The IKEA KURA is a reversible bed that can be set up low or as a loft, making it a useful starting point for storage, play space, or a themed room. Here are 16 documented project ideas to adapt—not a standardized IKEA set or a claim that every build fits every KURA model. Before planning, check your local bed’s measurements and keep IKEA’s safety guidance in view.

What to know before choosing a KURA hack

KURA’s reversible frame can be assembled as a low bed or loft bed, giving the area below the sleeping surface different uses. The examples below range from cosmetic changes to substantial structural alterations; they are project inspiration, not IKEA-endorsed or tested designs.

For the US Twin KURA listing, IKEA gives overall dimensions of 78 3/8 in long, 41 3/8 in wide, and 45 5/8 in high; the space under the loft is 32 5/8 in high. The listing specifies a maximum load of 220 lb and a mattress measuring 74 3/8 by 38 in, with maximum thickness of 5 1/8 in. These are market- and model-specific figures, so check the item listing and instructions for your country before designing around them. IKEA US KURA product details.

IKEA says loft beds and the upper bed of bunk or loft beds are unsuitable for children under 6 because of fall risk. Its product safety guidance also says not to attach hooks or handles to the bed or hang ropes or belts where children could get caught. Custom additions—especially climbing features, slides, raised structures, or hanging fabric—need careful assessment against the bed instructions and the room’s actual conditions; the project examples below are not evidence that a modification is safe. Ideas that add storage or another sleeping spot

1. Fit storage drawers beneath the bed

Use the open area under a low KURA for drawers, adapting the layout to the available clearance and access. Apartment Therapy’s gallery includes under-bed drawer storage, while IKEA Hackers documents a KURA project combined with MALM storage drawers and slats. These are examples of separate builds, not a promise that the components fit every room or bed configuration.

2. Add shelves under the sleeping surface

Open shelves can keep books, toys, or baskets accessible without the footprint of a separate cabinet. Apartment Therapy’s gallery shows shelving beneath KURA; plan shelf placement so it does not obstruct the ladder, bed access, or the room’s usable circulation.

3. Build a storage bunk with drawers and steps

One IKEA Hackers project combines a bunk-style arrangement with drawers and steps, using the approach to make the route up part of the storage design. This is a more involved alteration than adding loose storage: assess the structure, dimensions, and manufacturer instructions before attempting it.

  • Solid Wood Construction for Durability: Constructed from premium wood material, this low bunk bed is built to last. The sturdy materials ensure that the bed remains stable and durable with respect to wear and tear, while the smooth gray finish adds a modern touch to any room. The bed slats enhances its load-bearing capacity, ensuring both safety and durability for everyday use.
  • Reliable Safety Features: Safety is a top priority with this floor bunk bed's design. This twin bunk bed includes full-length guardrails on the upper bunk to avoid accidental falls and a built-in 3-step ladder that securely attaches to the bed, ensuring easy and stable access. This design feature minimizes wobbling and improves the overall security of the bed for your children.
  • Convertible Design for Versatility: This versatile wooden bunk bed features a convertible design, offering multiple uses to fit your family's needs. The bottom bed can be adapted to function as a twin loft, providing space underneath for play, storage, or even additional sleeping arrangements. Alternatively, it can be configured as a twin floor bunk bed, making it suitable for families with one or two children and allowing for creative use of space.
  • Space-Efficient for Small Rooms: Ideal for compact living spaces, this low bunk bed twin over twin optimizes room usage while providing comfortable sleeping arrangements for two. Its compact size is suitable for children's bedrooms, dorms, and other compact spaces. The minimal footprint ensures that you can maximize the usable area of the room while still accommodating two sleepers.
  • Simple Assembly with Clear Instructions: This low bunk bed is designed to make assembly a breeze. The process is streamlined with detailed instructions that clearly outline each step. All necessary components are included, making the setup straightforward and easy, allowing you to focus more on enjoying the new addition to your space.

4. Use TROFAST as steps and storage

An IKEA Hackers example places a TROFAST shelving unit alongside KURA as both steps and storage. It is a specific project, not a general instruction that a storage unit can safely serve as a ladder; do not assume the unit provides a suitable climbing surface or structural support.

5. Add a pull-out third bed

A documented KURA conversion incorporates a pull-out third bed, creating an extra sleeping place that can be tucked away when not in use. This changes the sleeping arrangement and requires checking the available floor space, clearances, and the construction details of the individual design.

Ideas that turn KURA into a play zone

6. Make a LEGO building station

Arrange a LEGO building area above a low sleeping setup, keeping bricks and builds on a defined surface. The example offers a way to dedicate the bed’s upper area to play, but make sure the sleeping space remains practical and that small pieces can be managed appropriately for the child using the room.

7. Create a slide and secret-door play zone

One KURA project adds a slide and a secret-door feature to make the bed area feel like a play space. A slide is a substantial modification, not a routine accessory: consider its structure, landing area, clearances, and supervision rather than treating an inspiration photo as a build plan.

8. Put a felt playhouse under the loft

Use felt panels or fabric to create a small den beneath the raised bed. Keep the enclosure arranged so a child can enter and leave freely, and avoid ropes, belts, or attached hooks that conflict with IKEA’s safety warning.

9. Convert the frame into a playhouse

An IKEA Hackers example turns the KURA frame itself into a playhouse. A simple facade or soft interior treatment can define the space without necessarily requiring a new sleeping level; choose materials and attachments with the bed’s safety guidance and access needs in mind.

10. Add a climbing wall at the bed end

A climbing wall at the end of the bed is one of the more ambitious documented concepts. It changes how a child moves around the furniture and involves substantial structural modification. The roundup does not establish that this design has been tested or is safe; do not rely on a photo alone to determine anchoring, fall protection, or compatibility with the bed.

Ideas for a themed or decorative look

11. Paint panels for a custom color scheme

Painted panels are among the less complex ways to give the bed a new look. Apartment Therapy’s gallery includes painted KURA examples; use a finish suitable for the material and follow its product directions, while keeping changes from interfering with assembly or inspection.

12. Add wood slats for a tree-house feel

Wood slats can suggest a tree-house exterior, an effect shown in Apartment Therapy’s gallery. This adds material to the frame, so consider weight, fastening, edges, and access before building rather than assuming decorative additions are structurally neutral.

13. Make a curtain-front den

Curtains can soften the area beneath a loft and make it feel tucked away. Apartment Therapy includes curtain and fabric-surround examples. Keep fabric clear of climbing routes and avoid hanging ropes or belts where a child could become caught.

14. Create a house facade

A house-shaped facade can turn the bed into a play cottage or small room-within-a-room. The older Apartment Therapy gallery includes house-front treatments; a simple visual panel is a different undertaking from adding a load-bearing structure, so make that distinction when choosing a plan.

15. Give it a vehicle theme

The current IKEA Hackers roundup includes both trash-truck and fire-truck looks. These demonstrate how paint, shaped panels, and details can give the frame a recognizable theme. Keep added parts secure and avoid obstructing the bed’s ladder or access.

16. Choose a canopy, surf shack, or castle look

For a lighter makeover, a canopy or fabric enclosure can give KURA a hideaway feel; a surf-shack or castle theme makes the change more graphic and room-specific. IKEA Hackers documents canopy, surf-shack, and castle ideas, while IKEA Greece lists a KURA-only fabric enclosure accessory that fits either low or loft orientation and either ladder side and attaches to hooks without drilling. The accessory measures 168 cm wide by 117 cm high and is recommended by IKEA Greece from age 3. That recommendation applies to the accessory, not use of the loft bed: IKEA’s separate loft-bed guidance still says the upper bed is unsuitable under age 6. IKEA Greece KURA bed accessory.

How to choose an idea for your room

  • Decide the main purpose: storage, another sleeping place, play, or a visual refresh. A build that serves one purpose may reduce room for another.
  • Measure the actual bed and room: account for the local model, mattress, ceiling height, under-bed clearance, ladder position, and space needed to get in and out.
  • Match the project to the work involved: paint and a removable textile treatment are different from cutting, adding structure, changing the sleeping arrangement, or building a climbing feature.
  • Preserve everyday access: leave room to change sheets, reach the child, use the ladder, and supervise play.
  • Use the manufacturer’s safety information as a baseline: a DIY design does not replace IKEA’s age guidance or warnings about entrapment hazards, and examples online are not proof of safety.

The examples are drawn from IKEA Hackers’ KURA roundup and Apartment Therapy’s customization gallery; they represent distinct projects rather than a canonical set of 16 or plans guaranteed to fit every KURA.
