15 Best Smart Door Locks for Better Home and Office Security in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best smart lock for every door. The right choice depends on whether you are replacing a deadbolt or retrofitting one, which smart-home platform you use, how guests or employees will enter, and what happens when the battery, phone, Wi-Fi, or cloud service fails.

For most homes, start with the Yale Assure Lock 2, Schlage Encode Plus, or a comparable keypad deadbolt with a physical-key fallback. Renters and homeowners who want to keep their existing exterior hardware should look at the Yale Approach, August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, or Level Bolt. Apple Home Key users have particularly strong options in the Aqara U400, Schlage Sense Pro, Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus, and Level Lock Pro.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For a genuine workplace with multiple employees, audit requirements, or life-safety obligations, a commercial access-control system may be safer and more appropriate than a residential smart deadbolt.

Prices and stock are volatile. Official price signals checked August 18, 2026, included $139.99 for Yale Approach with Wi-Fi, $279.99 for a Yale Assure Lock 2 Touchscreen with Wi-Fi configuration, $299.99 for Assure Lock 2 Touch, $309.99 for Assure Lock 2 Plus, $349 for Level Lock Pro, $199 for Level Bolt, and $149.99 for the eufy Smart Lock. Confirm the exact model and today’s price before purchase.

Our selection criteria

This is a category-based shortlist, not a claim that every lock was hands-on tested by the writer. The comparison weighs door compatibility, mechanical certification, credential management, connectivity, emergency access, privacy, battery maintenance, ecosystem support, and suitability for homes, rentals, and offices. Independent testing context is available from Consumer Reports’ 2026 smart-lock coverage.

The 15 best smart door locks by use case

1. Yale Assure Lock 2 — best mainstream all-around option

Exact product: Yale Assure Lock 2, with the keypad, touchscreen, keyed, key-free, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, or Apple Home Key module selected for your needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the safest starting point for many homeowners because the Assure Lock 2 family covers several installation and ecosystem choices. It is a full deadbolt replacement with keypad access and app control; some configurations add Wi-Fi, physical keys, Apple Home Key, or other integrations.

Yale lists compatibility with common U.S. dimensions, including 13⁄8- to 21⁄4-inch door thickness, 23⁄8- or 23⁄4-inch backset, and standard 11⁄2- or 21⁄8-inch bore configurations. The touchscreen Wi-Fi configuration is listed as ANSI/BHMA Grade 2. See the official Yale specifications.

Best features: keypad entry, app access, access notifications, voice-assistant support, auto-locking, and—on the relevant configuration—DoorSense, Apple Watch access, and a physical-key backup.

Main drawback: “Assure Lock 2” is not one uniform product. Module choice changes connectivity, price, emergency access, and platform support. Choose the configuration before comparing it with another brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Office suitability: Reasonable for a private office or small studio with limited users; not a substitute for commercial access control where detailed employee administration, door monitoring, or regulated egress is required.

2. Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus — best Yale option for Apple Home Key

The Assure Lock 2 Plus is aimed at Apple households that want tap-to-unlock Home Key access rather than a conventional key. Yale’s comparison showed a $309.99 price signal when checked.

It remains a full replacement deadbolt with keypad and app access, but its key-free design is the critical qualification: do not choose it if you require a traditional physical-key fallback. Apple Home Key requires compatible Apple hardware and software; Yale specifies an iPhone XS or later with iOS 15 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 8 or later, for relevant Home Key models.

Best for: Apple users who want a clean, credential-based entry experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main drawback: Guests, children, contractors, and people without compatible Apple devices still need a practical access plan. Confirm how emergency power and recovery work before installing a key-free lock.

3. Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch — best mainstream fingerprint option

The Assure Lock 2 Touch adds fingerprint access to the Yale family, alongside keypad and app entry. Yale’s comparison showed a $299.99 price signal.

Fingerprint access is convenient when users do not want to carry a key or remember a PIN, but it is not evidence of superior physical security. Wet, dirty, injured, or worn fingers can reduce convenience, and biometric credentials are harder to replace than a code. Review the manufacturer’s storage and deletion policies before enrolling household members.

Main drawback: Wi-Fi, Home Key, key backup, battery behavior, and supported ecosystems depend on the exact configuration. Check the product page rather than assuming features transfer across the Assure range.

4. Yale Approach Lock with Wi-Fi — best Yale retrofit for renters

Yale Approach replaces the interior mechanism while preserving the existing exterior deadbolt and key. It is therefore attractive to renters and homeowners who do not want to change the outside appearance or rekey the door. Yale describes the product as an inside-the-door retrofit and listed a $139.99 price when checked.

Its Wi-Fi version supports remote administration, but compatibility depends on the existing deadbolt, thumb-turn shape, interior clearance, door alignment, and available motor torque. Inspect the existing hardware rather than assuming every deadbolt is compatible.

Best for: renters, landlords, and homeowners who want to keep their current key.

Main drawback: Retrofit convenience transfers some responsibility to the old lock. A stiff or poorly aligned deadbolt can cause motor stalls and rapid battery drain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. August Wi-Fi Smart Lock — best established retrofit option

The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock attaches over the interior side of a compatible existing deadbolt, leaving the exterior cylinder and physical key in place. August specifically requires a compatible single-cylinder deadbolt and supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi; confirm the complete compatibility list at the official product page.

Built-in Wi-Fi enables remote control without a separate bridge. DoorSense can report whether the door is closed, and August supports virtual keys, integrations, and lost-phone handling. August says its products use two-factor authentication and encryption; these are first-party security claims, not independent cybersecurity certification. Its comparison area showed a $199.99 price signal when checked.

Main drawback: The exterior keypad is separate, so the base product is not automatically a standalone PIN solution. Wi-Fi also generally increases battery demands compared with Bluetooth-only operation.

6. Schlage Encode Plus — best established Apple Home Key deadbolt

Schlage Encode Plus combines a conventional full-replacement deadbolt with keypad access, app control, and Apple Home Key support on the appropriate model. It is a strong choice for Apple households that still want a familiar physical-key fallback and visible keypad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the exact current model, regional availability, supported platforms, and price on Schlage’s official site. “Encode” and “Sense” names cover different generations and feature sets, so do not compare them as if they were identical.

Main drawback: It is less discreet than an invisible retrofit lock, and buyers who only need local keypad access may not benefit from paying for every connected feature.

7. Schlage Sense Pro — best premium Matter/Thread contender

Sense Pro is a premium keypad deadbolt aimed at users who want modern platform connectivity, including Matter over Thread and Apple-oriented features. Third-party coverage reported a price signal around $399 in June 2026; verify that figure and the exact U.S. configuration before buying.

Matter can improve interoperability, but it does not guarantee that fingerprints, access logs, auto-unlock, door-position sensing, or every administrative function will appear in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings. Some features may remain in Schlage’s app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main drawback: Premium cost and hub setup are difficult to justify for a basic single-door installation.

8. Level Lock Pro — best premium discreet design

Level Lock Pro hides nearly all of the smart-lock hardware inside the door, preserving a conventional exterior appearance. The product is positioned with Apple Home Key, Matter, door-status detection, key cards or fobs, and premium mechanical credentials. Level’s comparison page showed a $349 price signal and lists BHMA AAA and ANSI Grade 1/A positioning for relevant Level products.

Matter operation requires the appropriate Matter-over-Thread smart-home hub or controller. Level explains the requirement in its Matter documentation.

  • Self-learning AI: Fingerprint door lock recognition gets more precise with every touch, so you don't have to try agian and again to get in. Never be awkward or upset at unlocking the door.
  • Control from Anywhere with Built-in Wi-Fi: No bridge required, you can control your wifi smart lock from anywhere via the eufy Security app. Easy setup.
  • Integrated eufy ecosystem: If you have a eufy doorbell, you can add your wifi door lock to your routines and control devices together for keyless entry within the eufy Security app.

Main drawback: It is expensive, and the discreet form factor does not eliminate the need to verify door dimensions, alignment, hub support, and emergency entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Level Bolt — best minimal-change hardware

Level Bolt fits inside the door and preserves the exterior appearance and keyway. It suits homeowners who dislike a large exterior touchscreen or keypad and want smart control without visibly changing the door.

Its feature set and Matter/Thread requirements differ from Level Lock Pro, so compare the exact version at Level’s comparison page. The listed price signal was $199.

Main drawback: Without an exterior keypad, it is less convenient for guests, cleaners, children, or anyone without the app. It is a poor choice if the household needs simple code entry.

10. Aqara U400 — best advanced Apple-focused lock

The Aqara U400 combines Apple Home Key with fingerprint, passcode, NFC, physical-key, and app-based entry. It also targets Matter and Thread users and has a UWB-oriented convenience angle described in Aqara’s CES 2026 announcement.

Its broad credential selection makes it attractive to a household with different preferences. The most distinctive features are most useful to Apple users with compatible devices and controllers, however. Confirm regional hardware, hub, app, and platform requirements at the official U400 page.

Main drawback: Feature richness can mean more setup complexity. Matter support should not be read as a guarantee that every fingerprint, NFC, log, or auto-unlock function works natively in every ecosystem.

11. eufy Smart Lock Touch & Wi-Fi — best fingerprint and Wi-Fi combination

The eufy Smart Lock Touch & Wi-Fi offers fingerprint, keypad, app, physical-key, and Wi-Fi-based access. It is a useful candidate for buyers who want several entry methods without adding a separate Wi-Fi bridge. See the official product page for the exact configuration.

eufy lists fingerprint and in-app data as stored locally using an AES128 encryption chip. That is a manufacturer claim and should not be treated as an independent audit. Biometric enrollment still creates privacy and recovery considerations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main drawback: Investigate the current app, cloud, privacy, firmware, and battery policies before purchase, especially if the lock will manage rental or workplace access.

12. eufy Smart Lock — best simpler eufy keypad option

The simpler eufy Smart Lock provides Bluetooth app access, keypad entry, a physical key, and local operation claims. eufy listed a $149.99 price signal and describes the lock as BHMA Grade 2; it also states that the product was tested for 250,000 locking and unlocking cycles. These are manufacturer-published claims.

Best for: buyers who want several local entry methods without necessarily requiring built-in Wi-Fi.

Main drawback: Remote access and smart-home integrations may be more limited than on Wi-Fi versions. Do not confuse this product with eufy’s Touch, FamiLock, or other model families.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. SwitchBot Lock Ultra — best feature-rich retrofit alternative

SwitchBot Lock Ultra takes the retrofit approach and builds toward a wider accessory and hub ecosystem. It can appeal to renters or owners who want to preserve the existing exterior deadbolt while adding optional keypad or connected functions.

Review the official product page for the current U.S. configuration, hub requirements, bundle contents, and compatibility list. Retrofit locks must match the existing interior thumb-turn and have enough clearance for the motor.

Main drawback: The best feature set may require extra accessories or a hub, and regional availability and bundle pricing need verification.

14. Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro WiFi — best fingerprint/keypad alternative

The U-Bolt Pro WiFi combines a fingerprint reader, keypad, app control, physical key, and Wi-Fi-oriented remote access. It is a flexible option for households that want multiple credentials and do not center their setup on Apple Home Key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify current firmware support, app behavior, security disclosures, integrations, and door specifications at U-tec’s official site. Fingerprint reliability depends on enrollment, finger condition, sensor cleanliness, and environmental conditions.

Main drawback: Feature breadth does not automatically equal better security. Use unique accounts and codes, enable available account protections, and retain an emergency entry method.

15. Kwikset Halo Touch/Halo Wi-Fi — best conventional-hardware alternative

Kwikset’s Halo family provides familiar full-replacement hardware with keypad or fingerprint variants and app-based access. It is a sensible comparison for buyers who already use Kwikset hardware or want a mainstream alternative to Yale and Schlage.

Halo Touch and Halo Wi-Fi are different products. Check the exact model, physical-key policy, wireless method, platform support, price, and current availability at Kwikset’s official site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main drawback: Product naming can obscure material differences between variants. A fingerprint model, Wi-Fi keypad model, and Bluetooth configuration should be evaluated separately.

Which lock is best for your situation?

  • Best overall home choice: Yale Assure Lock 2 or Schlage Encode Plus, selected with the connectivity and key-backup options you actually need.
  • Best renter or retrofit choice: Yale Approach, August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, or Level Bolt.
  • Best Apple Home Key choices: Aqara U400, Schlage Sense Pro, Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus, or Level Lock Pro.
  • Best fingerprint choices: eufy Smart Lock Touch & Wi-Fi, Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, Aqara U400, or Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro WiFi.
  • Best discreet design: Level Lock Pro or Level Bolt.
  • Best small private office: A keypad deadbolt with individual, expiring credentials may work for a simple private office or studio, provided the door and egress requirements allow it.
  • Best staffed or multi-door office: Commercial access control, not a residential smart deadbolt.

Smart lock types explained

Full deadbolt replacement

A full replacement changes the exterior and interior portions of a standard deadbolt. It can provide an integrated keypad, fingerprint reader, or new cylinder, but installation may require rekeying and closer measurement of the door.

Interior retrofit

A retrofit replaces only the interior thumb-turn mechanism. The outside cylinder and key remain. This is usually the least disruptive option, but it depends on the existing deadbolt and may be bulky inside the door. August says its Smart Lock attaches over the interior side of the existing deadbolt; Yale describes Approach similarly.

Lever and knob locks

These are intended for doors without a separate deadbolt, including some interior rooms, side entrances, and offices. A deadbolt product is not automatically suitable for a lever, narrow-stile door, or panic-bar opening.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Mortise, multipoint, and commercial systems

Mortise and multipoint locks are common outside the United States and are not interchangeable with a standard U.S. deadbolt. Commercial doors may use electric strikes, electromagnetic locks, readers, request-to-exit devices, panic hardware, or centralized controllers. Use a locksmith or access-control professional for these installations.

What to check before buying

1. Measure the door

  • Door thickness.
  • Backset distance: commonly 23⁄8 or 23⁄4 inches on U.S. residential doors.
  • Bore diameter.
  • Single-cylinder or double-cylinder deadbolt.
  • Interior thumb-turn shape and clearance.
  • Door handing and available space around the frame.
  • Strike alignment and depth.
  • Mortise, multipoint, rim-cylinder, narrow-stile, glass, or panic-bar construction.

August requires a compatible single-cylinder deadbolt for its Wi-Fi Smart Lock. Yale lists support for common U.S. dimensions on the Assure Lock 2 Touchscreen with Wi-Fi, but every product still requires model-specific verification.

2. Separate mechanical security from digital convenience

ANSI/BHMA certification is useful evidence of tested mechanical performance. Level lists BHMA AAA and ANSI Grade 1/A testing for relevant products; Yale lists Grade 2 for the Assure Lock 2 Touchscreen with Wi-Fi; eufy lists Grade 2 for its Smart Lock. These grades do not certify the app, cloud account, firmware process, or wireless implementation.

A strong lock on a weak frame is still a weak installation. Use a properly aligned deadbolt, a reinforced strike, and appropriately long screws where the door and frame support them. Certification does not mean the lock prevents burglary, picking, drilling, bumping, or forced entry in every installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Choose connectivity deliberately

  • Bluetooth: Usually lower power and more local, but normally limited to nearby operation without a bridge.
  • Wi-Fi: Convenient for remote control and notifications, but usually consumes more battery and increases dependence on the network and cloud service.
  • Thread: Efficient mesh networking, normally requiring a compatible border router or controller.
  • Matter: Improves interoperability potential, but does not guarantee feature parity across platforms.
  • Z-Wave: Useful with compatible alarm or smart-home hubs, but requires the right controller.
  • Proprietary bridge: Can provide remote access, but adds cost, setup, and another possible failure point.

For example, Level says its Matter implementation requires a Matter-over-Thread-enabled smart-home hub. Basic lock and unlock may work through a platform while fingerprints, access logs, auto-unlock, or door-status features remain dependent on the vendor app or a particular controller.

TEEHO TE001 Keyless Entry Deadbolt with Keypad for Front Door, Matte Black | ANSI Grade 3 Security, 20 User Codes, Low Battery Alert, IP54 Waterproof, One Touch Lock, Anti-Peep Password & 2 Backup Keys
  • Passcode Entry: This keypad lock offers 20 access codes for family use and a temporary code for single-use guest entry
  • One-Time Code: A one-time PIN code can be set for door opening and will automatically be deleted after use
  • Smart Locking: Features an automatic door lock that can be set to lock in 10-99 seconds (off by default) and one-touch auto-lock by pressing and holding any key on the keypad for 2 seconds
  • Long Battery Life & Low Battery Indicator: Powered by 4 AA batteries (not included), lasts up to 365 days. A red light indicator alerts you when battery level drops below 15%
  • Security Deadbolt: Provides reliable home protection with its sturdy aluminum alloy construction, weather resistance (IP54), durability, anti-peeping user code protection, low battery indicator, and solid lock cylinder

4. Compare credentials, not just app ratings

Look for individual users, temporary and recurring codes, expiration dates, administrator roles, access logs, fingerprint enrollment, NFC cards, Apple Home Key, two-factor authentication, remote revocation, and lost-phone recovery. For an office, individual credentials and revocation are more important than simply having a keypad.

5. Plan for failure

Before installation, answer these questions:

  • Will keypad codes work if the internet is down?
  • Can the lock still be opened with a physical key?
  • Does it have exterior battery contacts, USB-C, or another emergency-power method?
  • What happens when the battery is empty?
  • Can a lost phone be removed remotely?
  • Can the owner recover access if the cloud account is unavailable?
  • Does the lock remain manually operable from inside?

Yale says the Assure Lock 2 remains battery-powered during a power outage, uses standard AA batteries, and includes a backup key on relevant configurations. August describes two-factor authentication, encryption, and a lost-phone feature for disabling virtual keys. These statements come from the manufacturers.

Home, rental, and office use

For a home

Prioritize easy local operation, family and guest codes, notifications, a physical-key or emergency-power plan, reliable batteries, and compatibility with the smart-home system already installed. Keypad access is often more practical than requiring every visitor to install an app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a rental or vacation property

Choose temporary or recurring codes, remote administration, activity history, guest turnover tools, owner override, battery alerts, and rental-management integration where available. Give cleaners and maintenance workers individual credentials with expiration dates rather than a permanent shared PIN.

For a small office

A residential lock may suit a private office or studio, but a staffed workplace often needs individual employee credentials, multiple administrators, schedules, entry and exit logs, door-position alerts, forced-entry alerts, centralized management, alarm and camera integrations, and code-compliant egress.

Commercial alternatives include Kisi, Brivo, Verkada Access Control, and Avigilon Alta. These are access-control systems rather than ordinary smart deadbolts. Pricing is generally quote-based and depends on doors, readers, subscriptions, installation, and integrations.

Do not use a residential deadbolt on an exit door, panic-bar door, stairwell, or regulated commercial entrance without review by the landlord, a licensed locksmith, the access-control vendor, and the relevant building or fire-safety professionals. A lock must not prevent lawful emergency egress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and account security

Ask whether fingerprints are stored locally or in the cloud, what location data is collected, how long access logs remain available, whether logs can be deleted, whether two-factor authentication is required, how firmware updates are delivered, and whether the manufacturer publishes vulnerability-reporting or security-update policies.

Biometric data deserves special caution: a compromised PIN can be changed, but a fingerprint cannot. A fingerprint reader is a convenience feature, not proof that the lock has stronger physical or cybersecurity protection.

Use a unique account password, enable two-factor authentication, avoid shared administrator accounts, remove former users promptly, and keep an emergency credential or key in a secure location.

Installation and setup checklist

  1. Confirm compatibility using the manufacturer’s dimensions and template.
  2. Repair alignment first. The deadbolt should extend smoothly with the door open and closed.
  3. Install the mechanical hardware without forcing the motor or cylinder.
  4. Test manual operation with the door open before closing it.
  5. Calibrate the lock in the manufacturer’s app.
  6. Secure the account with a unique password and two-factor authentication.
  7. Create individual users instead of sharing a household or employee PIN.
  8. Set auto-lock conservatively and disable auto-unlock if its behavior is not predictable.
  9. Test network-outage operation and local keypad or Bluetooth access.
  10. Test the dead-battery procedure using the documented key, battery contacts, USB-C, or other method.
  11. Test user removal so you know how to revoke a lost phone, former employee, guest, or contractor.
  12. Recheck the strike and motor after repeated cycles and after seasonal door movement.

Common problems and fixes

The deadbolt does not fully extend

Check door sag, weather stripping, frame movement, and strike alignment. A motorized lock cannot reliably overcome a door that already binds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The motor stalls or batteries drain quickly

Operate the deadbolt manually. If it is stiff, correct the alignment and friction before blaming the battery or electronics.

Wi-Fi disconnects

Local keypad or Bluetooth access may continue while remote control and notifications fail. Confirm network coverage, battery condition, and whether the lock requires a bridge or cloud account.

Matter pairing fails

Check for a compatible hub, Thread border router, current firmware, supported platform, and correct commissioning process. Matter does not remove those prerequisites.

A feature works only in the manufacturer’s app

This is often expected. Matter may expose basic lock control while vendor-specific functions such as fingerprints, detailed logs, auto-unlock, or door sensors remain app-dependent.

The product is unavailable or region-limited

Verify stock, firmware, app support, and regional operation before ordering. Yale states that products purchased through its U.S./Canada site will not operate outside those regions. Availability and bundles can change quickly.

  • Need fingerprints? Consider eufy Touch & Wi-Fi, Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, Aqara U400, or Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro WiFi.
  • Want the least visible hardware? Consider Level Lock Pro or Level Bolt, accepting the reduced convenience of no integrated keypad.
  • Need the lowest complexity? Choose a mainstream keypad lock with local operation and a physical-key or clearly documented emergency-power fallback.
  • Need employee audit trails, schedules, several doors, or regulated egress? Move from residential smart locks to commercial access control.
