is not established here; compare the plant’s actual markings instead of assuming the two names guarantee a specific difference.
12. Ivory Knight
UF/IFAS describes Ivory Knight as having a broad white center with yellow-green streaks, rich green margins, and stems streaked white and green. Its leaves are larger than those of some other pothos cultivars.
13. Marble Prince
Derived from Marble Queen, Marble Prince has consistent marbled green and bright-white coloration. UF/IFAS also describes short internodes and smaller, narrow, elongated leaves.
14. Neon Queen
Neon Queen originated from Golden Pothos. UF/IFAS describes narrow light-green leaves outlined by yellow venation, yellow stems, and a semi-compact trailing habit.

15. Hawaiian Pothos
In a UF/IFAS cultivar table reflecting varieties available in Florida in 2002, Hawaiian Pothos is described as having more striking yellow coloration than Golden. That comparison is historical, not a current assessment of retail availability.
16. Cebu Blue
Cebu Blue is a different species, Epipremnum pinnatum, not an E. aureum cultivar. North Carolina State Extension classifies it under that separate species. It belongs in a broad collection of plants sold as pothos, but should not be presented as another Golden Pothos relative.
17. Pearls and Jade-derived selections
When shopping, you may encounter plants labeled with additional names or selection labels alongside Pearls and Jade. Treat those labels as distinct only when the seller or a reliable botanical reference identifies the selection and its traits; a similar-looking leaf alone does not establish a separate cultivar.

There is no authoritative botanical inventory fixed at exactly 18. For a collection list, a nursery-identified E. aureum selection can fill this place if its name and distinguishing traits are reliably documented. Confirm both before treating it as a separate type; an unverified market name is not enough to support a useful comparison.

UW–Madison Extension says pothos does best in filtered light, and North Carolina State Extension describes bright indirect light while noting tolerance of long periods in lower light. For variegated selections, light is part of the appearance decision: lower light can reduce variegation. These are general species-level care notes, not a guarantee that every cultivar responds identically.
Let the soil surface or well-drained growing medium dry somewhat before watering. Avoid a rigid calendar schedule that ignores the pot, room conditions, or how quickly the medium dries.
Rank #4
- Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates medium-light indoor environments
- Water when soil begins to dry; thrives in loose, well-draining potting soil
- Great for year-round indoor growing, with most active growth during spring and summer
- Hardy outdoors in USDA Zones 10-12; ideal as houseplants elsewhere
- Plants and animals make everything better, from simply raising our spirits to enriching our everyday lives. That’s why a portion of every purchase is directed to our mission to help place shelter animals in happy homes.
UW–Madison Extension says pothos can be propagated from cuttings or by air-layering, and describes rooting in water or vermiculite in 3–4 weeks. The stated timing is general guidance, not a cultivar-specific promise.

Recent cultivar development
On June 11, 2025, UF/IFAS reported that environmental horticulture professor Jianjun Chen secured patents for Ivory Knight, Marble Prince, and Neon Queen. The report documents the cultivars and their traits; it does not establish that every retail nursery stocks them. Chen said, “I’m grateful for the support that made this possible,” and added, “The development of these pothos cultivars reflect our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the foliage plant industry.”
UF/IFAS also reported a historical figure from USDA Floriculture Crops Statistics: pothos had a wholesale value of $22.89 million in 2018. This is a dated industry value, not a current market-size estimate.
Safety and Florida-specific guidance
UW–Madison Extension says pothos contains calcium oxalate, is toxic if ingested in large quantities, and its sap may irritate skin. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets, and use care when handling it.
For Florida residents, UF/IFAS reported in 2025 that pothos is a Category II invasive species in Florida and advises keeping it indoors—not planting it outdoors or using it as ground cover. This is Florida-specific guidance; check local authorities for current rules in your area.
