15 Bee-Friendly Native Flowers for a Southeast Garden

There is no single list of 15 flowers that is native across the United States. Native status depends on location, so use the Southeast examples below only if they fit your state or county. For a bee-friendly garden, choose a locally native mix with overlapping bloom times, then match each plant to your site’s sunlight and soil moisture.

How to choose flowers for bees

Prioritize three things: local native status, a range of flowering periods, and a good fit for the growing conditions in your garden. The Xerces Society recommends: “Use plants native to your region.” It also advises: “Build a mix of plants that will keep flowering from spring into fall.” Spring flowers can support emerging bumble bee queens, while late-season flowers provide resources for newly hatched queens preparing to overwinter. See the Xerces Society’s regional plant resources to begin localizing your choices.

Before buying, check a plant’s suitability for your state or county and compare its light and moisture needs with your site. Regional bloom windows are guides, not exact calendars for every garden or microclimate.

15 Southeast native flower examples

This selection is based on the Xerces Society’s 2023 Southeast guide. Its bloom ranges and growing conditions are guide entries, not guarantees for a particular garden. Check local suitability before planting; do not assume these species are native or appropriate throughout the Southeast, much less elsewhere.

What a Southeast bee study found

A USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service account of a Southeast study reports 1,024 bees from 26 genera and three families; 63% were Halictidae, commonly called sweat bees. In that study, each bee taxon visited an average of four wildflower species, and each plant species was visited by an average of six bee taxa. These results describe that study, not all bees or gardens.

Among the wildflowers compared, butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), Indian blanket flower (Gaillardia pulchella), and blue vervain (Verbena hastata) attracted the greatest abundance, richness, and diversity of native bees. The NRCS account says the three drew 89% of the bee taxa in the study and quotes Auburn University lead Anthony Abbate advising gardeners to check whether they are appropriate for their growing zone. Treat them as promising candidates for suitable locations, not universal winners.

Less-visited plants may still matter, including to uncommon or pollen-specialist bees. A varied planting is therefore a better goal than selecting only the species that attracted the most bees in one regional comparison. The NRCS account also describes a Southeast mix developed by researchers, NRCS, and Xerces with diverse wildflower and native grass seeds and overlapping bloom periods. If considering a regional pollinator seed mix, check every species against your location and site conditions.

How to localize the list and buy plants

  1. Identify your region. Use the Xerces Society’s pollinator resource center to find regional plant lists and resources such as state native plant societies. The USDA PLANTS database and Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center plant database can also help you investigate native ranges. Confirm choices with a regional source before planting.
  2. Match plants to the garden. Note the available sunlight, soil moisture, and space, then choose plants whose needs align with those conditions. Use several bloom windows to extend food availability across the growing season.
  3. Ask about nursery practices. When buying plants, ask whether they are free of pesticides that may harm pollinators. This advice appears in a USDA-hosted Great Lakes pollinator guide (PDF); it is practical purchasing guidance, not a claim that every nursery uses harmful pesticides.
