Store a snow blower somewhere dry and protected, keep it level and accessible, and follow the exact owner’s manual for cleaning, maintenance, and fuel preparation. Fuel procedures differ by manufacturer: some recommend treated fuel, while Honda advises removing fuel for off-season or summer storage. Use the ideas below as a checklist, not as a universal service procedure.
Start with the owner’s manual
Before cleaning, draining fuel, adding stabilizer, changing oil, or replacing parts, find the operator’s manual for your exact make and model. Storage requirements vary by engine and machine configuration. Troy-Bilt and Cub Cadet both direct owners to their model’s manual for applicable procedures: Troy-Bilt’s off-season guidance and Cub Cadet’s maintenance guidance.

1. Choose a dry, protected spot
Keep the machine sheltered from weather and avoid a location where water can collect around it. A shed or garage may work if it provides appropriate protection and ventilation for the fuel procedure your manual allows; the manufacturers cited here do not rank specific building types.
2. Leave room to reach it
Park where you can inspect the machine and do seasonal maintenance without first shifting other heavy equipment. This is a useful layout choice, not a manufacturer-tested storage rule.

3. Keep the snow blower level
Choose a stable parking position rather than leaning or tilting the machine. Troy-Bilt cautions that tilting during storage can lead to fuel or oil leaks.
4. Use a cover made for a snow blower
A suitable snow blower cover can limit exposure to dirt and dust and help deter rodents. Troy-Bilt and Ariens recommend covers, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal size, fabric, or brand. Check fit for your machine; Ariens’ recommendation is in its snow blower maintenance tips.

5. Leave airflow beneath the cover
Do not wrap or seal the machine in a way that prevents air from moving beneath the cover. Troy-Bilt specifically recommends airflow under it.
6. Clear debris around the engine and muffler
Once the machine has cooled, remove accumulated debris around the engine and muffler as directed by the manual. Troy-Bilt includes this in its preparation guidance; do not clean near hot components.

7. Wipe off dried road salt
Clean salt from the machine before putting it away. Troy-Bilt and Cub Cadet mention salt removal as a way to help reduce rust risk.
8. Inspect areas prone to rust
Look for exposed or rust-prone metal while cleaning. Troy-Bilt recommends a light film of oil on susceptible areas, but use only the locations and lubricant specified in your manual.

9. Check what maintenance is due
Use the maintenance and service sections of the manual to decide what needs attention before storage. Do not assume that every service item is due every season.
10. Inspect the spark plug if the manual calls for it
Troy-Bilt’s guidance includes checking the plug and cleaning or replacing it if needed. Let the engine cool and follow the model-specific removal and installation instructions.

11. Check applicable wear parts
On machines equipped with them, inspect the shave plate and skid shoes. Cub Cadet and Troy-Bilt call out these parts for relevant configurations. Reverse or replace a part only if the manual permits it and inspection shows it is worn.
12. Change oil only when applicable and due
Troy-Bilt includes an oil change for a four-cycle engine in its preparation guidance. Not every snow blower has the same engine type or service interval, so confirm both in your manual before changing oil.
13. Follow your model’s fuel-storage procedure
Fuel instructions differ. Troy-Bilt describes adding fresh fuel and stabilizer, then running the engine for several minutes so treated fuel reaches the carburetor. Simplicity describes running the engine until it stops to remove fuel, with stabilized fuel as an alternative when the machine can be stored appropriately. Honda’s official fuel guidance advises removing fuel for off-season or summer storage. These are not interchangeable universal directions: use the procedure specified for your exact machine.
14. Handle gasoline away from ignition sources
Whichever fuel procedure your manual permits, treat fumes and fuel as a fire hazard. Simplicity warns against storing an engine with fuel indoors or in a poorly ventilated enclosure where fumes could reach an open flame, spark, or pilot light. Its guidance says to handle and drain fuel outdoors into approved containers, away from open flame. Follow the manual and local requirements for fuel handling and disposal.
Turn the checklist into a safe storage routine
- Identify the exact model and engine. Get its owner’s manual before choosing a fuel or maintenance procedure.
- Prepare the machine while it is cool. Clean debris and salt, inspect for wear or rust, and complete only maintenance that the manual calls for.
- Apply the model-specific fuel instructions. Do not combine a fuel-removal procedure with a treated-fuel procedure unless the manual explicitly directs it.
- Park it level in a protected, accessible location. Use a fitting cover while allowing airflow beneath it.
A cover, stabilizer, siphon pump, spark plug, shave plate, or skid shoe is not automatically necessary. Buy parts only after inspection confirms a need, and verify compatibility with the machine’s model. Stabilizer is appropriate only when the manual permits treated-fuel storage; a siphon pump is relevant only if the model-specific instructions call for fuel removal.
