The cheapest DIY greenhouse depends on what you already have and what you need it to do. A low cold frame made from reclaimed windows can protect seedlings; a PVC hoop cover can shelter a garden bed; a walk-in greenhouse needs a more substantial frame, covering, anchoring and ventilation. These are different structures, not interchangeable versions of the same project—and there is no reliable universal build price for them.
Choose the right kind of structure first
A cold frame is a low, usually unheated box with a clear cover. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes it as “a raised bottomless box with clear covers that acts much like a small greenhouse.” It can protect seedlings and transplants and help acclimate them outdoors, but it is not a heated, walk-in growing space. A hoop cover spans a bed and can provide seasonal protection; a larger hoop house gives more room but also needs a stronger, well-anchored structure. Iowa State Extension’s cold-frame guide and University of Maryland Extension’s greenhouse overview explain the distinction.

To choose economically, start with your actual goal, available footprint and materials. Salvaged windows and lumber may reduce purchases if they fit together and are safe to use. A small PVC hoop cover uses a different set of materials, while a larger greenhouse requires more structural planning. The sources do not establish current, comparable prices for these designs, so treat the ideas below as starting points rather than cost-ranked plans.

Cold frames from salvage
- Window-sash cold frame. Build a low box around a salvaged window sash. Let the sash dimensions determine the box size, and make sure the cover can be opened for access and temperature management.
- Shower-door cold frame. Use a suitable clear shower-door panel as the cover for a low frame. Size the frame to the panel rather than trying to cut or force a fit; account for the panel’s weight and safe handling.
- Clear-plastic cold frame. Cover a simple low box with clear plastic or another durable clear sheet. Provide a way to open the cover so you can reach plants and manage heat.
- Salvaged-window propagation box. Dedicate a cold frame to seedlings and transplants that need protection while they acclimate outdoors.
- Rigid-panel cold frame. Use a suitable rigid plastic sheet or fiberglass panel already on hand as the cover. Build the frame around the actual panel size.
- Scrap-wood cold frame. Assemble the box from available lumber and top it with an old window. Check the wood and glazing before building, and make the lid accessible for ventilation.
- Salvaged-door cold frame. Adapt a clear door panel as the top of a low frame if it is appropriate for the job and can be handled safely. Iowa State Extension lists shower doors among possible recycled cold-frame covers.
- Seed-starting enclosure. Use a cold-frame form to shelter young seedlings and help harden off transplants. Do not assume an unheated box will keep tender crops warm through winter.
- Cold frame as a first-stage greenhouse. If your immediate need is seedling protection or modest season extension, begin with a small cold frame instead of building a walk-in space you may not need.
For cold-frame guidance and potential cover materials, see Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and University of Vermont Extension.
Hoops and low tunnels
- Raised-bed PVC mini hoop. Bend flexible half-inch PVC over a raised bed and cover the hoops for seasonal protection. University of Georgia Extension describes this as a simple, economical low-hoop approach.
- Row-cover hoop tunnel. Put hoops over a bed and use row-cover fabric when your goal is frost protection rather than a greenhouse enclosure. The cover material should suit the protection you need.
- Portable mini hoop tunnel. Make a short, movable version of the raised-bed hoop structure for a narrow bed. Keep the design light enough to move while securing it for the conditions at your site.
- Seasonal low tunnel with removable cover. Reuse a hoop framework and remove or roll back its covering when conditions allow. Plan secure attachment and a practical way to ventilate it.
See University of Georgia Extension’s low-hoop guidance for the bed-cover approach.

Backyard greenhouse structures
- PVC-and-film backyard hoop house. Use a wooden base or frame, PVC bows and greenhouse film for a small backyard structure. North Carolina State University Extension provides a documented example in its small-backyard greenhouse guide.
- Reclaimed-lumber and window greenhouse. Frame around windows you already have, making the design fit their actual sizes. University of Vermont Extension suggests checking local community listings for materials.
- Lean-to against a suitable existing wall. A lean-to can use less freestanding framing, but only if the wall and location suit the project. Check light access and provide ventilation; the available guidance does not supply a specific plan or cost for this design.
- Larger PVC-bow structure with film. Scale up a PVC-bow concept only after considering local wind, snow and anchoring requirements. Do not assume a small-structure example establishes safe dimensions or load capacity for a larger build.
- Mixed reclaimed-material greenhouse. Combine suitable reused windows, lumber and other components, letting the salvage determine the layout. Check that materials are compatible and can be joined and maintained safely.
Match materials to the project
Clear covers for cold frames
Use a cover that fits the frame and can be opened when needed. Salvaged windows, shower doors, rigid plastic sheets and fiberglass are possible cold-frame cover materials identified by Iowa State Extension. Reclaimed materials can reduce purchases, but their dimensions, condition and handling requirements will shape the design.
Greenhouse film for hoop houses
For its small greenhouse, NC State Extension says clear 4- or 6-mil greenhouse film is generally best when the structure is used for growing plants. That is a material recommendation, not a brand endorsement or a current price comparison. Greenhouse film is relatively inexpensive but can tear, according to Washington State University Extension; plan for secure attachment and possible repair or replacement.

- 【Upgraded Structure Advantage】This greenhouse is enhanced with heavy duty ground spikes and a reinforced aluminum frame to create a strong, secure setup for your garden. The upgraded anchoring system helps hold the structure firmly on different surfaces, while the sturdy frame offers great support in changing weather. Designed for long-term use, it helps you build a reliable growing area for vegetables, flowers, and herbs in your backyard or garden space
- 【Fast, Easy Assembly】The greenhouse uses a slide-in panel system that makes installation more straightforward and efficient. Panels are designed to glide into the frame, reducing the time and effort needed during setup. Clear, simple steps guide you through the process, so you can get your growing area ready more quickly. Once assembled, the structure offers improved steadiness, creating a dependable space for your daily gardening work and seasonal planting plans
- 【Solid PC Panels】High-performance polycarbonate panels provide a balance of strength and light transmission, helping create a stable environment for plant growth. These panels are designed to handle everyday outdoor use while allowing enough light in for seedlings and mature plants. At the same time, they help reduce harsh UV exposure, creating a more controlled setting for gardening. This design works well for both new and experienced gardeners across different regions
- 【Stable Base Options】The base feet of the greenhouse can be anchored in multiple ways to increase stability in wind and snow. You can bury them directly in soil, set them into a concrete base, or attach them to wooden planks using screws, depending on your yard conditions. This flexibility makes it easier to adapt the structure to various outdoor surfaces and climates, helping keep the greenhouse in place and giving added security during changing seasons and weather patterns
- 【User-Friendly Details】Thoughtful details make daily use and maintenance easier. Rain gutters on both sides guide water away from the frame, which helps manage runoff during rain or snow. A smooth sliding door offers easy access when you are carrying trays, tools, or pots, and the lockable handle helps manage entry. Adjustable roof vents support continuous airflow, allowing you to control temperature and humidity levels so your plants receive fresh air and a more balanced growing environment
Keep PVC from touching greenhouse polyethylene film: University of Illinois Extension warns that contact can cause the film to degrade quickly. Use a suitable separation method for the materials and design you select.

Place it for the growing season
Choose the site and orientation around the season when you expect to use the structure most. The Royal Horticultural Society’s greenhouse selection guidance recommends orienting a greenhouse for its main season of use. A wall-mounted or bed-cover design also needs enough light for the plants and access for tending them.

- All-Season Protection-Designed for year-round use, this outdoor greenhouse 4x6 shields plants from harsh elements. Its UV protection panels and ventilation system help regulate temperature, while the heavy-duty frame protects your garden from wind, snow, and rain
Make ventilation practical
Any clear enclosure can heat up, so design for convenient opening rather than treating the cover as permanently closed. The RHS notes that automatic openers respond slowly; manual ventilation remains useful. This matters especially for cold frames, where an accessible lid is part of everyday use.
Account for local exposure
Wind, snow and site conditions affect what framing and anchoring are suitable. The extension guidance cited here does not provide one universal engineering specification for every location or size. For a larger structure, use local building or agricultural guidance rather than assuming a design that works elsewhere will be safe on your site.
