You can make a patio feel more private without closing it off. Start by identifying the specific sightline you want to screen, then choose a planting or screen solution that provides enough height while preserving the light and views you want to keep. These 15 ideas range from movable containers to established living boundaries, so you can adapt them to your space, climate and maintenance routine.
Plan privacy around the view you want to block
Before buying plants or a screen, note where overlooking comes from and which parts of the patio need shelter. A boundary that blocks one neighbor’s window may leave another view untouched; screening the whole perimeter can also make a small patio darker or more enclosed than intended. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends balancing privacy and shelter with light and outward views. As Gareth Richards, Associate Editor of The Garden at the RHS, puts it: “Well thought-out screening can transform the feel of your outdoor space: try to create a balance between shelter and privacy while not blocking too much light and views out.” RHS: How to screen off your garden.

- Check the view from the seats you use most, not just from the patio entrance.
- Estimate the screen height needed at that angle, and consider whether a partial or permeable screen will do.
- Account for mature plant size, soil, exposure, watering, upkeep, and roots near drains or structures before planting. RHS guidance also recommends checking relevant local planning considerations, especially near public rights of way or in conservation areas. RHS: Screening plants.
15 patio garden ideas for privacy and calm
1. Group large containers as a soft boundary
Arrange substantial pots along the edge of a seating area or in front of a low fence. Grouping them creates a more continuous visual boundary than scattering individual pots, while leaving room to move or rearrange them. Choose plants for the actual sightline and mature size, rather than assuming any large pot will screen a seated view.

A trellis gives climbing plants a vertical framework and can soften a plain fence. It is useful where planting space is narrow, but check the climber’s growth habit: some plants grow thickly near the top and leave lower areas exposed unless pruned with the screen’s purpose in mind. The RHS recommends trellis and climbers as a way to soften fencing. RHS: How to screen off your garden; RHS: How to create privacy in your garden.

3. Add a permeable slatted screen
Slats can interrupt a direct view without creating the solid feel of a wall. Place a panel beside a seating area or across a particular angle, rather than automatically screening the whole patio. A permeable design can filter wind, but its suitability and stability depend on site exposure and installation; follow the product instructions and any applicable property requirements.
4. Use a small tree to interrupt one sightline
A carefully positioned tree can block an unwanted view while leaving other parts of the garden open. Before choosing one, check its mature height and spread against the window or viewpoint you want to screen, as well as available soil and distance from drains and structures. RHS screening guidance includes narrow trees among the options for targeted screening. RHS: How to screen off your garden.
5. Plant a hedge where there is room
A hedge can form a leafy boundary, but it needs space and ongoing maintenance. Choose a species that suits your soil and exposure and will not outgrow the site. The RHS lists examples such as Elaeagnus × ebbingei, Photinia × fraseri ‘Red Robin’, and Quercus ilex; these are examples, not universal recommendations, and suitability varies with local growing conditions. 6. Consider pleached trees for high screening
Pleached trees have trained branches that form a raised leafy screen. They can provide screening above a boundary where ground space is limited, but they are not a maintenance-free shortcut: allow for the space and care needed by the trees, and confirm their eventual size is suitable. The RHS describes pleached trees as an option for high screening with a smaller ground footprint. RHS: How to screen off your garden.
7. Combine a fence with evergreen climbers
A fence-and-climber combination—sometimes called a “fedge”—can make a boundary denser and greener than either element alone. Choose a climber that suits the fence and your conditions, and check whether its growth needs guiding or pruning to fill the area you want screened. RHS: How to create privacy in your garden.
8. Make a sheltered seating nook with planting
Rather than screening every edge, define one corner for dining or relaxing with containers, shrubs or a partial screen. Position the taller elements where they interrupt views into the nook, keeping the entrance and any valued outlook more open. This creates a sense of enclosure without requiring a continuous boundary.

9. Use tall grasses for an informal screen
Grasses can create a looser, softer boundary than a clipped hedge. Check their mature height and spread, and choose varieties suited to the site’s soil and exposure. Because foliage and screening effect can vary through the year, consider whether you need privacy in every season before relying on grasses alone.

Clump-forming bamboos, including Fargesia, are among the screening options listed by the RHS. Check the plant’s mature size and the conditions it needs before planting, and plan for regular care. Bamboo in a pot may offer more visual interest than effective privacy, and a container can dry out if neglected, so don’t rely on it as a screen without considering watering and growth habit. RHS: Screening plants; RHS: How to create privacy in your garden.
11. Use a focal container tree
A tree in a pot can add height and a focal point where there is no planting bed. The RHS identifies Japanese maple, olive and bay as possible container-tree choices, but whether a particular tree will thrive depends on local conditions and ongoing container care. Select a pot that accommodates the rootball and has drainage. RHS: Trees in containers.

12. Layer planting at different heights
Combine lower plants near the seating area with taller plants at the edge or behind it. Layers can make a boundary feel lush and help address views from different heights, but avoid crowding plants beyond their mature size. Use the tallest elements only where they are needed to block the relevant angle.
13. Screen an unattractive service area
Use a freestanding screen, lattice or a large potted plant to conceal bins or another unsightly spot without making the whole patio feel closed in. Penn State Extension describes willow, bamboo and lattice screens as options and notes that a large potted plant can provide an immediate living screen. That guidance does not establish that a screen is suitable for every wind exposure, so secure it appropriately for the site and follow product and property requirements. Penn State Extension: Creating privacy in your yard.
14. Add container planting where there is no usable soil
Containers let you add greenery and structure on paved patios or where planting beds are unavailable. Choose pots with drainage holes; the RHS says these are essential, and container plants need regular watering in spring and summer. Arrange pots where you can reach them for care, especially if they will form part of a screen. RHS: Plants for containers; RHS: Growing plants in containers.

15. Soften a solid boundary with planting and a carefully placed mirror
Planting at the base of a solid fence can make it feel less stark. A mirror may reflect greenery or light and visually open up a corner, but it does not provide privacy by itself; position it so it does not reflect a neighbor’s private space or direct unwanted views toward another area.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the approach that fits your patio
Think about what each option changes as well as what it screens. A physical panel can be quick to install, while plants need time to grow and continuing care. RHS container guidance notes that pots add structure where soil is unavailable; Penn State Extension describes willow, bamboo or lattice screening and a large potted plant as options for an unattractive area. Neither source establishes a universal result for privacy, wind performance or installation, so assess the site and product before committing.
- For a narrow or paved patio: consider containers, trellis or a targeted panel, and make sure pots have drainage and can be watered.
- For a living boundary with room to grow: consider a hedge, grasses or suitable screening plants after checking mature size, soil and exposure.
- For one specific overlooking angle: try a strategically placed tree or partial screen instead of enclosing the whole space.
- For quicker concealment: consider a suitable manufactured or woven screen, but account for wind exposure and secure installation.
Keep the screen comfortable and manageable
Privacy works best when the solution fits both the view and the routine you can sustain. Leave wanted light and outlook open, allow plants room to reach their mature size, and account for watering, pruning and wind exposure. A screen that is too tall, too dense or too demanding can make the patio less pleasant even if it blocks the view.
