There are plenty of woodworking projects you can offer for sale, but no category comes with guaranteed buyers or a proven profit margin. Start with work that matches your skills, tools, available time, and likely customers; make a small test batch; then price it using your full costs before investing in inventory.
What woodworking projects sell? Start with these 14 categories
These ideas are possibilities, not a ranking of sales or net profit. Shopify’s June 2, 2026 guide describes the following product categories; which ones suit you depends on your local market, sales channel, and ability to produce them consistently.

- Wooden signs: Personalized names or sayings can distinguish a simple décor item. Shopify describes signs as beginner-friendly and relatively light to ship.
- Picture frames: Straight cuts and simple joinery make basic frames an accessible starting point. Reclaimed or scrap wood can provide material for distinctive designs.
- Wooden art: Wall art can range from straightforward assembled pieces to more involved carving or shaping.
- Furniture: Tables, benches, and other furniture can be statement pieces, but generally require more skill, time, materials, and space than small goods.
- Floating shelves: Practical shelves can be designed to ship flat, though dimensions, mounting hardware, and clear installation details matter to buyers.
- Wooden kitchen products: Coasters, trays, wine racks, utensils, and cutting boards are possible products. Even simple boards and coasters need careful finishing; spoons and spatulas require more shaping skill.
- Charcuterie boards: These combine a tabletop project with food-contact finishing considerations. Include food-safe finishing oil among the costs and use a finish appropriate for the intended use.
- Wood boxes: Simple crates are a different production challenge from detailed jewelry or keepsake boxes. Engraving or other personalization is an option to test, not a guaranteed way to raise profit.
- Birdhouses: Designs can serve garden buyers, but species-specific dimensions and features may matter. Shopify suggests consulting bird organizations when designing for particular birds.
- Planters: Planter boxes and small succulent holders offer different scales and shipping demands. If intended for outdoor use, consider how the design and finish will handle its setting.
- Repurposed and scrap-wood projects: Pallet-derived signs, planters, trays, shelves, coffee tables, and benches can reuse material. Pallet disassembly can be strenuous; remove nails safely and sand and cut reclaimed wood carefully.
- Wooden toys and games: Blocks, puzzles, and games are possible lines, but products intended for children raise safety and regulatory questions. Check the requirements that apply to your product and location; Shopify mentions the U.S. Children’s Product Certificate, but that is not a substitute for determining your own obligations.
- Candle holders: These can be seasonal décor or gift items. Shopify reports holiday-season interest in searches, not a guarantee of sales; design and market them with fire safety in mind.
- Docking stations: Desk organizers and device docks can appeal to buyers seeking a place for devices and accessories. Shopify cites a $109 retail price for one Oakywood docking station; that single brand example is not a typical price or evidence of profit.
Woodcraft also suggests thinking in product tiers: small impulse buys, mid-sized tabletop projects, and larger statement pieces. Its examples include pens, bowls, puzzles, ornaments, small tables, blanket chests, and Adirondack chairs. A tiered range can help you compare production demands, but it does not establish which items will sell.
How to choose what you should make
Choose a product by balancing build requirements with a specific group of likely buyers. There is no published scoring model behind the factors below; they are practical questions to answer before committing to stock.
#1 Best Overall

- 3. Strong nylon body and high-quality hardened steel bar have good impact resistance and can fully withstand the high frequency of use at the construction site.
- 4. Quick-change button design allows the F-Clamp to also function as a spreader. Just push the red button, remove the jaws, then reverse it and put it back in place to get the spreader you want.

Lightweight yet strong and durable,it can be used for a long time. Pad features a flexible material and a non-slip texture that enhances the overall clamping force. The quick release design makes your functions easier.
- Skill and tools: Can you make the item accurately with your current equipment? Signs, simple frames, shelves, boxes, planters, and birdhouses have accessible construction starting points; detailed shaping and furniture are more demanding.
- Repeatability and labor: How long does each unit take, including sanding, assembly, finishing, and quality checks? Can you batch parts without sacrificing consistency?
- Full costs: Account for lumber, hardware, finish, consumables, packaging, selling fees, shipping, and your time—not just the visible wood cost.
- Personalization: Names, sizes, or engraving may help a product stand out, but custom work can add communication, setup, and production time.
- Shipping and durability: A light sign or flat-pack shelf has different shipping economics from a bulky table or fragile, highly finished item. Consider parcel size, packing time, damage risk, and the destination you intend to serve.
- Seasonality: Ask whether the product is tied to holidays, gardening weather, or gift occasions, and whether you can manage demand outside peak periods.
- Buyer evidence: Look for interest in the specific geography and channel where you plan to sell rather than treating a broad product idea as proof of demand.
Validate demand before building inventory
Woodcraft advises visiting craft shows, farmers’ markets, and festivals before production, observing busy booths and prices, and shaping products for the local market. Shopify similarly recommends making a test project and using customer feedback to adjust the design and production choices. “There is no universal product that everyone wants,” Woodcraft notes.
- Pick one buyer and use case. For example, a gardener furnishing a small patio has different needs from someone buying a personalized housewarming gift.
- Study the intended channel. At in-person markets, compare what attracts attention and note actual asking prices. Online, review comparable listings, dimensions, options, photographs, and delivery terms; listings alone do not prove sales.
- Make a sample and a small test run. Track actual build and finishing time, material use, defects, packaging effort, and customer questions.
- Offer a limited quantity or take orders before scaling. Use feedback and completed sales—not likes or search interest alone—to decide whether to refine, repeat, or drop the design.
- Recalculate after delivery. Include real packing and shipping expenses, fees, returns, and rework when judging whether the product is worth making again.
Etsy’s Seller Handbook reports historical UK search increases for planters, outdoor tables, and patio furniture: 458%, 1,445%, and 2,644%, respectively, comparing January–March 2021 with January–March 2020. Those platform-specific figures describe a past comparison, not current 2026 demand or demand outside the UK. They cannot replace a test with your intended customers.

How to price woodworking projects without guessing at profit
Neither Shopify nor Woodcraft publishes a comparable net-profit dataset for these 14 categories, and neither supports a universal margin or income claim. A low material bill does not by itself make a product profitable: labor, finishing, packaging, fees, and shipping can change the result substantially.

Then compare your proposed price with alternatives buyers can actually choose in the same market. Test a small quantity at a defensible price, record the final costs and sales, and adjust based on what buyers do. Woodcraft advises accounting for time, materials, and market rates and cautions makers against undervaluing their work. Shopify likewise warns that a bestseller may be less profitable after shipping costs.

In-person markets let you talk with buyers and observe reactions and price points. Woodcraft also names Etsy, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace as online options. A standalone ecommerce store gives a maker more control over pricing and customer experience, Shopify says, but attracting visitors can be difficult. Marketplaces provide an existing shopping environment while bringing their own rules and trade-offs.

If you list on Etsy, follow Etsy’s policy rather than assuming every marketplace uses the same standard. Etsy says items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller. Under its “made by a seller” rules, physical goods must be made by hand or produced with computerized tools, and listings must use the seller’s own photographs; reselling mass-produced goods as handmade is not allowed. Read the current Etsy policy on what can be sold before listing.
For Etsy garden goods, its Seller Handbook recommends clear photos, descriptive multi-word titles and tags, complete dimensions and care details, and accurate processing times. Those basics also help buyers assess whether a handmade item fits their space and expectations.

Match a first product line to your capacity
For a first test, favor a product you can finish reliably and explain clearly to a buyer. A simple sign, frame, shelf, box, planter, or birdhouse may be a more manageable construction starting point than a piece of furniture or a heavily shaped item. That says nothing about guaranteed demand: observe the market, make samples, and let real costs and buyer response determine whether to expand.
