Can You Recharge Vehicle AC With Propane? Safety and EPA Guidance

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No—do not recharge a motor vehicle air-conditioning system with propane. In the United States, the EPA says propane and other hydrocarbon refrigerants are unacceptable for MVAC use under its Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program. They are highly flammable and can create fire or explosion risks. This article covers vehicle AC; home and other AC systems have different requirements.

Why propane is not suitable for vehicle AC

Propane is a hydrocarbon refrigerant. The EPA says no hydrocarbon refrigerants are listed as acceptable for motor vehicle air-conditioning (MVAC) use, and warns that charging an MVAC with one can cause fire or explosion, injury, and property damage. The agency’s guidance is at EPA’s hydrocarbon refrigerants page.

Vehicle AC systems are not interchangeable with equipment designed to use flammable refrigerants. The EPA has separately warned against propane-based products marketed for existing home AC systems that were not designed for flammable refrigerants; that warning does not make propane suitable for a vehicle system. See the EPA’s 2016 warning.

What U.S. EPA rules mean for vehicle owners

EPA’s SNAP program classifies MVAC refrigerant substitutes as acceptable subject to use conditions or unacceptable. EPA says all flammable refrigerants other than HFC-152a and HFO-1234yf are unacceptable for new and retrofit MVAC systems; those two exceptions have conditions and are not blanket drop-in recommendations. EPA states that using a refrigerant listed as unacceptable is illegal. Check the agency’s acceptable refrigerants and use conditions page for its system-specific guidance.

A can’s label, a claim that its contents are a “drop-in” substitute, or a fitting adapter does not establish compatibility. EPA warns that hydrocarbon products may be marketed as substitutes for R-134a or R-1234yf without clearly identifying their contents or risks. SNAP-approved MVAC refrigerants use unique fittings to reduce accidental mixing; EPA says adapters should not be used to convert a fitting.

What to do if propane may already be in the system

  1. Stop adding refrigerant. Do not rely on a consumer can or adapter to continue servicing the system, and do not vent refrigerant.
  2. Contact a qualified professional. EPA recommends contacting a Section 609-certified technician at an auto repair shop or a state or local fire marshal. Its Section 609 information explains certification and refrigerant-handling requirements for people servicing MVAC systems for payment.
  3. Share the product history. Tell the technician or fire marshal the product or refrigerant identity, how much was added if known, where it was purchased, when it was added, and why.
  4. Let equipped professionals decide how to handle it. EPA notes that equipment designed and approved for flammable refrigerants is available to technicians or fire marshals to help safely remove refrigerant. This is not a DIY recovery procedure.

How to get the AC repaired correctly

The right refrigerant depends on the vehicle and the system’s history. Read the refrigerant information on the vehicle label and have a qualified shop verify the system and its service history; the refrigerant used by another vehicle or named on a recharge can is not a reliable guide. EPA says a vehicle may be retrofitted only with substitutes approved under SNAP for retrofit use.

ZeroR AC Recharge Kit R134a Replacement – Eco-Friendly Refrigerant Gas with 24-Inch Charging Hose Tool for SSV Cans, 2-Cans
  • R134a Replacement - Hydrocarbon blend that is 100% natural, safe for the ozone and non global warming. Chemically compatible with R134a systems.
  • 6oz (11.7 fl oz) Cans - Compressed gas is measured by weight. This gas is light weight compared to others, but has the same "volume". Guaranteed that you will use no more than normal
  • SSV Cans - Self Sealing Valve allows for the storage of unused gas. Requires SSV compatible tool. Avoid "piercing" style tools or the gas may come out slowly or not at all.
  • Disclosures - Product is flammable like many other modern refrigerants. Observe all precautions on the product lablel when handling and storing. Follow all legal requirements when charging your system. Hydrocarbon blend refrigerant for NON MVAC use in 6oz SSV Cans.

Ask the shop to diagnose the cooling fault and check for leaks before deciding what service is needed. EPA’s MVAC servicing guidance covers recharge and retrofit options, but it cannot determine the correct refrigerant or repair for a vehicle without its specific details. EPA’s Section 609 rules require people servicing MVAC systems for payment to be trained and certified through an EPA-approved program and to use certified refrigerant-handling equipment.

If you meant home air conditioning

This guidance is specifically about U.S. motor vehicle AC. Do not infer that propane is safe for a home system: EPA has warned against propane-based refrigerants in existing home AC equipment that was not designed for flammable refrigerants. Consult the equipment manufacturer and a qualified HVAC professional for system-specific advice.
