Better workshop productivity starts with layout, preparation, and repeatable habits—not necessarily more complicated tools. WOOD Magazine’s December 30, 2020 article, credited to WOOD Magazine Staff and titled “13 workshop short cuts from Chuck Hedlund,” offers practical ways to reduce avoidable setup and keep work moving. The recommendations below are presented as the article’s advice, not as independently tested claims.
Set up the shop to support the work
1. Arrange machines around workflow
Position machines so lumber has room to move through them, with enough space for both infeed and outfeed. Mobile bases can help when equipment needs to move to accommodate long boards or a changing shop layout.

Give small items, such as router bits, dedicated storage. Label storage that is out of sight, and spend a short period tidying at the end of a work session so tools and materials are easier to find next time.
3. Collect dust at the source
Connect machines to a central dust collector with ducting, or move a collector between tools. Capturing dust where it is made can reduce cleanup, though the article gives no measured time-saving figure.

4. Tune machines and sharpen tools before cutting
Check machine setup before putting valuable project stock through it. Inspect chisels, blades, and bits, and sharpen tools that need attention. A short check before work begins can help avoid carrying a setup or tool problem into the project.
Prepare the project before making cuts
5. Consider keeping another router set up
The article suggests using separate routers for different jobs—for example, a fixed-base router in a table and a plunge router for freehand work—so you do not have to keep swapping setups. This is an optional convenience, not a requirement for every shop.

- Toe-in toward top jaws helps ensure firm grip on workpiece
- Square body seating for easy under-bench mounting
- Provision for installing wooden cheeks to protect work pieces
- 4-1/2" jaw capacity perfect for light duty woodworking tasks

6. Read the entire plan first
Read the plan all the way through, take notes, and identify the tools, materials, and useful measurements before beginning. Knowing the sequence in advance makes it easier to prepare for each stage.
7. Get project lumber before starting
Use the materials list to gather the project lumber together, which also gives you a chance to select boards with compatible grain and color. The article recommends buying at least 20% extra lumber as a practical rule of thumb, not as a research-backed statistic. Keep useful offcuts for test cuts, finish samples, or replacement parts.

8. Favor familiar techniques when time is tight
Experimenting is useful when there is room to learn, but a deadline is a poor time to rely on an unfamiliar method. Choose techniques you already know for time-sensitive work.
9. Have the specified hardware on hand
Check that the project’s hardware is available before cutting parts to fit it. A substitute may have different dimensions, which can require changes to the parts.

13. Cut suitable parts to size early
Double-check dimensions, then cut appropriate parts ahead of time. Make test pieces when useful and label parts clearly. For parts stored for a while, the article suggests chalk for identification and stretch wrap to keep them organized.
