Hammocks are grouped by how they’re made, where they’re used, and the features they add—not by one standardized list of types. The 15 labels below are useful ways to compare options, but they overlap: a rope hammock can have spreader bars, and “hammock with stand” describes a setup rather than a bed style. Choose by where you’ll hang it, the feel and airflow you want, and whether the hammock, suspension and supports are compatible.
15 hammock styles and configurations
Some names describe construction, some describe use, and some are regional or seller-defined style labels. Treat the distinctions accordingly: a product’s actual materials, dimensions and features matter more than its category name.

1. Rope hammock
An open weave lets air circulate, making rope hammocks a common choice for warm-weather lounging. Many have spreader bars, though rope describes the bed construction, not whether bars are present. Hammocks.com’s consumer guidance favors polyester rope for outdoor use and recommends more care with cotton when it gets wet; that is retailer guidance, not independent durability testing. Quilted hammocks use a padded fabric bed for a cushioned lounging surface. They are generally less airy and bulkier than open rope styles, so they suit someone prioritizing comfort over airflow. Some have spreader bars; check the specific design.

3. Brazilian hammock
In the traditional form, a Brazilian hammock is a woven fabric bed, often cotton, without spreader bars. The fabric gathers around the user for a wrapping, cozy feel. Retailer guidance commonly associates this style with porches and indoor or covered spaces.
4. Mayan hammock
A Mayan-style hammock is typically described as a flexible, open cord mesh that breathes well and conforms around the body. The contemporary product label alone does not establish a direct historical lineage to the Classic Maya.
5. Nicaraguan hammock
Nicaraguan appears as a regional woven-cord style in the Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI) style taxonomy. It is best treated as a style label: construction and details can vary by maker and product. CBI’s 2014 hammock fact sheet

6. Colombian hammock
Colombian is another regional fabric-hammock label used by specialist sellers. There is no single construction difference established here that applies to every Colombian and Brazilian hammock; product traditions and designs vary.
7. Venezuelan or “jungle” hammock
CBI identifies Venezuelan hammocks as a style, while market descriptions also use “jungle hammock” for breathable nylon or polyester designs. Think of this as a function-led label, not a guarantee of one material or specification.
8. Naval hammock
Naval describes a hammock by historical or functional use. CBI’s 2014 fact sheet says naval hammocks are usually made from canvas or strong cotton. That dated description should not be taken as a standard for modern consumer products.

9. Spreader-bar hammock
Bars at the ends hold the bed open and relatively flat. “Spreader-bar” describes structure rather than material, so it can overlap with rope, quilted or other hammock styles.
10. Camping hammock
A camping hammock is designed around low weight and packability; nylon is often presented as a lightweight option. Bug netting and rain cover are not automatic features—check what the particular model includes and what it is designed to accept.
11. Travel hammock
Travel hammock is a broad portability label, often grouped with camping styles. Before buying, check the packed size and weight, whether suspension is included, and the model’s stated load limit.

12. Hammock chair
A hammock chair suspends a seat from one overhead point and takes less floor space than a full-length lying hammock. It needs either a compatible chair stand or a verified load-bearing overhead mounting point.
13. Poolside hammock
Poolside is a setting-oriented label often applied to breathable rope or spreader-bar hammocks. The label does not promise resistance to chlorine, salt, ultraviolet exposure or mildew. Check the material and care instructions for the exact product.

14. Canopy camping hammock
This is a camping-oriented configuration with an overhead cover for sun or weather protection. It is not a standardized hammock category; confirm what the canopy covers and whether any bug net or rain protection is included.

15. Caribbean-style hammock
Some sellers use “Caribbean-style” for a modern take on traditional spreader-bar designs. Because the name is seller-dependent, inspect the stated construction and materials rather than assuming the label guarantees a particular design.

The material advice in the final row reflects manufacturer or retailer guidance, not comparative durability testing. For example, Vivere’s 2021 catalog shows different stand configurations for Brazilian, mesh and parachute hammocks than for rope, poolside and quilted models. That is a reason to verify compatibility, not proof that any listed stand is currently available or fits a particular hammock. Vivere
Measure and check the complete hanging setup
A hammock’s style name cannot tell you whether it will fit your space or work with a particular stand. Use the specific product and setup instructions to confirm the required span, mounting arrangement and components.

- Measure the available space. Compare it with the hammock’s stated dimensions and required hanging distance; do not assume one universal tree spacing or span.
- Confirm every component is compatible. Check the hammock, stand, suspension, connectors and mounting system as a complete setup. Stand designs can differ by hammock construction.
- Check rated capacity across the setup. Use the stated limits for the hammock and its supports and connectors; do not assume the bed’s rating alone covers the entire installation.
- For a hammock chair, verify the overhead point or stand. Use a compatible chair stand or a mounting point confirmed to bear the intended load.
- Follow the maker’s installation and care instructions. This is especially important for outdoor exposure and for any model using separate suspension or weather accessories.
