Whether you need more storage, a place for stools, or simply a better-looking work surface, an IKEA-based island can be adapted to suit your kitchen. These 17 ideas range from quick cosmetic updates to builds involving cabinetry, plumbing, or a cooktop. Choose by footprint and purpose first, then check that the materials and attachment method suit the way you plan to use the island.
17 IKEA kitchen island ideas
1. Add custom side panels
Cover plain or unfinished sides with wood or another panel material to add texture and give the island a more finished appearance. Check the panel dimensions and how it will attach to your cabinet system before cutting or ordering.
2. Paint the island
Paint can make an existing base feel more intentional. Match nearby cabinets for a coordinated look or use a contrasting color to make the island stand out. Prepare the surface and choose products suitable for the cabinet material and the wear it will receive.
3. Extend the counter for stools
A wider worktop or supported overhang can create room for casual seating. Plan the overhang around the stools and the space people need to sit and move; do not assume the cabinet base alone supports an extended top.

4. Build a modular storage island
Combine kitchen cabinets to fit the room and the storage you need. This is a more involved project than repainting or changing hardware: plan the layout, cabinet dimensions, finished sides, countertop, and secure attachment before assembly.
5. Change the cabinet fronts
Compatible replacement doors and drawer fronts can update the island without replacing its cabinet boxes. Confirm the exact IKEA cabinet system and dimensions before ordering fronts; compatibility is not universal across systems.
6. Give it a stone-look or marble top
A marble slab can dress up a cart or island base. Consider the top’s dimensions, weight, support, and intended use before choosing it. A stone or stone-look surface is not a substitute for checking that the base can safely carry it.

7. Make cookbook cubbies
Use open shelves, a bookcase-style base, or modular cabinets to keep cookbooks visible and easy to reach. Keep the cubbies where they will not interfere with seating or the island’s work area.
8. Integrate an induction cooktop
A cooktop turns the island into a cooking zone, but the idea requires more than cutting an opening in a worktop. The cited roundup does not specify appliance installation requirements; use the chosen appliance’s instructions and arrange qualified installation where required.
9. Mix cabinet bases and legs
Pair storage cabinets on one side with an open, leg-supported seating side beneath a connecting top. This can preserve cupboard space while leaving knee room, but the top and supports need to be planned as one stable assembly.

10. Repurpose a bookcase
One approach is to turn a bookcase on its side, add legs, and fit a top. Treat this as inspiration rather than a structural recommendation: confirm that the particular bookcase, its orientation, and its attachment method are suitable for the loads and use you expect.
11. Add an overhead rack
An overhead rack can keep pots, pans, and tools within reach and free up cabinet space. Plan its position so it does not obstruct movement or collide with the work area, and use appropriate fixings for the mounting surface.

13. Hide a trash can
Fit a pullout bin inside a suitable cabinet or drawer to keep waste out of sight while cooking. Check the available interior dimensions and door or drawer operation before selecting the bin.
14. Add wine crates

16. Pair two islands
Where the room has enough space, two matching units can add work surface and storage. Lay out both units with doors, drawers, stools, and walking routes in use before deciding that the arrangement fits.
17. Add finishing touches
Overhead greenery or string lights, candles, and stool cushions can make an island feel more personal. Keep decorations clear of cooking heat, work surfaces, and routes through the kitchen.

Ideal Home also describes a version with a wood worktop, castors, a hanging rail, and display storage. These are inspiration builds, not tested structural recommendations: the cited accounts do not establish load ratings or validate every KALLAX configuration for food preparation, leaning, or heavy equipment. Check the dimensions and attachment details of the exact unit and additions you plan to use.
When a mobile trolley makes more sense
If a fixed island would crowd the kitchen, a trolley can be easier to reposition. A mobile DIY unit still needs to remain stable during use.

Choose a hack that fits your kitchen and skill level
- Start with the footprint. Check that cabinet doors and drawers can open and that people can pass, sit, and work around the island. An attractive layout is not useful if it blocks the kitchen’s everyday routes.
- Decide the island’s main job. A prep surface, storage hub, seating spot, cooking zone, and sink station have different layout and installation needs. Choose the primary job before selecting a base.
- Choose the storage style. Closed cupboards and pullouts hide supplies; open shelves, cookbook cubbies, rails, and crates make selected items accessible or visible.
- Balance mobility and stability. Casters allow repositioning, but a mobile unit must stay steady when used. IKEA UK advises securing a kitchen island to the floor to prevent tipping. Review IKEA UK’s island safety guidance and follow the instructions for the specific unit.
- Match the project to your DIY comfort. Paint, handles, and decorative details are relatively straightforward updates. A modular cabinet build takes more planning, while a sink or cooktop can involve plumbing, appliance requirements, and professional installation.
- Verify compatibility and materials. Check the exact cabinet system, dimensions, countertop support, fixings, and local product availability before buying. A finish that looks coordinated does not prove that a front or panel fits.
