For spring color, plant hardy spring-flowering bulbs in autumn. Good choices range from small flowers such as crocus and snowdrops to tulips, daffodils, and ornamental alliums. The right planting window and depth depend on your local conditions, bulb type, and soil; use the bulb supplier’s instructions or regional extension guidance rather than treating one date or depth as universal.

15 spring-flowering bulbs to consider

This is a menu of bulb types supported by extension and horticultural guidance, not a promise that every plant suits every region or blooms on an identical schedule. Flowering order varies with species, cultivar, and climate, so check locally for timing and hardiness.

  1. Crocus

A small, low-growing flower that brings color close to the ground. Iowa State Extension includes crocus among small bulbs commonly planted 3–4 inches deep.

  2. Snowdrops

A small bulb for early-season interest. Iowa State Extension groups snowdrops with crocus and squill in its 3–4-inch planting-depth guidance.

When to plant spring bulbs

Autumn is the general planting season for hardy bulbs that flower in spring. The suitable window varies with regional weather and species, so a calendar date that works in one location may not work in another. Iowa State University Extension frames fall as the time to select and plant bulbs for the following year, while the Royal Horticultural Society also advises planting spring-flowering bulbs in autumn.

How deep to plant bulbs

Depth guidance is a starting point, not a single rule for every bulb. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends planting most bulbs at two to three times their depth; UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes a depth of about three times the bulb’s height. Iowa State Extension gives 3–4 inches for small bulbs such as crocus, snowdrops, and squill.

Soil texture can also affect recommendations. Colorado State University Extension’s Arapahoe County guidance calls for relatively shallower planting in heavy clay and deeper planting in sandy soil. Because those recommendations are regional, follow the bulb supplier’s directions or local extension guidance for your own soil and plant type.

  • Identify the bulb and check its package or species-specific instructions.
  • Use a local recommendation when available, especially if your soil is heavy clay or sandy.
  • Do not apply the small-bulb 3–4-inch guidance to every bulb type.

Choose bulbs for your garden, not just a bloom calendar

These choices vary in scale and display role: crocus, snowdrops, squill, and other small bulbs suit a different visual scale from tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and ornamental alliums. To plan a sequence of spring color, compare the expected flowering period on the label or in a reliable regional plant profile. The available guidance supports a broad range of bulb types, but not a precise, universal early-to-late schedule for all fifteen.

Check hardiness, site, soil, and drainage requirements for each selected plant before buying. Avoid assuming every bulb returns equally well year after year; repeat performance depends on the species, variety, and growing conditions.

Common bulb problems to anticipate

The Royal Horticultural Society identifies slugs and snails, squirrels—especially around tulips and crocus—and several bulb diseases as possible problems. For identification and advice, consult its bulb planting guidance and local extension resources. The right response depends on the pest or disease involved.
