The IKEA BEKVÄM spice rack is more than a place for seasoning jars: its shallow shelf and front rail also suit books, small bottles, and other compact items. The ideas below range from using the rack as sold to multi-rack builds and a custom cabinet pull-out. Treat them as project ideas, not tested load-rated designs.
What to know about the BEKVÄM before you start
IKEA’s U.S. listing identifies BEKVÄM as item 204.871.75, made of solid aspen and measuring 15 3/4 inches wide, 3 7/8 inches deep, and 3 1/2 inches high. The shallow depth is useful in tight spaces, but it limits what fits securely. Check the size and stability of the items you plan to store.

1. Keep it as a spice ledge
Use the rack for frequently used spice jars near the cooking area. Check that your jars fit within the shallow shelf and sit steadily behind the rail. IKEA does not state a load rating for the rack, so avoid treating it as a heavy-storage shelf.

2. Display a favorite cookbook
IKEA says the rack can be used to display a favorite cookbook. It can keep a recipe within view without using much counter space; make sure the book rests securely and does not overhang precariously.
3. Make a children’s book ledge
Some IKEA U.S. customers report using BEKVÄM for children’s books. That is a customer-described use, not an official load rating or tested installation. Choose light books, mount the rack securely, and keep it out of reach if a child might pull or climb on it.
4. Organize a pantry shelf
IKEA Hackers documents using BEKVÄM racks as pantry organizers without modifying them. Try one to group small packets or jars, or use several to make compact zones. Measure your shelf first so the rack does not block items behind it.

5. Build a two-rack spice stair
A published project combines two racks into a stepped spice organizer. The raised arrangement can make jars easier to see, but plan how the racks will be joined and supported before assembly; the project source does not establish a load rating.
6. Arrange a three-tier wall organizer
A published project shows three racks configured as a tiered wall organizer. Before mounting, mark the rack positions and check that the items on each level will clear the shelf above. Use a mounting method suited to the wall and installation context.
7. Fit racks into a spice drawer
A published project uses multiple BEKVÄM racks inside a drawer. The number that fits depends on the drawer: measure its usable width, depth, and height, then account for handles or other obstructions before buying racks.

8. Create a cabinet pull-out spice organizer
A project discussion proposes combining racks with a back, a plank base, and drawer runners to make a cabinet pull-out. This is a custom woodworking concept, not a complete tested plan. Measure the cabinet opening, rack dimensions, runner clearance, and desired number of tiers before cutting material or buying slides.
9. Add a small bathroom toiletries shelf
The shallow ledge can be adapted for a few compact toiletries in a bathroom. This is a practical suggestion based on the rack’s form, not a documented tested project. Keep items stable, consider exposure to moisture, and use a finish appropriate to the location if you paint or seal the wood.
10. Line up nail polish or small bottles
Use the rail to keep small bottles together on a wall or inside a cabinet. Check that bottle bases fit and remain stable; do not assume the shelf is suitable for heavier containers just because they fit.

11. Keep frequently used craft supplies handy

Use the rack as a narrow display ledge for small, lightweight objects. Check each item’s footprint and balance, and anchor the rack securely so a bump does not send objects falling.
13. Make a beauty station with a hanging rail
A 2026 home-design article describes using two racks, one inverted, with hooks for styling tools. This arrangement changes the original orientation and adds hardware, so plan the mounting and hook placement carefully. Keep hot styling tools off the rack until they have cooled, and follow the appliance maker’s storage guidance.

14. Paint it as an accent shelf
IKEA U.S. customer reviews mention painting BEKVÄM. A coat of paint can help it coordinate with a room or cabinetry. Prepare and finish the wood according to the coating manufacturer’s directions, and choose a finish suitable for the intended location.

- Check the available space: Compare the rack’s dimensions with the wall area, drawer, or cabinet where you plan to use it.
- Decide how much to modify: The pantry ledge and book display use the rack with little or no alteration; tiered builds, the inverted beauty station, and the cabinet pull-out require more planning or hardware.
- Count the racks: One rack may suit a small ledge; drawer and tiered projects can require multiple racks. Measure before purchasing.
- Consider tools and installation: Wall mounting calls for appropriate fixings. A pull-out build also involves cabinet measurements, woodworking, and drawer runners.
- Match the rack to the items: Check item dimensions and stability. IKEA does not provide a load rating for these ideas, so do not use the rack for heavy or safety-critical storage.
Mounting and adhesive-hanger caution
IKEA’s guidance is to secure the rack with screws and plugs suitable for your home. Wall material and installation conditions matter, so there is no universal screw size to apply to every wall.
In a 2020 IKEA Hackers article, Jules Yap describes trying several adhesive-strip approaches, including a failed attempt after which a rack fell and broke a spice jar. The article says the BEKVÄM’s screw slots fit 3M Command sawtooth picture hangers and states that each adhesive strip with hook can hold up to 4 pounds (1.8 kg). That figure is the article’s description of the accessory, not an IKEA rack capacity or a guarantee for a complete installation. The account is not a substitute for IKEA’s secure-anchoring guidance. If considering adhesive hangers, check current manufacturer instructions, surface compatibility, application requirements, and load limits for your exact setup.
