Micro clover is a small-leaved selection of white clover that homeowners usually add to grass rather than plant as a stand-alone lawn. It can help supply nitrogen and provide flowers for pollinators, but it still needs suitable sun, moisture, mowing and weed control. Whether it fits depends on your climate, grass species and tolerance for seasonal changes and bee activity.
What micro clover is
Micro clover is not a separate grass species. The name refers to small-leaved, lower-growing selections of white clover (Trifolium repens), including βPirouetteβ and βPipolinaβ. Compared with Dutch white clover, these selections have smaller leaves, fewer flowers and a less aggressive, clump-forming habit. Check the seed label for the variety: βmicrocloverβ alone does not establish which cultivar or mixture is inside.

It is most often used as one component of a mixed lawn. The University of Maryland Extension says current research does not support it as the sole groundcover or lawn alternative in Maryland. A seed supplier also advises against establishing a new lawn with white clover alone. Those qualifications are regional and source-specific, but the available guidance supports treating micro clover as a grass-lawn companion, not a proven universal turf replacement.
Why add it to a lawn?
It can contribute nitrogen
Like other legumes, clover forms a relationship with Rhizobium bacteria that helps convert atmospheric nitrogen into organic nitrogen usable by plants. Nitrogen in clippings and decaying plant material can benefit nearby turf and may reduce fertilizer applications. It does not guarantee a fertilizer-free lawn; the amount of benefit depends on the lawn and its growing conditions. See Maryland Extensionβs overview of lawns and microclover and University of Illinois Extensionβs homeowner guidance.

- SEASONAL FLOWERING: Outsidepride MiniClover produces charming white flowers for about one month during summer if it is not mowed, adding seasonal beauty and visual interest to your lawn. Each flower may attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, supporting biodiversity while creating pollinator-friendly ground cover in USDA Zones 3-10.
It can offer flowers for pollinators
Micro clover flowers provide food for bees and other pollinators. That may be a welcome feature, but flowering can be a drawback if you want a flower-free play area or someone using the lawn has a sting allergy. Mowing can limit flowers, though it also changes the appearance and maintenance needs of the mix.
It may help compete with weeds
A well-established clover-and-grass mix can compete with weeds and may reduce the need for herbicide. The trade-off is important: many broadleaf lawn herbicides also kill clover. If you routinely use broadleaf weed control, micro clover may not be compatible with that lawn-care approach.

How it compares with grass-only turf and ordinary white clover
| Consideration | Micro clover in a grass mix | Grass-only turf | Ordinary white clover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrogen | Can contribute nitrogen through fixation and clippings; fertilizer needs may fall, but are not necessarily eliminated. | Does not fix nitrogen; fertilizer needs depend on the grass and site. | Can also fix nitrogen, but typically has larger leaves and more flowers than microclover selections. |
| Appearance and growth | Smaller leaves and fewer flowers than Dutch white clover; needs mowing to retain a low, βmicroβ look. | Appearance and mowing needs depend on the grass species and desired height. | More visible flowers and a more pronounced clover appearance. |
| Climate and shade | Can struggle in high heat, drought and shade; may thin or lose top growth in winter. | Varies by species and region; select a locally suitable grass. | The available guidance does not establish a universal comparison for heat, drought or shade tolerance. |
| Herbicides | Many broadleaf herbicides also kill clover. | Some broadleaf herbicide programs are designed for grass lawns; check the product label. | Many broadleaf herbicides also kill clover. |
| Seed availability | Specialty seed may be expensive or harder to find in retail stores; availability changes. | Grass seed is commonly sold in species- and region-specific mixes. | Availability and price vary by seller. |
This is a practical comparison, not a guarantee that a particular mix will perform the same across regions. Grass species, climate, irrigation, mowing and the look you want all matter.

When micro clover may not fit
- Hot or dry conditions: University Extension guidance cautions that micro clover does not tolerate high heat or drought well. A Michigan Extension response warns that summers without irrigation can kill it.
- Shade: It tends to perform poorly in shaded sites.
- Winter appearance: It can lose visible top growth in winter, leaving thin or bare areas that may need reseeding.
- Frequent broadleaf weed treatment: Many products that control broadleaf weeds also damage or kill clover.
- Flower-free surfaces: Flowers attract pollinators, which may conflict with allergy concerns or a preference for a uniform, flower-free lawn.
- Minimal mowing: It does not stay miniature without mowing. Colorado State University turfgrass specialist Tony Koski notes that if left unmown, it can grow tall and look like regular white clover.
Choosing a grass mix and seed rate
There is no single universally established grass-seed ratio in the cited Extension guidance. A 2020 Montana State University Extension response reporting on University of Maryland trials says blends with 5% and 10% microclover by weight mixed acceptably with tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. In those trials, microclover dominated chewings fescue and hard fescue. The response notes that rates or regional conditions may account for the difference and says more work is needed. These trial results are not a universal recipe; they are a reason to check compatibility with your grass species and local advice.

For practical rates, keep the source and use case attached to the number:
- Overseeding an existing lawn: DLF Pickseed USAβs 2024 supplier management guide recommends 1 lb of microclover seed per 1,000 sq ft. This is supplier guidance, not a universal Extension standard.
- Starting a new grass mix: The same DLF guide recommends microclover at 5% of total grass-seed weight for an improved turfgrass mix and does not recommend establishing a lawn with white clover alone.
Follow the seed product label and locally relevant Extension advice rather than combining these figures into one prescription. The right mix depends on your grass, region and intended lawn appearance.

How to seed and establish it
Overseed an existing lawn
- Choose a suitable time. University of Illinois Extensionβs 2022 homeowner guidance recommends sowing from early spring to late summer. DLF Pickseed USAβs 2024 supplier guide suggests early fall or late spring to early summer for overseeding; use locally relevant timing and the seed label for your area.
- Prepare the turf. Mow the existing grass low, rake, and core aerate so seed can reach the soil rather than sit on a dense canopy. DLF also recommends low mowing or aeration before sowing.
- Spread seed evenly. Broadcast it by hand or with a spreader, using the rate on the product label or a locally suitable recommendation. For existing lawns, DLFβs supplier guide gives the rate stated above.
- Keep the seedbed moist. Illinois Extension recommends daily watering for the first 7β10 days so soil stays moist during germination. DLFβs guide says to keep seed consistently moist until establishment, which it says usually takes 2β3 weeks. These are recommendations from different sources and should not be treated as a single guaranteed timetable.
- Water as needed after establishment. DLF recommends occasional watering during dry spells once established. The plant can still thin or fail in prolonged heat or drought.
Set a realistic mowing routine
DLF says micro clover may reach 6β8 inches if left unmown and suggests mowing once or twice a year to improve uniformity in a reduced-mow mix. That is supplier guidance, not a promise of a no-mow lawn. The grass species in the blend also affects mowing needs; mowing more often may keep clover shorter but can reduce flowers.

It can reduce some inputs in a suitable grass mix, but βlow maintenanceβ does not mean βno maintenance.β Establishment requires reliable moisture, mowing affects whether it stays low and uniform, drought or winter thinning may require reseeding, and broadleaf herbicide choices become more limited. Illinois Extension horticulture educator Nicole Flowers-Kimmerle has described microclover as a potentially sustainable lawn addition and said clover-containing clippings can be a natural organic nitrogen source that may reduce how often nitrogen is applied. That is a potential benefit, not a guarantee of zero fertilizer or care.

A quick fit check
- Choose a mixed lawn rather than assuming a pure microclover stand will perform as turf.
- Check that the site gets enough sun and that you can water during establishment and dry spells.
- Confirm that the clover cultivar and grass species suit your region; do not assume a rate that worked in one trial fits every mix.
- Decide whether flowers and bee activity are acceptable, especially around play areas or where sting allergies are a concern.
- Make sure your weed-control plan does not rely on broadleaf herbicides that kill clover.
- Accept mowing, possible reseeding and seasonal thinning as part of the choice.
