A 15-inch planer handles boards up to approximately 15 inches wide, but that label does not tell you the machine’s maximum thickness, cutterhead design, motor, electrical requirements, or footprint. Current machines range from a 2 HP benchtop spiral planer to 3 HP stationary models with helical or straight-knife heads. Match the planer to your stock dimensions, available power, dust collection, workspace and production demands—not to width alone.
What “15-inch planer” means
The 15-inch designation primarily refers to maximum cutting width. Maximum stock thickness differs substantially: the current examples range from 6 inches to 8-1/4 inches. A planer’s minimum stock thickness, minimum board length, depth-of-cut limit and feed rates are separate specifications that must be checked in the model documentation.
Benchtop versus floor-standing construction
Benchtop machines
Benchtop planers are suited to intermittent work where a smaller footprint, lower purchase price and easier relocation matter. Grizzly’s G0999 is a 2 HP, 15-inch benchtop spiral planer with a built-in digital readout (DRO), listed at $1,395 when checked. A benchtop frame generally provides less mass and shorter integrated support than a stationary cabinet or floor-standing machine, so plan for sturdy infeed and outfeed support when handling long boards.
Stationary and cabinet-stand machines
Fixed-table and floor-standing planers occupy more space but provide heavier construction, longer support surfaces and a more stable setup for repeated work. Grizzly identifies the G0815 as “No ordinary benchtop planer”; its 3 HP frame, 8-1/4-inch maximum stock thickness and 4-inch dust port place it in a heavier shop-machine category. Powermatic describes the 15BHH as a stationary planer for shops requiring industrial durability and precision in a floor-standing format.
#1 Best Overall
- HELICAL CUTTERHEAD: Helical cutterhead houses 48 staggered carbide knives that are engineered to align themselves without any adjustment
- IMPROVED CUTS: Innovative Precision Air Strut System (PASS) provides consistent upward pressure on the cutterhead, reducing the chance of board snipe
- HEAVY DUTY DESIGN: Precision-ground cast iron table and four-post design for stability and duribility
- 2-SPEED FEED RATE: Dual infeed speed control for 16 fpm or 20 fpm maximizes cut efficiency
- DUST PORT: 4" dust port hooks up to dust management system and helps keep your shop clean
Cutterhead choices: straight knives, spiral and helical
Straight-knife heads
Straight-knife planers use conventional high-speed-steel (HSS) knives. The Grizzly G0815 has a three-knife HSS head, 1/8-inch full-width cut capacity and selectable 16 or 30 feet-per-minute feed rates. Straight knives usually offer a lower initial machine price and familiar sharpening or replacement procedures, but a damaged knife can affect a broad section of the cut until it is serviced.
Spiral and helical heads
Spiral and helical heads use many small carbide inserts rather than long HSS knives. Inserts can be rotated when an edge is damaged and replaced individually. Powermatic says its 15-inch helical planer delivers smoother finish, reduced tear-out and quieter operation than conventional straight-knife designs; those are the manufacturer’s claims, not independent test results. Insert count and arrangement vary: the Powermatic 15BHH uses 48 four-sided carbide inserts, while the Powermatic 15HH and Grizzly G0453ZX list 74 indexable carbide inserts.

Power, dust collection and installation checks
- Electrical service: several machines in this class specify 220–240 V single-phase power. Confirm voltage, phase, amperage, receptacle and plug requirements with the exact manual and have circuit work completed by a qualified electrician.
- Dust collection: a 4-inch port is common in the listed stationary examples. Match the port to a collector capable of maintaining airflow through the hose, fittings and filter; a reducer or undersized collector can quickly restrict chip evacuation.
- Footprint and handling: measure the machine, tables, dust hose and stock-clearance path. Include room to safely support boards before and after the cutterhead.
- Stability: anchor or level stationary equipment as specified. A mobile base or casters can help repositioning, but they must not allow movement during a cut.
- Replacement parts: verify that the exact HSS knives or carbide insert pattern remains available. Inserts are not universal merely because they are the same size; hole pattern, seating and cutting geometry must match the cutterhead.
How to choose a 15-inch planer
Choose a benchtop model when
- You have limited floor space or need to move the machine between jobs.
- Planing is intermittent rather than continuous production.
- A lower entry price is more important than maximum frame mass and support length.
Choose a stationary or cabinet model when
- You routinely process long, heavy or wide hardwood boards.
- Repeatable infeed and outfeed support and a fixed shop setup improve throughput.
- You can provide the required 220–240 V circuit, dust collection and floor space.
Choose spiral or helical when
- Reduced tear-out, lower perceived operating noise and carbide insert service are priorities.
- You work varied grain or expect occasional localized cutter damage.
Choose straight knives when
- Lower initial cost and conventional HSS knife servicing fit your budget and workflow.
- You prefer changing or sharpening a complete knife set using familiar procedures.
Replacement knives and carbide inserts
For a straight-knife planer, buy the exact knife length, thickness, hole pattern and edge geometry specified for the cutterhead. Replace or sharpen knives as a matched set and follow the manufacturer’s setting procedure so the head remains balanced and the cut is even.

- Improved Large E Stop - Oversized, easy access emergency stop improves operator safety and visibility.
- Solid Cast Iron Infeed and Outfeed Tables - Provides stability, reduces vibration, and supports long boards for consistent results.
- True Helical Cutterhead - Delivers quieter operation, improved surface finish, and longer insert life.
- Cutterhead Access for Insert Change or Rotation - Simplifies maintenance and reduces downtime when rotating or replacing inserts.
- 4 Inch Bi-Directional Dust Port - Efficient chip evacuation with flexible dust collection setup.
For spiral or helical machines, identify the cutterhead model and insert part number before ordering. Four-sided inserts can often be rotated to a fresh edge, but only after cleaning the pocket, checking for damage and tightening fasteners to the maker’s specified torque. Keep spare inserts and the correct driver in the shop; a single chipped insert can leave a visible track across the board.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Measure your widest and thickest stock, then compare both dimensions with the model’s maximum and minimum capacities.
- Decide whether the machine will stay installed or must be moved, and measure the complete handling and service footprint.
- Confirm voltage, phase, circuit capacity, plug and electrician requirements.
- Size dust collection for the stated port and your hose length and fittings.
- Compare cutterhead type, insert or knife availability, feed-rate options and maximum depth of cut.
- Verify included tables, stand, casters, DRO and other accessories rather than assuming they are included.
- Check current price, shipping, tax, lead time and parts support directly with the manufacturer or dealer before ordering.
The Bottom Line
Buy a 15-inch benchtop planer for space-conscious, intermittent work; choose a stationary 3 HP machine for heavier stock and repeatability. Select spiral or helical carbide when insert service and difficult grain matter, or straight HSS knives when conventional maintenance and lower cost are the priorities. Confirm capacity, power, dust collection and replacement-part compatibility before purchase.
