Here are 14 specifically identified plants, plus a carefully qualified fifteenth option: another trailing peperomia selected by its botanical name, since the available guidance does not verify an additional named species.
Succulent strings for bright spots
These close relatives in the genus Curio are grown for their distinctive leaves and cascading stems. They are not five unrelated plant families, and their shared care needs make them a natural group: give them a bright, warm position, use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix, and let the medium dry before watering lightly. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) identifies the group as poisonous; keep plants away from children and pets, and avoid contact with sap, which can irritate skin.

- String of pearls or string of beads (Curio rowleyanus): Round, bead-like leaves create a distinctive cascade. RHS says the stems can reach 90 cm (3 ft); that is a possible horticultural length, not a guaranteed size indoors.
- String of wasabi peas (Curio rowleyanus ‘Variegatus’): A variegated form of string of pearls, with green-and-cream, pea-like leaves. Its care and safety considerations are those of the string-of group.
- String of tears (Curio citriformis): Pointed, ovoid leaves give this more compact-looking relative a different silhouette.
- String of watermelons (Curio herreianus): Egg-shaped leaves with stripes hang along trailing stems.
- String of bananas (Curio radicans): Curved, green leaves distinguish this trailing plant. RHS describes stems reaching 90 cm (3 ft), a possible length rather than a promised indoor measurement.
- String of dolphins (Curio peregrinus): Its branched leaves resemble small dolphins, making it another sculptural choice within the same close-knit group.
Hoyas for foliage and fragrant flowers
Hoyas combine trailing or climbing growth with fleshy leaves. The RHS recommends bright light and warmth for good growth and flowering. Their flowers are described as fragrant, but flowering is not guaranteed in every indoor setting. Hoya sap is toxic and can irritate skin, so handle damaged stems carefully and keep the plants out of reach of children and pets.

- Pothos (Epipremnum, often E. aureum): An adaptable vine with heart-shaped leaves. Let it cascade or train it up a support. Allow the surface of the growing medium to dry slightly before watering. Pothos is toxic, so it is not a suitable choice where a child or pet might chew it.
- Ivy (Hedera spp.): A versatile trailing option for indirect or lower light. The RHS notes that smaller-leaved or slower-growing outdoor cultivars can also be grown indoors; choose a plant identified as suitable for indoor growing rather than assuming every ivy cultivar will adapt equally well.
Peperomias for patterned leaves
Peperomias are foliage-focused choices, including plants with small, patterned leaves and heart-shaped forms. They are vulnerable to overwatering, so check the medium rather than following a fixed calendar. Common names can be confusing; the RHS advises checking the botanical name on the plant label.
- String of turtles (Peperomia prostrata): Its trailing stems carry small leaves patterned like turtle shells.
- Variegated Cupid peperomia (Peperomia nitida ‘Variegata’): Heart-shaped leaves edged in yellow make this a foliage-led option for a hanging display.
- Another trailing peperomia, identified by its botanical label: This is a category-level suggestion, not a verified third species or cultivar. Choose a locally available trailing peperomia only when its botanical identity and care requirements are clearly stated; the RHS guidance reviewed here does not establish another named species to add to the two above.
A trailing philodendron for heart-shaped foliage
Philodendron hederaceum ‘Brasil’ has trailing stems and heart-shaped leaves marked with lime-green variegation. The University of Illinois Extension notes that higher light enhances its variegation. Choose this one when leaf pattern is a priority, and position it where the trailing stems can be displayed without obstructing a walkway.

Keep watering plant-specific
There is no useful single calendar rule for all these plants. The RHS and University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension guidance for string of pearls emphasizes free drainage and allowing the growing medium to dry before a light watering. For pothos, Wisconsin Extension recommends letting the surface dry slightly. Peperomias are vulnerable to excess water. Check the medium and the plant’s condition instead of watering every pot on the same day.
Check household safety before choosing
The RHS identifies Curio string-of plants as poisonous and warns that their sap may irritate skin. It also identifies Epipremnum as toxic. The RHS says hoya sap is toxic and can irritate skin. Keep these plants away from children and pets, and avoid describing any of the listed choices as pet-safe: the available guidance does not establish that claim for every species here.
